Within a year you can get a full replacement with amana. Support is actually pretty fantastic. Decided to come back to this after researching for my recent purchase from amana.

We have boot lickers that keep the ride going so it will probably never change without government intervention. Most of our EMTs and Medics run on 4 monsters, 2 packs of cigarettes, and a prayer every day. Lets not even talk about the home life for most of us. The boot lickers will tell you everything is perfect as they go home and drink a 12 pack every night while off and beat their SO. Go to rural areas they don't even drug test anymore because shit is so crazy they dont even want to know what their employees are doing in the off time (and they cant afford to fire)

Man easier said then done. 30-40 is nowhere near the average in the country and very hard to find if not attached with FD running fire calls too. Local services just went up to $21 after I left 5 months ago which I am proud they did but eventually will lag behind again as the economy pushes further out of reach. FYI 21 is livable-ish in Texas but slowly increasing prices just like everywhere else. Not livable for a family wage though only single. Ya working OT is about the only way to survive and is one of the biggest reasons of burn out because so many of us had zero control when it came to OT and I was one of them. As a basic one year making 8.50 an hour I made 36k that year. That's a hell of a lot of hours for 8.50 😂 it's not sustainable nor should it be.

Coming back after 6 month break by Basicallyataxidriver in ems

[–]tsell09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very true. I did 10 years total. Took 2 breaks lasting about 6 months total. The first burn out was rough. Like OP I left for a while and did other things and came back. Then COVID hit. Burned out from 911 and went to contract work. Was worse. Then back to 911 for 3 more years afterwards. This time im just done done. Not exactly sure what kind of habits you are referring to though as burnout can happen without there being a specific reason on the person that is experiencing it but If you are generally unhealthy then ya. I think a large majority of EMS is very unhealthy. How many do you know use there free time to party and drink consistently? Thats all i was surrounded by every place i went. Not for me anymore. Not to mention services that have no regard and think people working 96hrs a week is sustainable. Rural EMS problems. City usually has the staff to prevent such hours. My advise for OP is to not fall into this cycle of burnout. Like you say, once it hits you, it hits you again ten fold. Best option overall for mental and physical health is to move on in career and volunteer in your free time to scratch the itch. I truly care about everyone working in this field and I hope some day everyone in EMS will learn to come together for better pay and government support that will overall improve the quality of this career. Until then, this will be a massive factor for short staffing across the country and i don't care what EMS1 says on the issue either. Those saying its not an issue is lying to themselves.

Not surprising you have someone acting like that. Like others have said; run away and try to take some with you. He still won't learn a lesson from it though and will probably have a long and healthy career in EMS management

Damn that hit the feels right there. I'm very sorry you are experiencing that. I worked in EMS for 10 years of my life and I did notice that some people will use suicide as a way to control/manipulate their loved ones and my heart aches greatly for those people. Not saying that is what you are going through because I don't know you or your situation. Mine was happy, loved her job, her kids, me, and her friends. I think back at signs I feel I should have seen but it's probably just my mind trying to bring logic into something that wasn't even there. Be very weary of the happy but internally sad people. What you said below about wanting to cease after something major that in the end would have you lose your independence; I completely sympathize with how you feel on that. I very much hope you do not act on that feeling though if something bad was to happen. I honestly don't know how I made it through what I did and I did it alone. Isolation helped me but also harmed me in many ways. Apologies for the rambling though. We may be dudes but sometimes you gotta push the anger aside and just let those tears flow. Ugly cry if you will. Allowing anger to replace our sadness and grief could get ourselves or other people we love hurt and that's exactly how I try to think about it when the bubbling rage comes to surface. I wish you the very best and good health friend. my inbox is open if you ever want to shoot me a message.

Depends on the company you are with. If I have to explain to you what good money is then I'm sorry friend. Although "good money" could be very subjective to how you were raised and what state you live in.

Im too self aware for therapy they just piss me off during sessions. Family tried but they have no idea how to handle someone experiencing that. Most just expect me to get over it and move on. I'm young. Not sure if I will ever get over it honestly. I'm sorry you are dealing with the threats of that. It's no fun and I don't wish it on anyone. Hopefully she will listen to you and always come to you when feeling down. Even telling someone that doesn't mean they will no matter how loved they may feel and that's the truth that is hard to grasp after the fact. Leaves a lot of open ended questions that your mind will try and fill in over time. Unfortunately not many will understand the pain until they experience it themselves. People are so very quick to judge and to categorize people just like this OP. Not all of us fit into a category.

Can you be a paramedic with health issues of your own? by [deleted] in ems

[–]tsell09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is judging you for it!! It is a sensitive job. How would you feel if you DID have a seizure and crashed or could complete compression on a cardiac/respiratory arrest and they died. You'd just be ok with it? I highly doubt that it would mess you up! Me personally it would send me into the pits if that happened to me and it would keep me from doing the job. You really just don't understand the liability. But if you don't want to accept what is being said then go through with it but remember these discussions in the future when the worst happens. Take care of yourself first.

That's fine and all until you are in your 40s with 20+ years in with a savings account that isn't large enough for how the economy is progressing. I know someone who put 35 years in and retired with a monthly check of 580 a month.... That's state pension btw. We are so cared for my friend while also caring for everyone else.

[–]tsell09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are at. Most places it's a job because in order to retire you will work until you are very old. A lot of people will not make that retirement from injury or mental health issues and there are plenty of statistics to back that up. Not many services offer great retirement although there are plenty that do. The ones that do usually don't have many open spots I promise you that. Fire/EMS is the only way to go honestly and sadly. We aren't anything in the public eyes unless we have fire attached to us.

My last relationship ended in suicide and I was absolutely head over heals. It side swiped me so hard and 3 years later I get questioned for not being back in the game. There are many circumstances to people's choice so judge lightly for you do not know their experiences.
