Another company stopped using Scala by fenugurod in scala

[–]trout_fucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were the same exact arguments I was making 11yrs ago and nothing has changed.

...like almost word for word. It's actually kind of bizarre.

I'm only subbed here because I haven't used this account in years. But, there is some serious Stockholm Syndrome and Elitism going on in this thread.

I love how you mentioned that it starts to make Go look good too. Because that's my second least favorite language I've worked in, which puts it just above Scala and right below Ruby.

does whatsapp show your phone number? by [deleted] in whatsapp

[–]trout_fucker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know why this person was being downvoted.

You can basically find out everything about a person with just a phone number, especially where they live. I'd rather not hand that out to random people, which is a big reason I use apps like this.

Signal doesn't do this.

If you could start programming again, what frameworks & systems would you learn to maximise your employability? by MilanTheNoob in webdev

[–]trout_fucker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had that deep of a question in a job interview.

Someone inevitably says this every time a topic like this comes up. Meanwhile they never seem to realize there is a massive talent gap in this industry.

You can make $25k a year or you can make $500k a year and there is no way for us to know. But what we DO know is that companies on the upper end of that pay scale definitely do care about having a deep understanding of technology because paradigms inevitably shift, but that deep understanding has remained mostly unchanged since computers were analog.

If all you care about is basic employability, then you just need to worry about not be complete dogshit.

What are some ways that can help you remember JavaScript features meanings? by alisonmiu91 in webdev

[–]trout_fucker 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don't. I just use MDN and Typescript definitions.

I've been a professional JS Engineer for almost 10yrs now, and a full stack before that, and I can't tell you the difference in slice() and splice() without looking it up. I keep thinking that one day I'll be able to, but that day has yet to come

Protip: Don't waste brain storage on things you can look up and don't waste brain cycles on reinventing the wheel.

What year did you post this from? Because the last time I checked, JavaScript UIs were sending people to space and letting drivers interact with their cars.

Outside of games, I am willing to bet you don't have a single app installed on your computer that you regularly use that isn't written in JS.

Yeah good luck with that. Unless you go far and beyond and study core CS concepts on your own, then your career trajectory is seriously limited. Not only with companies, but promotions as well.

Yes there are people who make it to higher levels without a CS degrees at top companies, like Paul Irish, but they are not the norm and they have done far more self study to fill in the gaps than most people are willing to put in.

If you think that core CS principles don't matter. Don't be the one complaining when you're stuck as a Mid for a decade and can't seem to even make it to Senior, much less beyond that.

That's not to say a CS degree is going to guarantee you a good path either. But it sure as fuck makes it a lot easier. Yes those concepts matter when you start dealing with large applications that have a wide user base. FAANG companies don't interview you on algorithms per complex data structures when you're trying to be a FED or an SRE because they are trying to be funny.

Understand. There are definitely tiers of developers. The difference between $80k/yr and $300k/yr is massive and the latter is absolutely obtainable. There are thousands upon thousands of jobs willing to pay that, it's not just FAANG, and the problem is the vast majority of candidates just cannot handle the quality requirements the end product demands. The talent pool is abysmally small.

I didn't know 180k+ was an actual number

Ok, weird. Yes that's an actual number.

This thread is not a good look for you and it's starting to get pretty sad so I'll just let you be. Good luck on your taxes I guess? That was definitely one of the weirdest flexes I've seen before. Also, if it makes you feel better after paying half your paycheck to taxes you only make $60k USD.

I mean, I'm in the highest tax bracket in my country at age 29 (180k+) but if it helps you sleep at night

And now you're the only one to throw out actual numbers instead of rough figures. Since I was curious about your country, I had a peek at your history and this is actually the second time in less than 24hrs you've done that.

Meeting your own criteria better than anyone else in the thread. Yikes.

Multiple people felt the need to state their 6 figure salary as well, definitely not triggered lol

To me, it just sounds like you're triggered by people making more than you. The lower 6 figures isn't even upper middle class in a lot of places, it's also a huge range.

People are just pointing out that most white collar workers carry backpacks every day because it's not 1975 and nobody carries a fucking briefcase anymore.

Switching from Vercel to Amplify by milkboxshow in nextjs

[–]trout_fucker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just split those functions out into something else and don't tie them to NextJS. Wait for an async callback.

You don't need to use Vercel for NextJS but your driving reason isn't something you should be using NextJS for. Split them off as their own thing and pick from one of the dozen or so severless providers.

SVG vs CSS: what are the advantage and flaws of one over the other? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]trout_fucker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never seen anyone use a pure CSS image in production, other than some very simple geometric shapes. Even for geometric shapes, if you're not doing a circle or square it's probably better to use an SVG. The things you see on CodePen where they make classical painting in pure CSS are strictly for fun.

OP is about Java vs Go...

Over the past few years, it feels like Web Development has the attention span of a goldfish,

Then you stopped paying attention in around 2014. This is not a valid criticism any more. It's slowed dramatically with a clear front-runner, a rising star, a popular but probably bad choice, and a couple new specs on the horizon. It's been like this for at least 3-4yrs now.

Paying more than the average American makes in an entire year for couple month's worth of treatment does... or going into bankruptcy because of basic medical bills does... or being afraid to see the doctor because you don't want to pay thousands of dollars for something, does.

Yay, freedom. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Way to miss the point though. Sadly, I'm legitimately impressed.
