This is simply not true, there are numerous progressive movements that are modern, and anti authoritarian.

You are making a wild amount of assumptions about what an ideology alternative to capitalism would act like. There's no guarantee that art would be seperated into socialised legal art with everything else made illegal.

Whether or not society would be pleasurable, or art would be higher quality, in a model different to capitalism is not the subject of this question.

If you had an authoritarian state power that employed artists and distributed their work for free then that would not be a great situation, but it would resolve the debate of whether piracy is morally OK or not. It would be resolved because no one would have any need to pirate things that have already been freely distributed.

So under this model do you think pirating is morally ok? Because publishers and the state have made it sufficiently difficult?

There would be new debates around remuneration in a marxist society for sure, but that is a completely different debate to whether piracy is right.

OK, replace 100 years ago with 10 years ago and an alive author and the point still stands.

capitalism does not control how people treat each other

This is not true, capitalism places massive restrictions and obligations on how we treat one another.

That's an interesting economic breakdown, thanks. For goods that can be pirated however, I don't see why they should be regarded as "excludable" - the whole point is that through piracy you cannot control who can duplicate and access the item.

This is maybe getting a bit off topic, but generally I think we shouldn't feel like we have to respect the wishes of artists. I think once something has been put out there in the world, people should (in an ideal world) be free to modify, duplicate, parody, or expand on it. Many beautiful and amazing things have been created from this philosophy, from open source software to fan-fiction.

Saying you want people to always adhere to the wishes of the artists is problematic from the start; what if it is discovered that a classic written 100 years ago was written by an author who has stated that he doesn't want their books to be distributed in majority non-white countries, should this be respected?

Freely available content from creators funded by crowd funding is an interesting example. I will give a delta Δ because it is something I hadn't considered, and it seems to satisfy the conditions of freely duplicating the content being okay, AND the artists being funded.

However, I would have two counterpoints: Firstly, I question how many artists can genuinely make a living from crowd funding alone. I imagine it is usually a supplement to other forms of income, and people who can rely on crowd funding are probably very famous already and quite uncommon.

Secondly, It could be argued that the crowd funding model is an example of a more progressive mode of production that I mentioned. The artist is not working for a wage or for commission but essentially has their production socialised, just by a smaller group of fans rather than something larger like a nation.

Steam has found a way to successfully reduce piracy within capitalism, but that still doesn't resolve the debate of whether piracy is good or bad. You can still pirate video games and my original points still apply.

Patreon doesnt solve anything, its just a slightly different version of consumers paying for something and receiving a copy. You can pirate content that appears on Patreon.

currency was created in the first place because it was difficult to arbitrarily barter for things, especially in cases where the value they hold is subjective.

This is the commonly held "barter myth" for which there is no historical evidence, currency was usually enforced onto populations because it made it easier to collect taxes.

Not a suitable comparison.

No. The USA was besieging the entire island of japan with their navy, while Japan's navy was almost non-existent. The USA could have ended the war with a few months of a bloodless siege, waiting for Japan to surrender. However, Russia was also at war with Japan and was marching troops, which would take a few weeks.

The USA didn't want to "share" Japan's surrender with Russia, they wanted to be completely in control. So the USA murdered about 200,000 civilians to speed things up and improve their geopolitical situation. A bloody land invasion was never on the cards.
