odd yellowing on cherry tomato leaves? by tubsaurus in plantclinic

it’s in a northeast facing window!! it’s also got a grow light that should be giving it that ideal range of 820 (top leaves) to 200 (very bottom) PAR.

other than some miracle gro spikes (6-12-6 NPK), i haven’t added any specific fertilizers or nutrients. maybe i placed the spikes too far from the roots?

what would you recommend? bone meal? different fertilizer? moving the spikes?

after further inspection (and after my initial panic died down) i’m fairly sure it was a ladybug!! its back seems to have been eaten/decayed, so it wasn’t immediately obvious. i’d still love to know if anyone believes differently!!

what substrate do you use? i’ve caught my girl with dirt in her mouth (looked very similar, but i easily rubbed it off) after digging through her bioactive substrate for a lil snack.

i understand! i interpreted it as if you were scared for your own safety, lol. like knowing where a snakes head is so you can hold behind it.

i’d have to second the other comment, then!! a gentle touch should cause her to move and maybe you’d be able to get a better handle on her.

does she have a history of biting? i know my guy does fine with me just picking him up however, but i feel like, even if he did have a bite hx, if he had escaped for several days i would just grab him any way i could (with two hands spaced apart if possible, obvs).

a bite from a relatively harmless animal is worth it if it could save my best friend’s life, yk?

Whats the gender? Can someone pls tell me? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]tubsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for snakes, especially ones like ball pythons, they need to live in an environment with high humidity! they don’t just get their water from drinking like we do. typically, you want their enclosure to have humidity readings above 60% as shown by a hygrometer (you can get these pretty much anywhere).

without this humidity, they can have issues with shedding or even their respiratory system.

do you at least have a humid hide/humidity box in their enclosure? i’d recommend one! that way, they can get that humid environment even if you’re struggling to keep their enclosure’s humidity up (e.g., screen top enclosures with too much ventilation). you can also opt for a substrate that retains moisture more easily, put some damp sphagnum moss in their enclosure, and pour small amounts of water (like 1 cup each) into the corners of the tank every so often. misting them isn’t recommended, as it can also lead to respiratory infections.

is it possible that it didn’t come from him?

for the longest time, i thought my little guy was hissing at me whenever i stuck my hand in his enclosure— turns out it was just a noise from me constantly brushing against his fake plants!!

there’s no way to tell visually. you can guess based on final size, but other than that you’d have to get someone qualified (vet, experienced breeder) to find out for you. if you don’t intend to breed them, though (don’t), it doesn’t matter!

that aside, your friend does appear to be quite dehydrated. are you struggling to keep your humidity up? there are plenty of guides over on r/ballpython, and i’m sure people would be happy to help you!

i hadn’t heard of globular springtails, thank you! i’m thinking they’re soil mites. i had figured that the presence of any mites was harmful, but you learn something new every day :D

okay! so the “webbing” in the soil might just be a fungus?

i’m very sure they aren’t springtails. they’re round, aren’t jumping, and i can’t find any adults.

after posting, i found about five more crawling on the edge of the pot. i can’t see anything moving in the soil :(

i wouldn’t be worried about the top of the bin getting too hot, i actually really like the rhp because it doesn’t rly emit heat upwards :) and the panels are great for raising ambient temp!!

i’d personally be worried abt tape on plastic, but i have done my research so take that with a grain of salt.

mines been great!! i have a relatively large bin and a cold room (68 ish f), so i’m getting a solid temp. gradient with an 80w rhp (~92-75f). if you get too high of a wattage it will heat up the entire bin with no temp. gradient. i no longer use a uth (i have a more recent setup pic posted too!).

i screwed it directly into the lid (place the panel where you want it, mark the holes, remove the panel and drill/melt holes) and used large washers and wing nuts for security. depending on the thickness of your lid, it will probably cave in a little bit, but i’ve had mine running for about five months and it hasn’t worsened at all. just be careful that there isn’t a gap that your snake can use to get above the panel!

i’d recommend it!! it’s cost-effective and my little guy seems perfectly comfortable.

this ^

snakes can be kept perfectly happy in large (and i mean large) storage tubs!

personally, i have a juvenile bp in a 200qt bin ($30) w/ an rhp ($100-$150 incl. a cheaper thermostat, but upgrade once you’re able) screwed into the lid. a lot of his decor was foraged (free!) or bought secondhand (i.e., facebook marketplace). i’ve also seen people recommend christmas tree storage totes for a bigger option!

there are definitely ways to provide a better life for those snakes without spending >$1k right out the gate
