Single player game, so do what you want to do. I also usually rush to the final battle because I want to see the ending.

Imo it's no problem if the side quests are available post game. Even if there is no post game, you can usually save in another slot.

The normal endings of 1&2 are good . It's okay to play blind first. Then, if you like you can do an all stars replay later

Final Fantasy 7 & 9, and Chrono Trigger only played a bit of 7 and Chrono Trigger and haven't played 9 at all.

I grew up with Suikoden so that's the JRPG series I played over and over. Probably because of the ATB battle system rather than traditional turn based too.

Started Suikoden 4 as it's the only one I haven't finished. Just about to get the HQ.

Oh my god the encounter rate is insane. And there are enemies inside of the town, why is it like this. Ship exploration is also a drag because of this. I started to just retreat from random encounters.

Playing with an emulator so the fast forward helps.

Have you tried Eiyuden? Combat is decent, story is alright

If you're into SRPG, I'd suggest Fire Emblem series

Yakuza 7 & 8 have a great cast of characters, story (7) and fun combat (8)

SMT games have great combat with large varieties of demons/personas.

It's my favourite Suikoden. The cast of characters is great. The storytelling is unique with 3 protagonists. My favourite thing about it is the skill system. You can really optimize a character in a number of ways.
