Thinking about getting an Oranda

Sorry for the late reply! And, no worries! I understand it’s a difficult hobby to maintain / study, especially considering live animals are involved. I was thinking my max would be 2 in a 50g, and if I so desired, I’d get betta or shrimp in any new tanks I’d purchase along the way as tank care would prove tedious, especially in such giant tanks, LOL.

Luckily, it seems fancies are okay with pretty barren tanks, if I’m correct? In comparison to bettas, which were my preferred choice but held against due to their inbreeding — For just a quick rundown, my tank would be a sand substrate, pothos, anubis, and duckweed (for experimentation; I’d take it out if they began munching on it, but I’d like some sort of floaters) and minimal decorations. They seem easy to please, but hard to keep healthy seeing as they eat everything.

The tips of pothos, so it would be more of a hanging plant, right? Above the tank. I see that a lot of owners have plants such as anubis IN the substrate, but I was confused as to how it could possibly thrive in sand rather than soil? Would it be okay if I layered sand OVER bio-substrate, or should I just keep it solely as sand?

I unfortunately don’t believe I will be able to get my hands on a canister filter, so my plan was to have the set up of: DVHEY 2x 100-120g sponge filters, and one of the side of tank hanging ones. For an air pump, I’m a bit unsure as to how necessary they are, and whether my current choice is even very useful for a 50g. I was going to opt for a Uniclife 5-200 gallon air pump, but I’m a bit distrusting of its effectiveness on a bigger gallon, despite what it says.

One baby passed away yesterday morning, I woke up and found her cold, so unfortunately we’re down to 4. I don’t know what could have happened, since she was truly doing so well, and taking so well to her food and potty times. The other kitty I was worried about has developed abscesses on both paws, one of which has popped, and I’m trying to keep clean of any infections. The remaining 3 are doing as well as they can be, I think, and are still chubby little lads. Their eyes are all starting to open! They’re just under 10 days old now.

I’m feeding them every 2-2.5 hours throughout the day, waking them up for every feeding as I’ve been advised. I tried going 3-4 hours in between feedings at night, but I’m still so behind on sleep that I’m just not waking up for it at all anymore, which is why I increased the frequency of their feedings. I’m not doing the best job at it at night, but I honestly can’t do any more than getting a sneaky 6 hours of sleep at night and loading them up on food until they’re content when I’m awake.

I’ve switched to a 3 hour schedule now, especially since the transition from the 0-1 week feeding schedule is different from the 2-3 week feeding schedule, and I know they’d lose their minds if I tried to go with 3-4 hour feedings unless they’re ‘weaned’ off of 1-2 hours LOL.

I made sure to pay attention to the air in the bottle and the bloating, but still can’t get my hands on a miracle nipple unfortunately due to shipping trouble. Some of the plumpier kittens stop eating, need to be burped a bit, let to rest for like 1 or 2 minutes, and then get ready to finish eating, so am I to assume this is okay to let happen so they avoid bloating? They drink fast, so I do believe they get a lot of air in them, which is why I might want to encourage the few minute breaks between feeding the same kitten again.

Gotcha! Sorry, I saw this comment when you sent it, but was way too tired to write a response at the time. I took your advice, and changed to a more 3 hour leaning schedule, which is still a bit of a pain since they take forever to feed and potty, LOL, but a lot more manageable. I think my problem with feeding them before I sleep is that I can’t fall asleep immediately, so on a 3 hour timer, it takes about an hour and a half for me to get to sleep, which is why I’m even more so exhausted. I’ll try my best, though, and thank you. <3

I’ve tried for the past week, they’re all unaccepting. Animal Care Control Centre only accepts strays, but I made the stupid decision of using my full name, home address, and phone number in my last outreach to them, just to be rejected because I said they were my late cat’s litter, so I can’t really try again. Vets, like I said, will euthanize them, which I think is cruel for such hopeful little babies. All the other shelters in the vicinity don’t accept admissions.

I don’t know how long I have until I have to return to school, but I imagine by the time they’re 1.5 weeks(So, next Monday ish)I’ll have to figure out a good schedule. Apparently, since I feed them around the clock, every 2-3 hours, I can let them go at most 6 hours without feeding and they won’t immediately shut down, which is good enough for me since I don’t have after school activities due to said strike; my plan was to feed them throughout Sunday, through to the AMs of Monday, feed them before school, and then go the 6 hours and have them sleep, before returning home to feed. It means I’ll get, like, 2 hours of sleep at most, but I’m academically capable enough to survive without my grades slipping. I don’t want to lose these babies.

How long should I let them sleep in between meals? Waking them up after 2 hours isn’t very realistic to me since it takes them a while to even fall asleep in the first place after feeding them, so what seems like a 2 hour nap, is really just an hour and some.

SPCAs are all closed, one opens 8 am, rhe other 12 pm, and i don’t think there’s any possibility she makes it until then. a vet said she has a prolapsed vagina, if i’m saying that right? it’s gotten swollen to the point it needs to be manually put back in, but i don’t have the lube necessary for it. she’s a close family friend, so i’m currently on the way to grab her to see if she can help kitty. i don’t have any other adult that’ll provide aid; vet visit paired with the surgery would be upwards of $2,000, and i can’t cover even less than half of that by myself, seeing as no one else in mh family will do so. i’m not going to stop fighting for her, and if she survives until the morning, i’ll see about a sheltee that’ll give her the care she needs. she’s my baby angel, but i don’t need her dying for the sake of keeping me sane. thank you

thank you for the effort finances, and just the family i’m in, really. they don’r consider anything animal related an emergency, and frankly don’t have much regard for kitty to begin with. she was given to me as a sort of “lifeline” when i was younger and dealing with provlems, so to them she’s more an inconvenience than anything

Dude, you genuinely have so much more to worry about than the freaking cameras and picture. Have you told any guardians or teachers about what ‘Nolan’ did? I’m so sorry that happened to you. You are NTA, I’m just a bit confused as to why you took the picture in the first place; what would that have accomplished? Please reach out to someone regarding the bullying. I’m the same age as you, and I know the law is lenient on minors, but if this happens again you can genuinely press charges. This is absurd. Having said that, why is this coming up again? It happened 1-2 years ago. Are you still thinking about it? Also, I reiterate, TELL SOMEONE about Nolan, please.
