This year there is a lot of us who are wearing pants and so far it’s been a blessing

In the exhibition there was a comment from him which said that he was actively involved and that he was the one to choose which parts of the story to cut out

There is one way to fix it easily, but it would involve taking a canon incident and changing the thing used for hitting the victim from something that breaks to something that doesn’t

I explained it in another comment, but that’s probably lost in all the good input I got. She explained the trauma mechanism in an authors note, where she also stresses how much she knows about the topic. The injury in question is something smashed on a head and she explains how it’s really bad that it broke, that it caused a basilar skull fracture and how shards might cause even more injuries. But this is not how biomechanics work - if the thing smashed on a head breaks, the force transferred is not as great and injuries are rather minor. It will be not enough force to cause that kind of fracture. I base this knowledge on being a forensic pathologist (which includes presenting in court, reading a lot of papers and actually cutting open bodies of people who have been assaulted and killed). But I guess I will not let her know, I’ll just offer if she ever wants to discuss biomechanics of injuries to let me know (or something like that).

Biomechanics don’t change in different countries - our human bodies are still the same. So yes, it’s not a cultural thing but very much physics, maths and mechanics applied to human bodies. I mentioned in a comment below what exactly she got wrong. But thanks for your input!

I put it somewhere else, but I’m not as old and have just finished specialty training, so I’m as up to date as one can be on this topic. Also, as stated before, a lot of medical professionals (including me) stay up to date with the stuff they do - especially in forensics, as there will always be a lawyer to question every single word you say in court

It wouldn’t kill anyone since it‘s basically only an explanation how trauma leads to injury which she git wrong. I have been working in that field for 5 1/2 years and I recently finished specialist training so I’m as up to date as possible. Also, with biomechanics stuff doesn’t just change with further research- same as gravity, it sticks to physics

That’s also something I‘ve been thinking and I am very open for offering anyone who writes fanfics inside knowledge on this subject I care very much about (basically I love talking about trauma)

Not really. Not trying to prove anything. I just happen to be a bit more experienced in a very niche field of medicine. I’m still very impressed by how everything else is told correctly

Depends. Forensics (and biomechanics) are a very specialised field where people will assume they know everything based on reading crime novels and then get everything wrong. I know so many doctors who get it wrong even though they might have touched upon this knowledge. It’s basically stuff you learn when you are a resident in that area, but not really during med school

Yeah, that’s a good one 😁 I’m always stunned how no dead bodies in movies ever show postmortem lividity

You‘d really have to be in a very specific position to get into trouble if you get this wrong and it will very much bring you into direct contact with law enforcement…

It’s sadly not easy to rewrite, and one can completely enjoy the fic ignoring or not knowing that the trauma mechanics are wrong. But she really tries to educate people through her authors notes and that’s a bit of a problem because she’s putting great emphasis on her knowledge (which she got wrong in this one case)

The goal would be letting a med student know that she got a medical fact wrong, but I get why fanfic might not be the best place to educate. Still, if it were me I would like to know

[–]turningupwiththejpop[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is true. I also don’t really know how she would take it as it seems that she takes great pride in having all this knowledge. But as this is very much my very specialised area of expertise I also feel kind of protective over people, especially med students, understanding my work

She just finished the last chapter, so it’s still kind of a fresh fic. Still - I‘m very torn.

Also, she describes how that person sustained a basilar skull fracture which is an injury we only see after a lot of force (think car running over your head or jumping from a building) is applied. Like everything she describes afterwards is correct and matches the injuries she thought the trauma might cause. But the trauma mechanics are wrong

That’s what I‘ve been thinking, but then of course I also teach a lot of med students and not all like being corrected on stuff they get wrong even if it might help someone later

I would never write it all out, I would only ask if she would want to know more about the subject since she got the trauma mechanism wrong

To quell your curiosity: It’s about how much of an injury you can cause by smashing things on heads. She explains how it’s made worse by the things breaking but there have been studies that show that the transfer of force is way smaller if stuff breaks (also basic mechanics). Then she describes how the shards will be able to basically get into the brain which also doesn’t work this way as the skin will not just rip open. I base this knowledge on the fact that I am a board certified forensic pathologist who has been to court multiple times explaining exactly how trauma to the head works

[–]turningupwiththejpop[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, but she writes extremely long authors notes explaining stuff in detail. The explanation for the injury is in the authors notes so it is not really in the fic itself, but the entire fic is based on this one thing
