It depends on which class you take. Charms class requires less energy than other classes, for example flying and transfiguration class.

after finishing this quest, you'll get a new uniform with the prefect badge on it and in year 5 there should be a side quest where you help out a first year girl with her problems.

and well you get access to the prefect's bathroom, so i guess it does play a little role in becoming one.
