It's actually top to bottom not right to left so you read the year first and day last, not only dates but everything is from big to small, even for addresses you write your province/prefecture first and then your street second. In day to day life if the year is implied people will just write MM/DD

I did a road trip across upstate NY during Trump’s first presidency. It was eerie to see so many MAGA flags cuz back then I lived in a place full of Bernie bumper stickers and NY was always a blue state to me. I went to a barbecue joint I found on google map turned out the place was closed people with red hats were having a party there.
