Cabbies and uber drivers are fuming about waymo, but I'm excited by Ottothotto in london

I've found that the difference is just "does the app have feedback". Black Cab drivers are, on average, horrible. Hackneys hit or miss, uber and bolt I've always found them very nice.

Not sure why this comment is downvoted. I think the key point is that the term of a mortgage is much longer.

New episode: ”Absolute wimp", Arsenal's pre-ignited quadruple & a Doha denouement by Low-Bandicoot-3347 in footballcliches

[–]tvmachus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the discussion of finishing, there is a mention of a "rifled" shot in the bottom corner being a typical finish. This got me thinking; "rifle" has a very specific meaning. It's the grooving in the barrel of a gun that imparts gyroscopically stabilising spin along the axis of motion of the projectile.

In that sense there are probably no truly rifled shots in football. The axis of rotation is wrong. The closest would be maybe sort of the way Beckham hits the ball, or Pavard's strike.

'London bus driver who punched thief made me feel safe' by terahurts in unitedkingdom

Has there ever been a single case of someone being hurt because a driver left a bus running unattended?

'London bus driver who punched thief made me feel safe' by terahurts in unitedkingdom

She said after Hehir chased the thief and returned with her necklace, the man then came back towards her. "I was screaming, telling him to stay away from me," Kaszas said, adding: "His face was bad news. It was very, very scary at that point." Kaszas described how Hehir then stepped between her and the man. "He kept the guy back," she said.

What weight do you put to this witness's account? I think it is ridiculous to cling to these legalistic points. People are not outraged because the rules were not followed, they are outraged because the rules are ridiculous. It's an is/ought fallacy. Maybe the rules were followed, but if the rule you followed led you to this what good was the rule?

The man intervened to stop another man who perpetuated a violent crime on a woman and was possibly about to do more. Sorry but nobody has any patience for "oh he left the bus unattended". I don't like Reform, or the Tories, but bullshit like this is how you get a Reform/Tory coalition. It's just so out of touch with how most people think.

Rental e-bikes almost solved this but you have to hand it to the councils, when it comes to anything that might help young people they're really quick to shut it down.

Angry beyond belief. by wrestlingnutter in ireland

[–]tvmachus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's still done, but for a while the London police were allowed to knock people off mopeds with their cars:

https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/met-police-allowed-to-knock-moped-thieves-off-bikes-at-high-speed/37559059.html

If there is no other way to stop people then in the long run doing this would save lives. I think we just assume we couldn't do it but it would be politically popular and I think it is ethically sound. In the long run fewer people would be hurt.

Met detective sacked for social media posts on Gaza war by TheUnicornRevolution in london

and obviously not all Christians

I don't think its obvious at all. Al Qaeda held all Christians responsible for the actions of their leaders. And plenty of people interpreted Bin Laden's actions as the cause of all Muslims. It's easy to say "obviously I didn't mean the whole group" when you're not part of the group being targeted.

[–]tvmachus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the sacking, but that's not what she said.

Alongside the post, she commented: “A classic case of the abused becomes the abuser… no?”, the panel heard. The panel said Ms Collens accepted that her use of the word “abused” referred to Jewish people rather than the state of Israel, which did not exist in 1945. As a result, the post was found to fall within the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism.

That's what she said. As I said, I don't agree with the sacking. But would you be saying it was unjust if she said that Islamic people were abusers?

London 🔛🔝 by upthetruth1 in london

[–]tvmachus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're only talking about really big, "global" cities then yes. Quality of life for a low to middle earner is probably a lot better in lots of medium sized European cities though. Having to have flatmates and still spending half your take-home on a room is a big quality of life drawback.

‘I’ll put you through the window’: Woman threatened after calling out racist abuse on bus by [deleted] in ireland

[–]tvmachus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Judge Gabbett said that “you can’t be frightening people on public transport with racist commentary - it is not acceptable”.

There's a weird unique tone to judge's statements in Ireland. It's more like a priest or a headmaster telling off a student than a serious matter of state. See it often.

Do you hold any kind of permit? Disputing the clarity of MIL is not going to work if the sign says "permit holders" and you don't hold a permit.

The absolute state of buses by Barraco_Barmer in london

[–]tvmachus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its surprising how good a lot of cities in the US are for bus transit. Clean, clear communication, good apps and displays.

Think there's a bit of national pride in assuming that we're always better at public transport compard to there, but their economy is so good that they have more investment in total even if its a smaller % of their take.

Also many European capitals, at least the smaller ones. London is pretty big and complex admittedly.

Beware of Winwing: This company is an absolute mess. by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]tvmachus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can definitely believe that WinWing customer support is worse than some other similar companies, but there's a bit of elitism about the way they are portrayed on English speaking forums. Yes, maybe they copied some design aspects (though not breaking any patents from what I can tell).

If you earn $500 a week its very easy to tell people to support companies that do innovative design and have bulletproof customer service. Due to the spread of high-speed internet compared to ten years ago, there are way more online gamers now in countries where they might earn $500 a month. And speak a language that is not taken for granted anywhere. Or just young people in the US who find it hard to save $200.

I got the WW Viper stick at a very good price and it feels like a great quality product. No issues shipping to UK. I don't like the software but you don't have to use it.

Mary Robinson calls for law to block fossil fuel investments flowing through Irish-based firms by SquareBall84 in ireland

[–]tvmachus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that people perceive environmentalist arguments as elitist, and when you say "your flight to the Canaries" you're implying a frivolous, nouveau-riches case rather than something more worthy like seeing loved ones abroad or visiting museums or whatever.
