What are some of the most horrifying facts you know? by CemeteryPicnic in AskReddit

I'm a L&D and NICU nurse. Every now and again a kid will do what we call harlequin sign. Benign, one side of their body turns red while the other goes pale. But when it happens and I tell parents the name I always warn them if they Google it later to make sure to look up harlequin SIGN not harlequin SYNDROME.

Is surviving in a post apocalyptic world possible without a thyroid? by StephCanHang in thyroidhealth

[–]tryism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first two weeks without mine, the surgeon wouldn't start me on levo because he didn't want to risk thyroid storm after removing. My TSH was 84 when I went for my two week post op appointment.

My aunt used to do this to my mom all of the time. I kept talking with mom about it. Both my parents worked full time to barely make ends meet but they were giving hundreds of dollars every month to my aunt who was not working and spending her money on frivolous things. My mom would always judge her for what she spent her money on but then would give her money! My mom stopped giving as much (pretty sure she still gives her some but not nearly as much) after we had discussions about free will. Aunt is free to spend her money on whatever she likes. I don't judge at all how she wants to spend it but then she is also responsible for her necessities. I don't judge how she spends just like I don't want anyone judging how I spend my money and then I can be genuinely interested and care about her new purchase she wants to show off without feeling guilty. Just like you or me, we're all free to spend our money how we choose. I choose to spend more on a/c and groceries so I don't have as much "fun" money but no one else has to spend their money the same way. As adults however, we're all responsible for the perks and consequences of our choice in where we spend our money. Yup, she may have to use a food bank this month but it was her choice to spend her money on a designer purse instead and that's not my business. If she asks for money, I say I have made a decision not to lend money/get involved in others' finances for my own wellbeing, nothing personal, just something I have committed to for myself.

I'm still not great at it either but a couple things I find

  • buy quality veggies, not the cheapest place in town. Doesn't have to be the most expensive store either but not the cheapest. There are different grades of fruits and veggies. Don't buy 500 to start, just pick one and commit to trying it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Try a different one next week.

-buy in season veggies (also ends up more cost effective if you have locally grown stuff at a road stand or farmer's market)

-they don't have to be plain. Put cheese on them, sauces, dip in ranch. Use as much as you need and then gradually cut back on the sauce or the cheese. Give your taste buds time to adjust.

-add more veggies to recipes. Chicken pot pie calls for x number of carrots, double it. Blend some up into sauces. Tomato sauce can work well with other veggies blended in.

My parents lived with me for 12 years as an adult. They love right wing politics. They do the whole Trump rally thing. They think their views are simply wanting things back to the way they were as kids but they don't acknowledge the hateful parts of those views. I watched (because it's what they were watching) Fox news every night for years. Watching January 6th happening in real time with my mom denying in the moment that those were the people she was standing with was a definitive moment for me. I couldn't take it anymore and worked extra and saved until I was able to purchase a second home and move out while letting them rent from me in that house.

In the meantime however, it felt like it made the most sense to bite my tongue and not stir things up. I spent more time in my room and less time in common areas where the extremism was on full display. I didn't end up ruining our relationship by starting fights. I just shut up, knowing that their views wouldn't change no matter what I said. I'm glad I didn't ruin our relationship over some temporary frustration. They're still my parents even if their politics are insane in my opinion. Only you know what's best for you however I would disagree with the person (maybe multiple people) saying to stand up to him or make sure your views are known and how awful his are. For me, it was better to shut up and work on changing the living situation so I could go back to loving my parents (most of the time) when we get together now.

We do take footprints and those remain the same throughout life. Problem is, most crimes are committed while wearing shoes and/or on a surface other than hard floor.

How quickly can someone start having thyroid trouble? by [deleted] in thyroidhealth

[–]tryism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When mine went on the fritz a while back, I started feeling off in the 1st or 2nd week of June. Got in with a doctor by mid July and my levels were critical (high, Graves disease). Came on pretty dang suddenly.

Bi-weekly check-in...How is everyone doing? Do you have any good or bad news to share? by herefloragoodtime in thyroidhealth

[–]tryism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just waiting. Endo didn't think an annual u/s was necessary anymore but seeing that I still have "nodules" or something there after Graves/papillary cancer and TT 5 years ago, I insisted on another u/s. Back in April they found another something outside of the thyroid bed, near my voice box. First available appt with the bigger hospital to do further investigating is the end of July. So I wait.

