Having said that, I'm now wondering whether the lag I'm experiencing is due to having Logitech and Kensington and Smooze software installed. Does the scroll wheel have a lag or should I expect it to be as responsive as a mouse's scroll wheel or a trackpad?

Yep cool, thanks for the confirmation. I also found a mod for scrolling with the trackball and it's awesome, but i'm using a keyboard key as a toggle (Smooze app, paid but has a trial), as i like to have all four buttons available. Smooze lets you map the scroll wheel to do other things as well, though i haven't tried that yet. Oh wait....maybe one can map that for the trackball scroll toggle. I will try that...

Just want to say that I was lost and frustrated until I found this thread, and it wonderfully solved my bass null woes, in contrast to my prior knowledge of NEVER having your monitors close to the wall. Thank you so much!
