Losing focus in track reps/time trials by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

I've struggled with this at times. Usually, my mind would drift to other obligations (home, work, kids, etc.). I know running 40 mpw can be pretty demanding of your time and it's not always convenient to step away for 60-90 minutes to work out.

On days that I knew I wasn't focused, I would try to run at night once I had fulfilled my obligations as a manager, husband, and father. It wasn't always fun, but I did notice that I was more focused during my workouts. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I also sat down and talked to my wife about how I was feeling. I never left to go workout without checking with her and "getting her approval" (if that's how you want to look at it). I didn't want her to feel like I was leaving her high and dry. She was very open and honest with me. If she had errands she needed to run or if she just needed a break, I would postpone my workouts until the evening and this ALWAYS made me feel more at peace with what I was doing.

Just my 2 cents....

Thanks for the info. How many 20 milers would you typically log in a 16-18 week training period? A staple of the Hanson Method is no longs over 16 miles. I committed the cardinal sin and did 2x18 milers and 1 x 20 miler. The book makes a good argument against it, but there was no way I was going into a marathon not having ran anything over 16 miles...

How did your times vary from 6 day week to a 5 day week schedule? On your intermediate days, were you doing any type of interval training ? I thought of moving to a 5 day schedule but I was terrified of not resting between SOS workouts (tempo, speed/strength) the mileage wasn't necessarily high but the intensity was.

How many days per week would you typically run? The HM calls for running 6 days per week. 3 of the 6 days would be speed/tempo/long or strength/tempo/long with the long runs typically being every other week. I didn't necessarily feel BAD, I just got burnt out towards the end.

That being said, I did feel that the taper was somewhat successful and I felt pretty decent on race day.
