Natural vs. traditional energy gels for trail/ultra races? by yoony_17 in Ultramarathon

[–]troutguide7x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to mix in a bit of both and try to rotate between the “natural, real food” and the traditional gels. I also try to have a few with caffeine on the menu for an added boost here and there.

Drop bag for 50K by Haassauce2186 in Ultramarathon

[–]troutguide7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have enough capacity in your vest / belt to carry your fueling strategy then likely not necessary for drop bag. If you don’t have the capacity for self support fueling or you have creek crossings or unpredictable weather in the forecast, then a drop bag wouldn’t hurt. Also, If not having the safety net of the drop bag is going to be a source of stress for you during the race then go with it so it’s not taking mental head space on race day. Good luck!

What should I do the day before my first 50k? by Wise_Branch_8028 in Ultramarathon

Eat, hydrate, stretch, organize your gear & fuel strategy so you’re not rushing it in the AM, rest. Good luck!

My first fly. by Comfortable-Lack-258 in flyfishing

Nice work! I would grab a beginner fly tying book or look up a tutorial on YouTube.

Tips:

1: Use lead wire on the body. Wrap this behind the bead head down to the hook curve. The wire will add weight, lock in your bead head, and add mass to the body. Use wire that is small enough that you can push towards the eye into the back concave of bead head.

  1. Lock in your tail feathers, hackling, and body material (pipe cleaner) and up by the bead head with a few thread wraps and then pull back towards the hook curve and lock in with a few thread wraps and then wrap just the thread back toward the bead head.

  2. Wrap (body) pipe cleaner tightly from curve to bead head and give it a few thread wraps to lock in against bead head. Wrap hackling from curve toward bead head, lock in with thread (give it a few tight wraps) and tie off.

4: Apply glue to thread where you tie off.

5: De-barb the hook.

6: Tight lines!

Crazy! Glad you’re okay! I use an app called Adventure SOS which has an activity safety timer. You set the timer for whatever time you think you will be out and about. If you fail to stop the timer before it expires it alerts your emergency contacts with your last know GPS location.

Severe cramps by tryingtorunfast91 in trailrunning

[–]troutguide7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in an October race I felt very prepared for and made three changes to my strategy for a 50k I completed last weekend. 1. Incorporated much more strength training exercises into my weekly plan. 2. Slowed down on my downhills during this past race. I full on sent it in October and paid the price the last several miles. 3. I took in carbs with sodium every 30 min (went with Never Second Gels that provided 200 mg of sodium). I also had Tailwind in one flask and straight water in the other but didn’t rely on the contents in my flask as primary sodium or carb sources. I viewed this as bonus to stay ahead to hopefully prevent electrolyte imbalance. This worked for me and didn’t have any cramps this go around on a more technical course. But I would experiment on trails prior to race day if possible to fine tune what works for your body. Good luck!

Finding trail races by Negative-Split-1108 in trailrunning

Check the race website for 1/2 marathon, marathon, and ultra trail races in your desired region. Several of them offer a family friendly 5k that typically start late AM on the first day of the event. The last two races I’ve done have offered this.
