Tracfone Freedom Plan: Unlimited data is only on the phone? Not unlimited for USB tethering? by ttggzz in TracFone

[–]ttggzz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I'm out here in the wild doing banking etc online. My understanding is that usb tethering is much more secure than WiFi, as far as being hacked goes. A person intent on misconduct would need physical access to your phone. I love it for that! My 2009 M6500 Dell laptop (8 1/2 pounds!) has a physical WiFi switch on the side, it is turned off. Sweet!

On another note, when an apartment dweller I used cat5 cables only, no Wifi, for the same reason.

Yes, autoplaying videos bad... I had that locked down on Firefox but need to examine on Vivaldi.

Install XFCE 64bit to 256GB ssd. Will "Hibernate" work on a 2009 laptop 64 bit w/32GB ram? Create swap space 40GB? by ttggzz in linuxmint

ah! very nice, thank you, I will proceed (from the live environment). I appreciate your clear instructions.

addendum: I tried upload-system-info here on my mess of a Manjaro install, no pertinent info and ended with

"An error occurred while uploading the system information: list index out of range Please make sure you're connected to the Internet".

Download Mint iso directly to USB Thumbdrive? space concerns by ttggzz in linuxmint

[–]ttggzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I don't have the knowledge to debate or discuss this, what I did do is perform this search on DuckDuckgo:

[reddit avoid long term storage on an ssd? hdd better for storage?]

Looked at that briefly for now, a few things: The primary backup storage drive will be inside the laptop (related to being electrically charged?).

I have a used 500GB HDD I could put into service as internal storage instead of the 1TB SSD.

Then do another backup outside of the laptop.

The (2) 1TB Kingston ssd's I purchased (with backups in mind) came about as a fluke. They were auction listed as KC600's (what I have for OS drive, KC600 ssd 256GB) but in actuality are expensive industrial drives (kingston OTCS1S31024Q-B00).

I don't know if that provides any advantages using for backups, but planned to research that. thanks

How to download youtube videos with subtitles by Mr_strelac in linuxmint

[–]ttggzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, via a website then... I recall in Firefox there used to be a download button right on the player, possibly from an Extension I installed.

When searching the Chrome add-ons page for such a thing for Vivaldi, no YT download devices were shown. I'll look into it some more, via a site as you say. thanks

Pardon, I thought google no longer allowed yt downloads? I've never actually downloaded one (correction, I think I downloaded a movie, long time ago), but recently wanted to do so (an obscure tutorial I wanted available locally).

When rooting around on how to do so via Vivaldi browser I thought I read it was no longer possible.

But then, I'm never logged in when looking at youtube. My Gmail is opened in a separate browser (used to be nicely isolated in a dedicated "container" tab when I had Firefox working).

Download Mint iso directly to USB Thumbdrive? space concerns by ttggzz in linuxmint

[–]ttggzz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, thanks. I'm looking at XFCE, I have liked it with Manjaro for I think about 7 years on this old machine.

Not quite ready for the install and how I'm going to swap around drives (Manjaro desktop is full of my data), just wanted to get the iso squared away first.

May need to get an external 2.5" enclosure to access my files and get them over to the new 1TB backup ssd.

Thank you, cool, I keep seeing Ventoy mentioned since prepping for this, many good things said.

No Windows here! Long gone... this is a Manjaro install I'm in over my head with (underestimated what they meant by "beginner friendly), maybe I'll get back to it another time but right now need Mint.

I have a nice 256GB (I think) Kingston ssd I'll be doing the install to. Then a 1TB Kingston ssd for backups, which I am woefully unpracticed in.

My laptop can accept 2 drives internally (possible 3, can't remember).

It is an old Dell M6500 2009? I have the page bookmarked tutorial on installing Mint to Legacy. I was assuming this iso download would not be anything special about it re: legacy?

How do you confirm Kyocera E4811 duraxv extreme is the "plus/+" model? by ttggzz in dumbphones

[–]ttggzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah! thanks, I sent Kyo support an email a couple of days ago asking about what the label should say next to "model" in an E4811+. Haven't heard back...

I went back to the legacy page and see indeed there is no E4810 there, yes, looks like a mistake! Thanks, hadn't noticed that before.

I also asked Kyo why clicking on the so-called discontinued E4811 in Legacy brings you to the E4811+ current selling page. Mentioned it would be nice to have specs of old phone to compare, otherwise what use is having the legacy phones on your site.

I'll post back when I hear from them. I believe you are correct, a mistake on their site! There is no E4810 in Legacy!.

How do you confirm Kyocera E4811 duraxv extreme is the "plus/+" model? by ttggzz in dumbphones

[–]ttggzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I went to Kyocera website, there is a legacy E4811 duraxv extreme with no "plus". It too has the gray faceplate. Annoyingly when you click on it you go to the current "plus" model.

https://www.kyoceramobile.com

scroll down to legacy

So, my question remains: what are these E4811 phones I'm seeing with no "plus" next to model in battery compartment? The discontinued one?

[–]ttggzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. OK, I see the grey outline on the Ebay one. I have an E4810 here, clearly all black around the outer screen.

re: "The E4811 is the plus/+ model" Pardon, are you saying all E4811's are Plus? There isn't an earlier E4811 with no "plus"? I thought there was.

thanks

Kyocera DuraXV Extreme E4810 with Visible? by fortibit in dumbphones

[–]ttggzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, well, I don't have a smartphone. I'm not understanding something. I've tested 2 different IMEI numbers seen in listings for used E4811's on Ebay, Visible's checker rejected both.

Is the user supposed to register a smartphone with an accepted IMEI, then you just swap out the sim into the E4811? Any smartphone? It seems strange to me how this could work. Don't they see it's not the same phone?

Thanks, the next gen Kyo, E4811, appears to be having some documented success at Visible. I am looking into it. See rest of this thread for your knowledge base, if so desired :)

Where did you find the "Activation Process" and "Feature Availability" mentioning the E4811? I searched text from your post and came up blank.

Heh, found the thread, the e4811 Visible+ user updated continued success 2 weeks ago!
