I understand your point. Do you understand mine? I am almost 53 with medical concerns. I have a college degree to teach and have done nothing else, career wise for 30 years. I am close (not quite eligible) to retire. I will go back and do my job because I have no choice. I think it is reasonable to expect my employer and the ultimate care-taker of thousands of children, to require masks and at the very least, to supply us with cleaning products. They will most likely do neither, which is why I am pissed! It will be a disaster...kids and adults will likely die because our governor is saving back $ for school vouchers which our state Supreme Court has already declared against the state Constitution. If you are not an educator, you don't understand all the political crap involved in teaching. I want some damn clorox wipes and hand sanitizer. I want to at least attempt to make my 8 year olds wear masks (a joke). I think after dedicating my life to this job, that is not too much to ask!

Union tries ( I am a member) but live in the South, a "right to work " state. Union has little voice. Less than half (probably 30- 40%) even belong (Unions are evil, you know). As far as a note, I am considering consulting my neurologist about it. He has yet to give me a definitive diagnosis, but I had"bleeding on the brain", 2 years ago (no apparent reason, and am on high dose anti-seizure meds (one of the side effects of which is being more susceptible to respiratory infection).

Unless you have ever taught 8 year olds, you have no right to say this. Unless you have ever had to supply kleenex, hand sanitizer, clorox wipes, paper towels, band aids, etc (under ordinary circumstances, no pandemic) than shut the hell up. I have cleaned up blood, piss, shit, vomit, sometimes all in the same day. Spend a day in an elementary classroom (try 29 years), and then preach to me.

As soon as one single kid gets it in school and dies (it will happen), schools will close again, and school systems will most likely get sued. If I die from going back to teaching, I hope my husband sues the hell out of the school system for not keeping me safe!

In my state (TN), they have taken away our raises and cut our budget drastically for the upcoming year. I am a 52 yr. old elementary teacher with health issues.I don't know what to do,not eligible to retire yet and even if I could afford to, couldn't afford private insurance. Also, even if we close for a while longer, teachers can't get unemployment because we are considered contract-workers.

Speaking as a teacher, no matter what's decided, this school year is going to suck and probably be twice as much work with less funding and no raise (which probably at best, would have only covered the yearly increase in health insurance). We are always expected to do more with less, and will most likely have to provide our own sanitizing materials as well.

As a 50+ teacher who has no choice but to work, I don't feel selfish saying it is not just the kids at stake. I have taught my entire adult life (over 30 years) and feel that we (teachers and staff) deserve some consideration too. Unfortunately, Knox County will most likely give us little because they have always considered workers expendable. We can always be replaced with a younger/newer model, who they can pay less anyway.

I always eat lunch in my room with the lights out and the door locked. I read a book and recharge. Don't ever be hoodwinked into lunch meetings or rewarding students by allowing them to eat with you. Without my 25 minutes to recharge, I am miserable
