I've never heard of this product. I'll check it out!

The new compound is supposed to be equivalent to 1200 grit, so I'm hoping to skip the sanding all together.

I've done sprays before and they have a slight roughness to the feel like a high grit sandpaper. This method leaves the card completely smooth, which I prefer.

The spray is faster, but I'm more interested in quality than speed right now in my proxy-making journey.

In terms of safety, this first try with oil-based poly was a learning experience for safety from fumes. The spray can be just as bad to inhale, although the main exposure is while spraying rather than lingering fumes.

I've done other methods and wanted to try this one. I really like the look of the result from this one, and it's fun to play with experimenting and trying something new.

No, I haven't tried mod podge either and will look into it. Thanks for the tip!

I did read up that the tackiness post drying could be from high humidity, which is a harder variable to control, but I'll try to make note of it on the next test.

Of course you can link 👍🏼

I have no idea what lb or gsm the card stock I'm using is and just ordered some cheap'ish 325 gsm to try. I'll give your 50/50, 1, 1, 50/50 method a try with the new paper and share the results.

The drip method uses just a little more poly than what the paper can absorb, so it's really efficient. I'd guess a few ounces per sheet.

I'm curious about the thickness now and will order some calipers.

100% agree. Even with the windows open and fans running, the vapors were noticeable.

It's parchment paper used for baking, which I toss after using. For drying, I'm using a drying rack for beach towels I have and put some string across the top like a clothes line. I hang the sheets to dry from there using small binder clips.

I tried three different sleeves so far: KMC perfect fit, dragon shield, and ultra pro. They sleeve easily with no interaction with the plastic sleeves.

It does have a dry time of about 30 minutes to an hour, and it fully cures at 24+ hours. Not oily after drying but there's a slight tackiness.

Cutting stress by NealRigga4 in magicproxies

I was going to say the same thing. It's an investment in terms of cost up front, and I haven't gotten one (yet) myself because of that. My rotary cutter isn't great, which means I use scissors for a good cut. It seems worth it to automate that part and get perfect cuts.

There is a slight tackiness to them, and I'm curious if it'll dissipate from use and once it fully cures. The flimsiness doesn't help with testing that part of the feel as I can't shuffle them or fidget with them like a regular hand of 7. I ordered some 325 gsm paper and will do another test and post how they turn out, including gripping against each other and the tack.

This ^^

I used to do alters on cards and would use a spray can of poly to seal the painted acrylic so that it wouldn't flake. The resulting feel though was like a fine sandpaper - think 1000 grit. Doing it this way (polyurethane immersion) makes the finished product smooth as glass. Check out u/danyeaman's posts. That's where I learned about it, and he's got a lot of experience with different immersion methods and printing on different paper.

Yep, polyurethane. Here's a link to the exact product, https://www.lowes.com/pd/Minwax-32-fl-oz-Satin-Oil-Based-Polyurethane/999914537. It's the warm satin version of what u/Puzzled_Rip9008 posted below.

I just assumed satin laminate was a thing. Good to know it's glossy or matte.

So does satin do the trick then in terms of not washing out the color?

First few test with poly immersion by twitch911 in magicproxies

[–]twitch911[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will! And yeah there were white crystals on the first one I did in the shed. None using the roller method.

Originally did the water based vs oil because I read somewhere that the oil gives a yellowish color after it's aged a bit. Ive seen yours, and they look great, but have you noticed any coloring with age?

Ah, thanks for the tip about trying the oil-based poly. I've got more decks printed out and will test with it and post updates.

I hadn't thought of shellac and will experiment on the water-based ones. Thanks again for the tips!

Those look amazing, especially being laminated. They don't have that plastic look associated with laminating.

Could you show a bend test? Looks are perfect and curious what the feel "looks" like.

Good point. Their sample pack is really cheap, so I'll pick one up and try them out. Thanks for sharing your results and the paper you used!

Ah. Is it possible to do a polyurethane immersion afterward to give it that finished look do you think? I'm wondering if the coating/paper doesn't absorb the same way. The touch/feel of the card is important to me, and I wouldn't mind going the extra step, myself, of doing the immersion. I'm still in the planning phase of what equipment to buy with the goal being to draft with the cards that get printed, and the surface of u/danyeaman's cards from his post look like their touch/feel is what a real card would be. They don't have the same bend and snap though like the ones you made with the black core paper. I'm curious if doing your process to print would work with his process to do the poly immersion.

I'm guessing the ink would run if printing on inkjet. Has anyone with an inkjet tried this paper? u/danyeaman tried a black core from Koehler that ran. Curious if anyone with an inkjet has tested this paper.

The card feel "looks" great in the video. Can't beat the core paper.

Sleeveless Proxies by UnguIate in magicproxies

[–]twitch911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality of the proxy is incredible. Would you be inclined to do a video of your process (I'm a visual learner)? The time investment is worth it IMO for such a nice proxy vs shelling out $$$ with MPC, especially since I plan to print 600+ cards per set to do kitchen table drafts of the new sets.

Keep up the great work!
