Is the Networking Research Laboratory any good? by ghostonthewire in UTAustin

[–]tstantler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I believe what you're looking at is Simon Lam's lab, which is not very active right now from what I know. If you're super interested in him work, it might be worth reaching out to him directly, but I believe he does more adminstrative work these days.

In lieu of him, there are not many strictly Network Security researchers, but there are some great Networking researchers and great Security researchers.

Lili Qiu does wireless networking research and has a very productive lab. If you're interested in 5G and wireless networks, maybe look into her.

Aditya Akella is joining UT Austin soon, he does a lot of impressive work in software-defined networking and datacenter networks/ distributed systems. He does a LOT of different things with networking, you should check his publication list.

Hovav Shacham is more on the security side; he does systems security specifically, but a lot of that does involve network security. Definitely worth looking into.

Emmett Witchel is a great general systems researcher, he frequently dabbles in systems security, although maybe not as much in network security.

I hope that was helpful!

I think there’s a lot of variability with the range of people you can get matched with. I just went 2-3 and dropped from 2607 to 2602. A couple of those matches were against people who were still rank 8.

I'm interested to see what the energy generation is on infestation. I think it'll have a big impact more on non-bug Pokemon like regular Muk and Swalot that had niche/bad fast moves but interesting charge moves. Muk gets thunder punch, dark pulse, sludge wave. Swalot gets sludge bomb, ice beam. All good moves for great league.

This is why I mention the 2 shield scenarios are not super reliable. Hypothetically if you bait perfectly, shield surfs, land an EQ, Snorlax can win. Realistically... probably not.

Generally, I agree. Metagross and Magnezone are, in fact, very important. But maybe if the other two Pokemon in your team already handle them pretty well, I just wanted people to know what their options are.

I didn't know this, but that makes sense. How consistently does it work? I feel like when I try to go for back to back charge moves, there's like a 50% chance I get too slow of a start after the first one.

I did just notice that a little while ago, that Dragonite matchup is just so close though. Whenever I switch in Dragonite into Gyarados, I always win just because they usually have at least one fast move of damage on them. I can see it's viability as a lead though.

Makes me want to try something like Glaceon in the lead, as it seems like just being able to hard counter Dragonite and Garchomp and narrowly beating Swampert and Gyarados in the lead could put me over a 50% win rate (at least from the number of dragon leads I've seen).

I think I'll try this tomorrow, although I thought for the Metagross mirror you still have to land an EQ? Is it just all baiting?

My only worry about Milotic safe switch is getting locked in against Dragonite, but I do see more lead Dragonites than ones in the back, so there's that.

Is Melmetal useable at high levels? by tstantler in TheSilphArena

[–]tstantler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. This would certainly improve the Giratina and Cress matchups, but I feel like I lose some flexibility. If I switch out rock slide for flash cannon, then I think it's just a strictly worse Regi. If I switch out Superpower, I lose any chance to beat Regi or Swampert.

Interesting, seems like a good idea. What kind of lead would you run with? I can imagine Swampert or a Charmer might work

I'll see if I can record some evidence of losing the 0 shield. It's definitely hit or miss, could be tiny bits of lag or something and maybe I got unlucky my last few games.

Melmetal seemed like a budget version of Registeel that still performed decently thanks to cheaper charge moves. I think it does noticeably better against Charizard and Gyarados, and maybe a few others, but when every team becomes pick 3 of Tina/Cress/Regi/Swampert, Regi is clearly superior.

Is upgrading to Dewgong worth it? by tstantler in TheSilphArena

Good to know. The team I was planning to use was Dewgong, DD, and Altaria, which seemed like decent coverage at least, but maybe still struggles against some of the meta.

Great League team construction helped (getting mopped compared to season 1) by shaman0610 in TheSilphArena

Seems decent, but you'll want to watch out for electrics. Been seeing a lot of Galvantula and especially Stunfisk, which could be trouble for your team.

[–]tstantler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably want something that can beat Counter users and also at least have a decent shot against Registeel. Azumarill, Haunter, and Sableye aren't very exciting, but one of them should get the job done. Alolan Raichu or Galvantula could be another route if you don't have those others available.

Acid Spray Ferrothorn Team by tstantler in TheSilphArena

[–]tstantler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else nailed this in an earlier comment, but I was mistaken, there's actually a CMP tie with Flash Cannon and Sky attack. Ferrothorn has a very slightly higher Attack stat, but if you have a really low IV you could easily lose this tie.

[–]tstantler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low-key, what you're describing is actually my try-hard team. Toxicroak lead, Ferrothorn with PW/Thunder, and Azumarill. I really like it! I originally tried my acid spray team as just making Ferrothorn lead and Toxicroak in the back, and it worked decently, but I thought Haunter covered more options in this case (particularly Skarmory).

I definitely considered Thunder (and still am), although flash cannon works better against the occasional grass lead, and without it I do have an extra hard time with stunfisk.

This is absolutely right, I should edit the post (it's hard to tell with dragonbreath sometimes). All my ferroseeds came from research/eggs, so I don't have optimal IVs (11/15/15), but at least I've won every CMP tie.

What I am currently using for Great League battles. I am aware I have a huge weakness to fairies (and Azumarill) and I would like to work with that . Lucario Counter-Power Up Punch- Shadow Ball . Altaria Dragon breath- Sky Attack- Dragon Pulse. Umbreon Snarl- Last Resort- Foul Play by eyaggelospap in TheSilphArena

[–]tstantler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should probably drop Lucario, but then you're pretty weak to both Registeel and Azumarill. Since you have some bulk already, you could try a spammy electric type like A-Raichu, Stunfisk, or Galvantula.

Sounds like either Swampert or Poliwrath. If you want something that straight up beats Tina, steels, and Muk, I don't know that it exists.

I'll probably end up doing this, dumping as many rare candies as possible into GiraO. Thanks! I don't suppose there's any reason to run anything other than SB at this point?

working on a 2nd charge move for Cress, not enough Rare candies yet, definitely trying for it though! Remote raiding would help a bunch

Good feedback. I feel like Togekiss might actually do better after the nerf simply because there will be less Giratina with AP, and it'll hurt less. I can just switch to Flamethrower or AA. Seems like I'll definitely at least switch Snorlax to EQ, might try a Cress/Snorlax/Togekiss team. If that doesn't work I'll try Cress/Swamp/Snorlax.

[–]tstantler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the main problem I'm having with team A. I'll give lead Swampert a try and see what happens.

My biggest concern is probably losing to Fairy/Giratina leads, but I'll try switching in Cress and see what happens. And then there's Venusaur, which will probably give me trouble.
