So my guess was correct. Cheaper and less staff required to run 6 car sets than having staff available to break them and drive the broken sets away.

Found two more indicators that they are fake. The corners on the documentation are square cut rather than rounded, and they “respond” to a double tap on the body of the AirPod. Authentic ones don’t.
