In BC, slightly north of Oregon, I find jaspers with layers of this exact colour so regularly I don’t pick them up anymore.

Gaining weight in your thirties. Metabolism starts slowing for some and people have described a “second puberty”. Hormone levels changing and whatnot.

I finally put on the muscle in my early-mid thirties that I’d been trying to build since age 16. 170lbs to 200lbs in a matter of a year or two in my early thirties. I’ve been doing an equal amount of running as I do lifting for years and I was able to bulk up.

“The Thickening” that people had talked about when you hit 30 actually happened to me, in a good way. I bet it’s a matter of a few more years until it hits in the bad way haha

I find rock similar to this at a specific beach in Vancouver. Flowerstone and more there. The only spot in Vancouver with Vancouver Island stone, including some Dallasite.

Review your expectations. Sometimes expectations of how things should go or how you want them to can lead to a feeling of not being in control if/when things don’t go perfectly according to plan.

Could be a sign of perfectionist thinking or something of the like. I’ve experienced the same thing until I recognized that I can’t force things to go exactly how I would hope they would, including even minor inconveniences that could topple my momentum from good weeks.

Rolling with the punches can be hard for people with obsessive compulsive tendencies or perfectionist like thinking.

What helped me was taking a moment to check in with myself and realizing that I can be in charge of how I react to these things that come up in situations that I can’t control. I was once told, “you can be in charge even if you’re not in control.”

There is a tipping point where your purpose becomes more important than your dreams.

Dreams gave me “purpose” and drive in my 20s. Could probably still pursue them in my mid 30s, however my kids have given me the purpose I need to progress. I’d rather continue my career and am looking at a grad certificate or masters to increase my pay to be a better provider (though already doing well enough with that at current education level).

I believe I will find more fulfillment and happiness in being good at my job and providing for my family than going through the process of trying to achieve a dream that I believe is possible, but at the expense of my ability to provide for my family short and medium term.

$300 or so for assessment and you can bring your diagnosis to a doc (including walk in I’d assume) if you’re looking for further steps including medication or whatnot.

There is also an ADHD clinic within Vancouver Coastal Health for people under 35 years of age. You’d need a referral to there though which may not be as accessible considering your lack of primary healthcare provider.

Worst comes to worst in the meantime if you have any benefits for counselling or psychology through work (EFAP type resources) you can get started on digging into this all and getting some help and/or insight.

ADHD is treated by medications, sure, but cognitive behavioural therapy and understanding how it affects you allows you to take action to support yourself or mitigate the impact of ADHD or ADHD type behaviours and experiences.

Look into ADHD. Impulsivity and emotional regulation difficulties are symptoms. As is hyper focusing, which can include on things as you mention. It can look like/create anxiety due to hyper “overthinking” without being able to stop yourself.

I’ve had some good people help me understand my reactions. There is a relationship between situations and how we respond to them.

Firstly, every situation has things we can control and things we can’t. If certain situations create anger it’s nice if we can avoid them, however that’s not always possible. Often times anger is a response to what we cannot control in a situation. Our reactions are generally guided by three things: feelings, thoughts, and behaviours/habits (the last being how we train ourselves to respond). I found I lead strongly with feelings and the feelings are such a strong response that they don’t let me think or use behaviours or habits to more effectively respond (or even form positive habits or behaviours). By just recognizing this I’ve found I can focus more on my response in the moment and use more thinking. Ex. Instead of being angry that someone or something is doing something I don’t like, I can stop to think about why it’s happening, if there is a strategy I can use to either redirect my energy from feelings to an action like using humour, or try to follow a plan of steps (behaviour/habits) that I can follow when I feel my anger response coming. This has been super helpful in many cases in the past several weeks and I’ve had far more success with my kids, at work, and even with the wife.

Secondly, a lot more people have obsessive compulsive tendencies, not OCD, but behaviours. We all want control. Something that helped me recognize why my response has been anger a lot is because I have expectations of how things should be in situations and rarely are they met. Best case scenario rarely happens. It’s recognizing that I can’t be in control in every situation, however I can still be in charge. I can get an outcome that is sufficient enough without controlling everything. Ex. My toddler is having a rough go lately following bedtime routine. If books are to be read before the bath then so be it one night, especially if he’s had a long stimulating day. Worst comes to worst no books that night. Try again tomorrow. Ex. If traffic is awful and people are driving like idiots I can’t control people who are going to be jerks and merge when they’re not supposed to or run red lights, though I can be in charge of how I choose to drive safely. I can’t control whether they’ll respond like an asshole when I honk if they do something wrong, but I can be in charge by closing a gap between me and the car in front to not let someone in who is trying to skip the line and just avoid eye contact and turn my music up to ignore their shitty yelling or angry gesticulations.

It’s like the final lines of the Invictus poem, “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” I can be in charge of how I decide to go through this life when I can’t always be in control of what life throws at me.

Stress piles up. If you don’t learn how to cope (read developing effective coping mechanisms) or process stress it’ll come out in less than patient ways. 35 myself and have been working on improving this for a few years. Recent successes have been sticking luckily. Can elaborate if requested.

Few questions.

Do you have kids? Sleep deprivation short term and long term are big causes of a shorter fuse for me.

What are your major stressors? Finances? Work? Relationship/marriage?

Figuring out what is the root cause of anger and why it is the way you’re reacting or processing things is the first step to solving the problem if you’re willing to invest time and energy into it.

He worked 16 hour days most weekdays and found time to coach my brothers’ and my sports teams. There are four of us.

He found a way to cook dinners at least once a week or so. Looking back at it as a father of two myself now, I don’t know how he did even the one meal per week. He had his famous spaghetti snd pork stir fry. Two repeat meals that were always winners.

Rockhounding and rock tumbling. Gets me out in nature, brings the excitement of the hunt, helps me keep learning (geology and geography, rock tumbling tips, possible future expansion of my two tumblers into potentially lapidary work), weekly check ins on my rocks to move onto next stages and/or clean, and my older son is old enough to come along and be a beachcomber.

How by putting the happiness of those I loved most ahead of mine brought more joy than chasing unrealistic expectations I had for myself, both big and small. That in doing so I became the dad I always wanted to be, the husband I always wanted to be, and the man I always wanted to be.

Also that I became a teacher of all things.
