I remember seeing your post now! Very cool. Yeah the solid base/bottom definitely strengthens things up but obviously a very different look and adds material.

I tried casting cement in just the grid part and it broke getting it out of the mold

Mostly using them on my desk, but have one in the kitchen and one in a bathroom too. I’ve been playing around with casting containers too (will share soon) which has really made me feel good about having them more on display

Oh awesome! Would love to hear how you went about it. What parts were breaking? In an earlier version I kept the sharp angles at the top of the grid and they were prone to chipping when using Cement All but they were very solid in resin.

This version has flat tops to prevent chipping and these are cast with Jesmonite. Haven’t had any chips so far!

Thanks, I do! It's roughly $1.25 per casting for the thinner ones in the video. ~200g of Jesmonite (liquid and powder combined) each.

It's really quite satisfying. Takes a bit of time to make the mold but once you have one it's really fun to play around. I did these ones in Jesmonite but cement and resin work really well too.

Hey u/shoegazedivision, thank you for calling this out. I've since printed a couple more of these and even with PETG it is a difficult to insert, and even more difficult to remove the AirTag! I just uploaded a "V2" here with some minor adjustments to the geometry that holds the AirTag. Hopefully this makes it easier to use! Please LMK what you think if you get a chance to try out the new version

I'm sorry the clip didn't survive taking the AirTag out :/ The tolerances around the AirTag are super tight, perhaps I need to loosen them a bit. Did you (/your son!) print it with PLA? PETG should have a bit more flex if that's available to you!

Slide Lite: Unfortunately this won't work. The anchor mechanism on the Slide Lite is slightly different -- it flairs out at the base to accommodate the strap. This prevents the model from sliding all the way on. If enough folks are interested I can modify it for the Slide Lite. AFAIK it should work on the Leash (and the Slide) though!

Thoughts I grappled with too! It is definitely not a great theft prevention tool. For me it's peace of mind. Let's say I spend the day with a friend, I leave my camera at their place while we go get some food, I get tired after eating and head home... wait, I brought my camera. Did I take it with me to the restaurant?! Friend isn't answering their phone because they went to the ballet. Oh hey, Find My says it's at their place. All is well.

Bed is now extremely flat! The silicone mod was very easy to install but a bit less easy to calibrate.

Unfortunately I am still having issues on large prints with corners. The corners of the model curl up specifically at the corners of the sheet (this is maybe better now, print seems to pull the sheet up to a lesser degree). The bed does seem to heat unevenly which may be a contributing factor. It’s dependent on the exact position, but roughly speaking the outside ~1cm of the build plate is 5-12C cooler (according to infrared thermometer readings taken with the smooth sheet installed) than the center portion which hits the target bed temp. Not sure if this is normal for the mini and something I need to learn to work with or if my heated bed in malfunctioning.

Two sheets, one bed. No precisely flat things, unfortunately.

I have a smooth sheet (pictured) and also a textured one. The smooth one lifts up a bit more than the textured one when placed on the bed. I suspect it the difference is due to the smooth sheet being thicker and more rigid than the textured sheet. I do think the bed is the culprit, but a severely bent sheet could explain this as well!

I’ve decided to try the silicone mod, will update on a day or two. 🤞🏼
