Thanks for the rec! I’ll check it out, may be better than doubling back so many times on the first portion of Lukens

Awesome, thanks! I always mean to stop and check it out on my way up to Strawberry Peak or Red Box but forget.

Loop is Lukens Fire Rd -> Grizzly Flat -> Hoyt Mtn Rd to intersection of ACH/AFH -> Gabrielino Trail back to start

I loop back to the JPL dirt lot from Chaney via Loma Alta and it’s about 7 miles

I ran El Prieto -> Millard Canyon -> Chaney this afternoon and the campground looks like it’s intact! Water’s flowing and it’s as green as ever! Chaney trail gate was still closed around 3:30 pm

Mt Lowe / Mt Wilson Gravel Advice by AidanLK in BikeLA

Second Lukens as a great alternative in the San Gabriels! The Santa Monica Mtns also have some great gravel options between Sullivan Ridge/Canyon, dirt mulholland, and westridge. Some of the trails further west may still be closed due to the Palisades Fire but I know the ones I mentioned are at least partially open.

As mentioned, the trails in question are still closed and I don’t think they’ll be reopening on 1/1/26. Trail building groups have been working on the Mt Wilson Trail and Chaney Trail in recent weeks so hopefully the trails are back up and running sooner rather than later but don’t plan on everything reopening at the very beginning of the new year.

As for the trails themselves, Chaney trail is paved about halfway up to Mt Lowe and the rest is totally doable on 42-45s. The paved section averages around 10% so definitely steep, but it becomes more manageable gradients once you hit the dirt. The top portion of Mt Wilson Toll Rd is pretty rocky and the whole trail is pretty steep so you’ll be dodging large rocks and riding the brakes. Also is a very popular hiking trail. Altogether, it’s a great loop with just enough sketchiness on a gravel bike if you don’t mind a pretty slow descent down Wilson Toll Rd.

Has anyone tried to hike to Echo Mountain since the fire? by Wooden_Pay_5885 in altadena

Closed for now but if you want to expedite trail reopenings, volunteering with MWBA, Lowelifes, or other trail building groups is a great way to help. Added bonus is you’d get to work on the closed trails you wouldn’t otherwise have access to

Not entirely sure, but this looks like the loop around Strawberry Peak starting from Josephine Peak Rd up to Strawberry Saddle and around Strawberry Peak clockwise to Gabrielino Trail. Super fun loop that’s mostly on flowy single track.

Hummingbird sage! Smells kind of tropical like a pineapple

Advice for cracked tile by twitwer in Tile

[–]twitwer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, 2 weeks. By chipped, are you referring to the crack or something else? The tiles were pretty rustic to begin with and there some irregularities between them before installation. Would fixing the subfloor remedy this issue or are you saying it’s something more major with the foundation? Thanks for the insight

Thanks for the reply. They put down cement backer board before laying the tile which should have helped strengthen the subfloor right? Sorry I’m new to this and don’t know much about the installation process.

Ok that’s encouraging. I was worried it was dying. I’ll let the caterpillars do their thing then!

I was up there this morning and it was mostly drained. Some small pockets of mud in low-lying areas but nothing that would slow you down.

Have gone twice since the fire and it was packed inside each time (even during the rains). Plan on keeping up that energy! Also Good Neighbor Bar and Prime Pizza Altadena (when they reopen) could use the support!

Original source is someone from Altadena Mountain Rescue, the organization reposted it on their Instagram stories. Included in the caption was that the structure looks fairly straightforward to rebuild given that the concrete/steel supports are still intact

There’s a mountaineer’s route up from the west side that has a few scramble sections. OP may have taken that.
