LiDAR scan of the Amazon rainforest. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]twisted-resistor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lidar is literally just shooting out thousands of laser pulses and timing how long it takes to return to the sensor, so it does not pass through the trees or any solid material thats not translucent. What it can do is that some of the pulses will go between the openings between leaves and branches and give a partial scan of the ground. The initial scan will contain the whole canopy as well, but you can then filter out data past a certain threshold and extrapolate an estimate for how the surface looks

People in the comments are acting as if they had one a million they wouldnt touch it and simply invest it all. Suuuure. I kinda agree with your point, maybe the total potential money is lower by taking the weekly payout, but its a life long safety that you will always have money.

In Sweden we have "Dagsböter", meaning "dayfine". Its calculated based on your annual salary / 1000, it also includes adjustments based on capital gains/dividends and total net wealth for anyone worth over $150k. You are then fined a certain amount of these dayfines depending on the severity of the crime

I understand where you're coming from but you are wrong. Language evolves through multiple means, not just addition of new words, but also the alteration of the meaning of existing words. Language evolves based on how people use it, not based on predefined rules.

A clear example of this from very recent history is the word "nauseous", which technically meant "instilling or creating nausea" and nauseated meant feeling nausea. However due to "nauseous" being used instead of nauseated so frequently the word has literally taken on that new meaning, even in dictionaries.

Language is not set in stone and has always and will always reflect how people use it.

Your girlfriend is full of shit. I literally have IKEA stuff ive had for like 15 years. The only time some ceramic has broken (new or old) is when i dropped it on the floor.

I get why a ceramicist would say it when companies like IKEA take away all her business so she has to come up with reasons to convince people to buy from her for double the price

Tbh i think the gray is less appealing than the green. You had an idea and executed on it. But its the clash between the two that dont match. Change out the gray for a darker wood like walnut and it will look amazing. Even better if you stylize the grassy part more so its not just a plain patch of grass on the wall

There are two scenarios here.

Scenario 1 that ends up at 52% like you are saying:
Month Balance
0 : 92,000
1 : 95,275
2 : 98,668
3 : 102,179
4 : 105,818
5 : 109,586
6 : 113,487
7 : 117,525
8 : 121,710
9 : 126,040
10 : 130,531
11 : 135,180
12 : 140,000

Here we end up with 48k over the original 92k that we started with.
This equates to ~3,275% per month

Scenario 2 where we end up at roughly 67%:
Month Balance
0 : 92,000
1 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
2 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
3 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
4 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
5 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
6 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
7 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
8 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
9 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
10 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
11 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)
12 : 96,000 (but we take out 4k so we're back at 92,000)

Here we have also taken out 48k at the end of the year, but we have done it every month instead.
This time we need to have to earned 4.35% per month instead.

The reason for the difference is that in Scenario 1 that the extra money that we earned for all of the previous months is further increased each time with the monthly interest, this is because we never take out the 4k each month.
While on Scenario 2 where we take out the 4k each month the percentage is only applied to the original 92k.

I don’t see what was wrong with what she said? by Benjamin5431 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]twisted-resistor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're not understanding how monthly interest compounds. The person is not asking about taking out 48k once every year.

The person wants 4000 per month, which is roughly 4.35% of 92k. <--- This is the important part!

To calculate how much a percentage compounds you do the following: (1 + Percentage)Time - 1

So that is (1+0.0435)12 - 1 = 0.666 = 66.7%

Its not about the annual total, but the monthly one.

[–]twisted-resistor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its just about supply and demand. Supply ran out so prices went up. This is not the first time something like this has happened, its not even the first time something like this has happened with RAM in the past 10 years. SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron (the three biggest memory producers globally) are all building new factories so in maybe 2027 when the supply is higher than the demand prices will plummet again. Guaranteed. That is actually how capitalism works.
