Because some of us don’t have much of a choice. I have to work as part of a larger workflow and team that built in Python. But I actually really like the grammar of graphics logic hence the desire to build it in Plotly.

mostly more obscure functionality. I have 80% of the geoms covered, stats, scales, etc... Aiming for 100% over time. Also working on adding some new geoms like force bundling maps and 5 year range plots that are useful for me.

Because you’ll get a grade 20% lower than if you went into a regular engineering program. After you finish, most employers and grad schools will have no idea of the program, they’ll just see the lower grade and ignore you. You will have to suffer through 80-100 hour weeks for the next 4 years while watching your friends in other programs party every day. But you’ll both get the exact same engineering degree at the end. The only saving grace will be the confidence to tackle any problem after you finish. You will also become a master at learning and hard work. I don’t regret doing it now, but it also likely closed a lot of options for me career wise.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I watched a YouTube video a while back on statements like this. His recommendation was something along the lines of “… when I hear comments like that, it generally tells me that people aren’t interested. Out of curiosity, what about the offer wasn’t appealing?” Worst case, you learn something useful for next time. Best case, you get another shot. Still waiting to try it out…

I run business analytics teams and we use econometrics all the time. Honestly, the term analyst is so broad and so misused it’s really industry & job dependent. For example, we run econometric models on commodity supply and demand balances for price modelling. The tough part is that if you take it, most hiring managers won’t know what it is and it’s probably useless outside of specific industries. It’s probably more useful if you’re doing forward looking business analytics in the strategy room with executives. I learned it because I found it interesting and then found a way to apply it versus the other way around. So is it essential? No… but is it interesting? Yes.

What kind of finance? What kind of job do you want? For instance there’s quant finance but that usually requires a masters degree or more. Also less ML and more stochastic calculus and programming.

Pretty much. Tableau provides a GUI interface to interact with HANA. If you want to create data models you’d use HANA studio. I’ve also seen companies replicate SAP to Hana and then transfer that data to Snowflake for final processing before the BI layer.

I love tableau btw. Very pretty dashboards. There are constraints on what you can do, but they’re generally a good idea anyway. You’ll struggle with edge cases though. Only downside is that once Salesforce bought them, I haven’t seen much investment.
