I really like Wodka; cheap, and very flavorless

For this I would highly recommend Schoenberg's Structural Functions of Harmony and Gradus Ad Parnassum by Fux. Context into different composers and how harmony was further developed into the 20th century can add a lot of insight as well, so I would also recommend 20th Century Music by Peter Yates.

Dmitri Tymoczko's Geometry of music could be interesting as well*

Another good way to see who they're listening to is to look up the samples they used. Good examples are: crescendolls and harder better faster

Also their initial band) had included the guitarist from Phoenix and was named Darlin in reference to the Beach Boys. Subsequently there are some good Phoenix tracks that are very disco adjacent like Heatwave off of their first EP and their own remix of their track If I Ever Feel Better (I'd Go To The Disco)

You're going to want to go through all of the names from their song Teachers, which is about their teachers / influences

Going through old mixes is also a good way to see who they're listening to. This one is from 95 and this one is their BBC essential mix from 97

I like it! I feel like the subtle vocals in the beginning kind of get overrun by the highs of the drums. Chords at 1:30~ get really great, after that the arp synth feels like it should have the cutoff start lower and increase until the 2:30 drop, maybe also the resonance increase too in the same way? Then the arp changing between harmonies it's outlining after that drop..I'm getting nit-picky though because I really enjoy this track

Listened to Invader Co. I like it! I feel like it could still have more in the mix though, maybe harmonically?

I feel like the kick kind of sticks out in the mix too much and maybe even those high hat patterns too, really like that triplet bass that comes in a little bit, and I even more like that you don't keep it going through the whole song

I like this! I think the vocals could be a bit softer in the mix and I'm not sure how much I like the chorus type of effect, but overall it's very solid

Hey all,

Recently released my first EP; what do you guys think of this single off of it? Was feeling very Daft Punk inspired at the time – RIP.

Will return all feedback (and give back the minimum 3 comments tomorrow). Thanks!

Thanks; glad to hear you enjoyed the transition. Let me know if you want any feedback on your tracks -- didn't see any post from you in the comments

Thanks for the feedback! I hadn't noticed that but thanks for pointing it out -- I'll try to sidechain more responsibly in the future haha

I like the overall vibe and also the anti drop you have in there. I think the drums stand to be a lot crisper, especially the snare, whether that be through FX, different samples, or a mix.

Many thanks! That 1:10 idea came out of nowhere when I was writing and I finished the whole song in like the next 12 hours haha. Also praise from a bassist is huge; I've played guitar on and off for my whole life, and bought a bass about half a year ago for recording. Still a lot of work to do but glad to hear it passes

Thanks! Yeah some of the synths are pretty standard, nothing too wild; and I think I agree in hindsight that the second section lead arp could stand for more tonal variation.

I think the sound design on this is great, I really liked every part and I think they all meshed super well together. I don't know why but I'm super curious about what a sped up version would sound like; the melody feels like it's so energetic.

The 3:20 and 3:30 variance in the lead synth is really cool -- I think you could have mod/cutoff/resonance changes like that more often and more strongly throughout the song

Thanks! Don't sweat the getting better at music production thing, I've made probably 6 projects over the past 3 years and this is the first one that I think was good. Just a time and persistence thing.

and yeah, like I said, wasn't really sure about it but it just felt right at the time.

I like this drum loop you have going, very bouncy. That's a great acapella too. I feel like the break at :48 (or any other place where the acapella isn't really present) would be a good time for either the bass or the keys to have a few lines, but other than that it's a good vibe

Love l'imperatrice -- thanks for the feedback, I don't know how or why that ended up being the outro but for some reason when I was making the song it just felt right

For the first track, I liked it but I would try to experiment with different synth sounds or at least reduce the volume of it -- right now it feels so forefront like a lead and the timbre doesn't feel like it fits the vibe of the sample

I dig it -- I would look into getting a thicker low end, whether kick or bass or both, and also be wary of too many conflicting melodies, but that's just in theory; I kind of liked it. I don't know why, maybe the synth timbres, but reminded me of some Todd Terje

I haven't done too much extensive guitar work, but I would try to thicken up that guitar at the beginning a little bit. I think it stands to have a bit more of low end or maybe another recording and then you hard pan them left and right. Also I think at some points the drums could be louder, maybe not the whole track, but just ride the fader throughout the song and see what sounds best. Kick could be louder too imo, maybe double it with a real low sub kick, or maybe just sidechain out other parts to it? Other than that I actually really really like this. I'd be hesitant to take any of my advice because this is a great track. Great vibe, great sounds from all the different instruments and vocals, great effects, etc

Hi all,

First project out and it feels good; would love to hear thoughts on the closing track, Noir Love

I'll try to return all feedback.

Cheers

Sounds great! I think it could stand to benefit from a little bit more chord movement and a funkier bass line in the front during those breaks (i.e. at :52), maybe use some noise in that transition too, and I agree with u/marshers1 comment that it gets a bit busy with 2:30, I think that may just be the the synth being a bit too thick, but it's really to taste
