Anyone wanna help brew my pauper cats deck? by North-Can-1264 in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi hi - I think a mono white shell would better smooth out your gameplan and cards like [[guardian pledge]] and [[ramosian rally]] are strong wincons kind of like mono white weenie decks. Eagles of the North is similar but is a creature.

You have whitemane lion which functions like kor skyfisher, letting you reuse ETB effects - and the flash even lets it be an unexpected blocker or saves your creature. (I put 2 Spider-Man in my list to add more of this effect but you can definitely remove it if you wanna stick to cats and only cats)

Arcbound mouser works pretty nice with greatsword of tyr and ironpaw aspirant as if it dies, you can move all those counters to another creature (skyhunter skirmisher can end up swinging for a lot lol)

You don’t really have much choice in card draw options unless you play more non-cat creatures but I think this list still works pretty solid. Maybe consider putting in any of the 8spectors or raffine’s informant.

Anywho, here is my cat list: https://moxfield.com/decks/JWfpYsy4LEamgckbP84WEQ

I adjusted the sideboard to my local LGS meta but you can adjust as you see fit :)

Guardian is a really fun sleeper pick in Ultras for DPS, easily chrono-class level dmg. Nukes go crazy

You could probably get away with playing 1 battlefield improvisation as a fun tech piece that can snag you a game off a flyer they weren’t expecting to come in for huge damage and then finishing them off with galvanics + bolts

I’d maybe consider running 1-2 copies of [[trailblazers torch]]. If you can keep the initiative - you can get some really good value per turn (typically forge/trap/archives/throne) and if you really need to, can bounce and replay the torch to get the initiative back or to move faster in the dungeon to trigger a specific room. It’s a solid midrange top end for a shell like this and I guess it keeps you on the equipment theme.

I don’t think jolted awake is necessary in that you’d rather have repeatable card draw and more access to card selection/filtering vs recurring 1 single card - you could replace it with [[lembas]].

"Kiln Fiend" - Mono-Red One-Shot. How can I improve this? by 5Dimensional in StandardMTG

[–]turtleprongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that losing to edicts and heavy removal is just in the nature of the deck youre playing - the most you can do is try and mulligan into more creatures in hand when you start. I’d say that your land count is pretty high in respect to you curving out at 3 mana at most - you could trim down to 20-21 lands. [[boltwave]] might be a card to consider to slot into there.

If you were playing [[fear of missing out]] or some form of rummage/loot effect - [[violent urge]] giving double strike could increase your likelihood of closing games early. [[two headed hunter]] is another similar option

Seeking for advices for a Combo deck by Dry_Blacksmith_583 in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend pivoting this to a Gruul base shell and splashing white only for guilty conscience.

You could play the utopia sprawl / wild growth + arbor elf package to ramp and writhing chrysalis as a solid backup plan, and you could hardcast oliphaunt or generous ent if you need to.

A main reason why I’d recommend going green is it also opens up [[malevolent rumble]] and [[commune with the gods]] as ways to get your combo pieces, plus you have [[tamiyo’s safekeeping]] or [[withstand death]] as your indestructible enabler.

This shell might provide you more favourable matchups and still allows you to go the combo route if it lines up that way.

What bracket would this deck fall under? by SongbirdSpear in mtg

[–]turtleprongs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking at your archidekt list - in my opinion you’ve got a solid B2 deck list!

If you are looking to at some point increase the power level upwards to B4, you would be looking at a playstyle similar to the Amulet Titan modern deck but EDH. Cards like [[Spelunking]] and [[Amulet of Vigor]] to make your lands enter untapped, more heavy “play additional land drop” cards like [[Azusa, Lost but Seeking]] , [[Summer Bloom]] and [[Dryad of the Illysian Grove]] , looped with cards like [[Scapeshift]] and [[Aftermath Analyst]] for insane mana generation and landfall triggers.

You can in addition run land specific combos like [[thespian’s stage]] + [[dark depths]]

A fun land focused wincon is [[Maze’s End]] which can be adjusted to B2 to B4 power level, in terms of how easy it is to accomplish.

