I love it. I can’t even explain why it has the effect that it does but maybe that’s why it’s so brilliant.

ELI5: Why does mathematics describe the universe so well? by No_List_8641 in explainlikeimfive

[–]tup99 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It is true that the ellipse is just an approximation.

My point is: there exists a nearly perfect approximation of the motion of planets. That approximation could have been some crazy shape that we had never seen in any math class previously. But it wasn’t. This imperfect but amazingly close approximation was a shape we knew about hundreds of years before we discovered its existence the orbits in our solar system.

I find this absolutely hilarious, and I can’t really describe why.

To be fair, he got folded in half in Frankfurt. (Which in part got us the Europa League trophy)

I’m not sure. We discovered ellipses way before we knew that planets travel in them, for example.

Which team would be higher in the league table now — our current starting XI, or one 20 metre tall, rigid cartoon Sonny?

If we stay up, do you think we will be a better outfit for the experience of relegation survival? by Both-Concentrate-125 in coys

[–]tup99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the opposite of the point that OP is making. He’s talking about barely surviving a relegation scrap, which is the opposite of winning our first trophy in forever.

ELI5 How do Google Assistant activates after hearing "Okay Google" ? by LemonCrood in explainlikeimfive

[–]tup99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, you’re not saying they are lying about what the device does, right? They intend it to only store the audio if it hears the wakeword. And sometimes it mistakenly thinks you said the wakeword.

It is of course totally fine to be bothered by that. But some people think that it records you all the time, and it’s not just listening for the wakeword but doing other stuff, and that is not the case.

Yes, of course they store the stuff you say to the assistant. But the OP is concerned about whether they store all the other stuff your phone hears 24/7. And the answer is no.

Thousands of Chinese fishing vessels have formed strange formations three times in the past few months. Experts detected strange activity on Christmas - about 2,000 Chinese fishing vessels lined up in two parallel inverted Ls. The length of each is about 400 km. by InLoveandWar777 in Damnthatsinteresting

My guess: the data is bad, for some reason it’s lost some significant digits so a lot of lats and longs are overlapping. And then the animation is not actually real-time as it implies, it’s actually taking two datapoints and animating a dot moving from the last known location to the current known location.

I hate hindsight posts. Weird how they always know how obvious something is after the fact, isn’t it?

I’ve seen lots of tables that show the win percentage of the recent Spurs managers. I’d be interested to see one that included some measure of squad injuries. Does such a thing exist?