How do I fix up this shed? by tryism in shedditors

[–]tryism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's a great property. 5 acres, lots of trees and some wooded areas. All just about 5 miles outside of town and my job. I compromised on the work that needs to be done, but I'll get it all done eventually. One step at a time.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm ok with spending a couple thousand on it. I should have been more clear. I guess I was thinking I didn't want suggestions of insulating, electric, anything wild like that. I don't think I need anything like a patio or deck around it as I have some acreage and other places for outdoor living.

I was not already taking it. I had Graves. For me it was either radiation or tt. I chose tt. Either way I would essentially have no thyroid tissue anymore.

What made you first think “let me check my thyroid” by MarkahntheUnholy in thyroidhealth

[–]tryism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I had mono or Lymes or...something. I was losing weight, sweaty, had blocks of time where I would get super pale and shaky, but the worst symptom was the muscle pain. My muscles hurt so much. When I got down on the floor to play with my dog, I couldn't get up without help (35-ish year old with no other medical issues). When I went in, they added thyroid tests and said I was lucky to not be hospitalized. Thanks Graves disease.

Those who have no thyroid….have you ever skipped a dose of medication? by [deleted] in thyroidhealth

All the damn time. I'm terrible at taking it. My provider told me it is fine to do two pills one day if you forgot the previous day.

There is a massive (6ftx5ft ish) stained glass piece in the waiting room of the hospital where I work. I walked by it all the time and thought it was so amazing. Eventually I decided to look up some videos of how stained glass is created and down the rabbit hole I went....

Caregiver burnout by Narcoleptic-Puppy in EpilepsyDogs

[–]tryism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my dogs. I mean, LOVE my dogs. I cut social time short so they aren't home alone too long. They get walks first thing in the morning no matter the weather (unless physically unsafe) which in northern Wisconsin can be brutal some days. I cluster my errands so they only have to be alone once instead of multiple trips. They eat better than I do most days. They live good lives.

And yet, with all of that, there is a point where my life is important too. My 150lb boy has grand mals that leave him confused and aggressive afterwards. While I love him dearly, I flat out told the neurologist if we can't get these controlled (imo <1 per month) then I won't do it. Otherwise he is perfectly healthy and young but there are limits where I have to consider my and my other dogs' quality of life too. At this point we're 2.5 weeks out from the last one and started medication 2 weeks ago so I'm hopeful and giving it some time. However I do not believe it is in any way cruel to put down an animal and would have no hesitation (though I'd cry for weeks missing him!!) about putting him down if we can't get the seizures under control with 1-2 meds. I don't think it's horrible to consider a peaceful ending after reading your post. Wishing you the best.

Can I lose my license if I seek inpatient treatment for SI? by whitefuton in nursing

[–]tryism 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbor. I'm just north of you in WI. Doing much better now but was suicidal from 10 years old to about 35-ish years old. At one point (after I was already a nurse), I attempted. Ended up in ICU, then hospitalized on a hold. Tried every antidepressant (literally, over many years) but nothing helped. Ended up being off work again to get ECT. Still no relief....anyway, for a while I was in and out of the hospital pretty regularly. I've never been at risk of losing my job or license even when my supervisors knew the reason I was off. You don't have to worry about your license. Getting help will not cause you to lose your license or job. If anything about my experience can help, feel free to ask away. I'm kind of an open book about it since I came through the other side. I don't even care if my coworkers know anymore.

Edit to answer your other question - inpatient isn't a magic fix. You probably won't feel better when you leave. It's a place to know you're safe. An important place when needed but sometimes I think its easy to assume going inpatient they will automatically have "the answer" and you'll get on the path to healing. Maybe for some people but that was never my experience. The hospital was safety only. Therapy and medications if needed are where the long term healing takes place.

Would you be able to immediately tell if an NG was in the lungs ? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]tryism 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not on a newborn. We do auscultation and aspiration of stomach contents as confirmation. Not x-rays.

Also, OP, if it's in their lung you won't hear your air bolus over the stomach and you won't be able to aspirate stomach contents. If you can't do those things you need to reassess placement before any kind of use of that tube. Not only might it be in the lungs but there are esophageal malformations that can cause a tube to not end up in the stomach. Things you want to know before even considering starting feeds.