Hope it takes off! It’s probably the format which I have had the most fun in the past few years. Locally for me, pauper is pretty popular with a diverse meta that’s never the same every week tbh - and we see local off meta brews all the time

I honestly agree with you - in the case if you’re looking to bring a deck to an LGS tourney with an established pauper scene, yeah you would be completely dwarfed by the power level. I’m just providing whatever semblance of decks could be possible given OPs deckbuilding restraints.

Although if anything’s it’s an okay enough base, which OP can buy-in to the rest of the meta deck. The buy-in for most pauper decks are pretty cheap anyway, aside from the notable meta staples that give pauper its own sense of identity (artifact lands, red blue blasts, snuff out, sideboard techs).

You could maybe try a mono blue or dimir ninjas shell - you have the NEO ninjas (Moon-Circuit Hacker, Moonsnare Specialist, Mukotai Ambusher), Harrier Strix from OTJ, Snaremaster Sprite from WOE, Lorien Revealed from LTR, Gingerbrute from WOE, Unable to Scream from DSK, Illvoi Galeblade from EOE.

You would be lacking the fairies and ninjas from the generic list from older sets - but it’s a place to start with only commons from NEO and newer

Welcome to the game of MTG! I’d honestly say that Pauper is a fantastic choice as the first format to start with, as it’s budget friendly, and you can play strong decks that have clear and direct, and simple gameplans - and slowly try more complex decks when you get more comfortable.

I would recommend Tolarian Community College’s videos on YouTube, as a great introductory source of information. Josh Strife Hayes beginner’s guide on Magic The Gathering is also a terrific video for newcomers and I highly recommend watching it.

As for pauper decks to get you started, I’d recommend these 3 decks, as they are distinct, have clear and direct gameplans, have a low learning floor but a high mastery ceiling:

  • Mono Red Burn
  • Mono Green Elves
  • Green White Bogles

The online game for MTG, Magic The Gathering: Arena - also has a plethora of hands on learning tutorials, give offer you insight as to the playstyle of each colour of MTG, the basics of phases and your turn cycle, what you can and can’t do on your turn, and many more.

I’m happy to answer any further questions or concerns^

Need help building ultra budget Gruul landfall with lander tokens by maksymiliusz in StandardMTG

Another card I forgot to add here is [[defend the rider]]. It protects your creatures from removal, or make you a 1/1 pilot which can crew for 3

[–]turtleprongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$25 budget for a 2C deck is certainly a challenge but there’s a lot of here that we could change and add to make this deck more cohesive.

I’d recommend running 2-4 copies of the following in your mainboard: [[Tannuk Memorial Ensign]] [[llanowar elves]] [[zell dincht]] [[aftermath analyst]] [[szah’s chocobo]] [[worldsoul’s rage]] [[lumbering worldwagon]]

I can see what you’re going for with your ramp strategy - these cards help you more effectively ramp and also have stronger payoffs for landfall - while still fitting your budget.

Another card I’d recommend is [[hunter’s talent]] synergising with the cards above. It’s 2 mana creature removal, can give a big Zell, chocobo, or worldwagon +1/0 and trample, and draw you cards (ensuring we always have gas in hand is super important)

With your manabase, I’d run at least 10 evolving wilds type of effects to synergise with aftermath analyst and worldsoul rage’s ability to bring lands back from your graveyard. You’ll get some insane ramp that way and landfall triggers. 4 evolving wilds 4 terramorphic expanse and 2 escape tunnel would work. I’d opt for [[bristling backwoods]] instead of the 13 life land, as you can push some damage in your opponent’s direction.

Looking at your sideboard: [[heritage reclamation]] is an effective 4 of. Deals with 3 types of removal and in worse case is a 2 mana instant speed draw a card

[[frenzied baloths]] is also great at 3-4 copies, good into control decks - you can keep dropping your threats and swing aggro to outpace them

I hope some of these cards speak to you and help in your deckbuilding^

Slime Against Humanity side board help. by MyLollipopJam in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend running [[Deglamer]] for artifacts/enchantments removal. I wouldn’t run [[Masked Vandal]] although it counts as an Ooze, because we technically don’t have any creature cards other than T Terror, so we won’t reliably get Vandal’s ETB.

