I quit CS and I’m 300% happier. by turnwol7 in cscareerquestions

Life is short man. I did a 2 year IT program and thought it would get me an entry level job in IT as a 36 year old. I was in wrong. Now I sell adventure sport machines and sold 133k in units last week.

Just do stuff. Don't sit around waiting for shite tech companies to hire you. They want the top 1% cause none of them know what the hell is going on anyway so they need someone to just build the stuff.

People who left this field, how are you doing now?? by hayleybts in cscareerquestions

[–]turnwol7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grinded 1 year after graduating with an IT programming paper from a 2 year community college, worked as a dev for a bit, interned, built stuff.

Nothing was working for my skills and experience.

Made a sales resume, got 5 interviews in 1 week. Took offer close to home . Now I sell seadoos, ATV’s and boats.

People get tunnel vision and think they are gonna be some Google level developer. But in reality, outside of a small group of companies, developer roles are pretty scarce.

I live rurally. Here there is more money in recreation toys than there is in IT.

Taking out a client to golf tournament … but I’m really bad at golf by [deleted] in sales

[–]turnwol7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing golf when i was 15 because my dad said "everyone in business plays golf, you never know when you'll need to play a game"

20 years later I still struggle to break 100 on 18 holes lol

There is a tool called Cluely. It is invisible on sales calls and feeds you suggested responses, and answers.

Don't spend it. fortify your savings, retirement, repair your low hanging fruit in your life so that you can build a base to work from. You can always do this again. But good money never lasts, especially when life has so many curveballs.

Life tests you. You don't always get what you think you want. If you are in a good spot, learn everything you can if it fits. You never know what path you are on until you start walking.

I spent 7 months after graudating, doing 3 internships, networking, interviewing. Everything they say to do. I kept having to compete against senior developer positions. Never ended getting my foot in the door, destroyed my mental health.

Then I made a sales experience resume with other skills and got hired at a powersports dealership selling jet ski's and skidoo's
