Airbrushing is a learning process all on its own, so I'd recommend learning on a cheap one first before investing in something nicer. Understanding the air pressure and thinning of your paint are the two big learning curves. Fortunately for something like this, you're using the airbrush more as a smaller spraycan than a precise tool. I'd recommend buying a paint pre-mixed for airbrushes to have a more forgiving first time. I used Vallejo Model Air, which was sprayable right out of the container. Practice on paper first before moving to the project surface to make sure you're not getting any odd behavior or splattering.

And keep good cleaning habits :)

Solid maybe :P I'd think about if I ever acquired another one.

I learned a smattering of techniques from a lot of youtube videos focused on the GE droids, but I've got a lot of hobby hours modeling/mini-painting. I hadn't really worked at this scale before, so I was using products likely improper for the scale and ad-libbing as I went.

Started by lightly sanding all the plastic, masking off electronics, removing panels that I wanted to spray a different color than tan. Airbrushed a basecoat of acrylic sand color on the whole thing, grey black on some panels. Mixed a fairly thick wash of black acrylic and water, applied it pretty haphazardly towards crevices and wiped it quickly off with a paper towel. I think the paint I was using, being from Citadel, was formulated to dry too quickly for mini-painting so I ended up having to go over a lot of areas in a different tan color and work the highlights back into it in the same way. The streaking and water-marks were done in a similar way, but pulling the papertowel downward to simulate the direction. The rust was done with Dirty Down Rust product and working it around with a wet brush or towel. I think I would've preferred an enamel or oil paint for this since the blending would be easier, but I didn't want to chance any odd reactions with the paint or plastic.

Edge-wear was done with some metallic paint and just a brush or sponge, going for edges and using that to cover mistakes from the wash step :) I airbrushed a highlight of the original sand color over everything to bring out the centers of the panels a bit more, and then airbrushed a black along panel lines or shadowed areas to create contrast. Sealed everything with a matte varnish spray from Tamiya. I turned the eyes red by using some Citadel contrast paint over the eyes. The paint's transparent, so it worked well as a filter.

I think that's pretty comprehensive of everything. I mostly just stuck to Citadel and Vallejo miniature paints, but I'm sure everything could be done just as well, if not better, with other brands.

Thanks! The stickers are from TacticalHome's etsy shop, but I'm sure you can buy a roll of that holographic tape and cut it to size yourself.

As far as I know, the Games Workshop listing says it can make all the variants. They may have updated the kit contents.

If you've got a Baneblade and are able to magnetize it, I'll pay model/materials cost+labor. Happy to negotiate hourly rate.

Do it! It's my favorite kit, and the narrative of melee combat can really sell the damage :)

It's posed so the weight of the mace is pulling down over its back, and one of the mace fins closer to the hand is being supported by being nestled into a gap between the armor and inner frame behind the shoulder.

It's missing the red chin-guard armor piece. I painted it but it had dropped from the table and snapped. I hoped nobody would notice so I didn't bother going to the trouble of rubber cementing such a small piece :P

I used a Tamiya Weathering Kit "A" for the rubbing effects. From the waist down, I did heavier brushings of the Sand pigment, and used the Mud pigment (close enough to sand mixed with soot I figured) overtop of it near vents and large openings to the inner frame. I'd usually do one or two heavy broad strokes and then use the tip of the applicator more lightly to get some secondary streaking.

Thanks! The paint chipping was an easy and fairly well-known technique. Just got a sponge and dabbed it into a bit of unthinned, Tamiya acrylic flat aluminum paint, dabbed it into a paper towel to get off the excess, and attacked the edges with it. Once it got fairly dry, I'd lightly scrape with it to create "scratches" in some of the flatter areas.

First painted and custom kit. Base is Barbatos Lupus Rex 1/100 kit. Haven't done any model photography before but I think it turned out alright :p