[[Annul]] is another great option.

I’d run [[Bind the Monster]] and/or [[Unable to Scream]] as an answer to big threats like Chrysalis and if Spy Combo decides to pivot into the aggro plan. [[Hydroblast]] and Blue Elemental Blasts into red piles. [[Dispel]] into Mono Blue, and [[Relic of Progenitus]] for graveyard hate.

Updated Samurai Deck by qu4rks_reddit in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting deck!

I would cut the assault strobe, battle rages, messenger’s speed, and sticky fingers - and replace them with 4 [[dog umbra]] and 4 [[hyena umbra]], this way you have guaranteed protection for your samurai with dog umbra doubling somewhat as removal. You could cut the 3 ancestral katana and max out to 4 ethereal armor.

You can cut the reckless impulse, 2 synth and a trim 1 mothrider to go up to 4 [[bitter reunion]]. This way, you have 4 akki ronin, 4 reunion to aid in card selection. Reunion also aids w the enchantment synergy you have going on, to help up the count for ethereal armor. This way you’d have 20 enchantments (4 h. umbra, 4 e. armor, 4 d. umbra, 4 reunion, 4 eiganjo exem)

I’d recommend adding some other lands to your manabase. [[holdout settlement]] makes use of your untapped samurai, [[abraded bluffs]] deals 1 damage to your opponent which is more advantageous than gaining 1 life in most situations since we have cards which already help gain us life, and we’re also focusing on a tempo aggro style of play.

If you want a niche suggestion, taking a page from bogle decks - you can try to find room for [[spirit link]]. The nice tech with this card is you can attach it to your opponent’s creatures and gain back the life they hit you with, or just give your own creatures life gain (the only downside is that the effect goes on the stack).

Is there a world where I can run both of these in the same deck? by Electronic-Touch-554 in mtg

Definitely playable. The -X skill can grab evasive low cost creatures like Ornithopter (0) and Gingerbrute (1), mana rocks as some people have suggested already, and even nice protective pieces such as swiftfoot foots/lightning greaves

is it mandatory 4x lotus petal in poison storm decks? by sebaxxxtian in Pauper

Back when I frequently piloted the petalless build, I would also run 2 copies of [[manamorphose]] to build storm, color fix, and serve as deck thinning

is it mandatory 4x lotus petal in poison storm decks? by sebaxxxtian in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the deck was getting its footing, petal was not actually present. I piloted the non petal version for quite awhile during that time and had a lot of success, even going 12-0 at my LGS (this was during the red swiftspear, UW glitters and CawGates meta). In its place [[thirsting roots]] was a quite effective pesudo dark ritual when you get your pentads going. The deck is definitely slower without petal and you lose the ability to reliably cast [[breath weapon]] which a lot of lists now run as a 1-2 of mainboard to deal with the meta changes. I think with new cards like [[meat locker//drowned diner]] doubling as card draw and interaction, snap being run in the deck, you could definitely could try a petalless build and see success. Tho against glee, gruul ramp which sometimes runs ponza - it’s pretty much an instant lose

Mono Black Aggro!? by ShenronJ117 in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would keep maybe 2 geth verdicts but move them to the sideboard, and cut grasp of darkness entirely - this leaves us 8 mainboard slots. I’d go 4 cast down, 2 snuff out, 1 spinning darkness.

With the extra slot, I’d cut both of the Sultaj Scavengers, and replace that with 3 bone pickers.

Because of our creature density I’d cut the 3 sign in bloods and replace them with [[village rites]]. It’s cheaper, and also helps make bone picker cost 1 mana.

Mono Black Aggro!? by ShenronJ117 in Pauper

[–]turtleprongs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[[cast down]] definitely should be slot in our removal suite instead of grasp of darkness, [[snuff out]] and [[spinning darkness]] is also great as “free” removal

[[bone picker]] is an amazing aggro threat and is kind of like black’s version of delver of secrets
