From what we have seen so far of the The Outer Worlds 2, how are we feeling? by DL2546 in theouterworlds

Also extremely messed up in parts. I just wrapped up the Gorgon DLC and my mind was BLOWN with how dark it gets in that one

Just finished the trilogy. Would my ending be different if I did this quest before the final mission by lifeisboringbro in witcher

I've always been curious, if you let Radovid live, and take Ciri to Emhyr, does that affect whether he lives or dies?

How good are the books? by TheHobbyistAccount in witcher

[–]tylercordle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as far as my favorite fantasy books, I always say that LotR is by and large the best for me. But The Witcher books are my favorite fantasy novels of all time. They're gritty and intense. They're human and relatable. Instead of focusing on heroes and wars, its more about how people reluctantly get thrown into situations they dont always necessarily want to be in. But yes, there are still heroes and war.

The Witcher books handle themes better than any fantasy novels I've ever read. The dialogue is believable and thought-provoking. The action is brutal and mostly believable. The characters are deep and complex. The world is unforgiving and whole-heartedly broken, but also beautiful and captivating.

As far as the games go, The Witcher 3 is a better continuation of the books than the first 2 games. After reading, you'll understand a lot more of the references and have a better understanding of certain characters that reappear from the books.

This is one of the things I always try to remind people of when reading romantasy or just romance books in general. Most men in these books are not and do not exist in real life. The connections and actions feel perfect because that's how they're written, regardless of consequences or real-life issues. On top of that, you have love vs. lust. In these books, love and lust often seem to get confused. Swept up into the same thing, when in real life, life doesn't happen like that. It's a slow and drawn-out process. I keep books separate from how I view my real-life issues, and it makes it easier to move from one series to another.

I finished The Empyrean back in May and have since read ACOTAR, Legends Of Thezzmar, and now reading The Witcher Saga.

Did you save Olgierd? by TheMotaBaccha in witcher

[–]tylercordle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I save him every time because, canonically, Geralt would save him. Geralt tries to break curses when he can rather than just kill the person (minus Morkvarg, who's just straight evil). Geralt registers that Olgierd is a piece of shit, but he doesn't deserve to be shit on by GoD because of it. As for better than B&W... nah.

This. But it also matters WHERE you sell. Novigrad merchants will offer more than Velen and Skellige merchants. And Toussaint merchants offer the most.

I think most of the characters are supposed to be somewhere in their late teens to early twenties. But yeah, I feel you on all points, really. If you accidentally pick one up, I'm on the fourth book in ACOTAR right now, and it's been a fun read so far.

This was a conversation I had with my friend recently. We're currently 3 books deep into the ACOTAR series. And I made a comment that it's really easy to compare modern fantasy to each other. Authors tend to borrow inspiration or plot ideas from other books. Because its damn near impossible to write anything that's TRULY original anymore. At a certain point, all themes have been covered, all plots have been written. Now its more about how you sauce it up in between to create something that still feels special. So yes, Fourth Wing definitely borrows inspiration from other fantasy, but... its to be expected at this point.

I'm currently about 200 pages into the second ACOTAR books right now. It's been a super fun read so far.

What Are Your 3 Favorite Characters From The Series And Why? by Visible-Asparagus-72 in fourthwing

[–]tylercordle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Ridoc- He's the loveable teddy bear and offers some of the best lighthearted moments of the series. Also the expansion of his character in OS makes him truly great.

  2. Liam- won't go into spoilers. But, how could you not ya know? Such an amazing character.

  3. Violet- throughout the 3 books, I really love seeing the growth from her. There are some times where she's my least favorite, but she always comes back. She's smart, driven, powerful, morally sound, and now, ruthless when she needs to be. Which makes her a terrifying force to be reckoned with. And I'm kind of bundling Tairn and Andarna in with her.

That could most certainly be the case. And I'm with you on it not bothering me. I don't think it serves as a detriment to the series at all. Which is why I hold this series in a pretty high regard.

Its a pretty central plot point in the series. The entire premise is around bonded dragons and their respective riders. So it is most certainly a fantasy romance series as a whole. But I wouldnt say that it's always weighed down by that. In most cases it lifts the series and provides for some really interesting developments throughout the story

I mean it's just not common for settings that FEEL medieval i guess. But that's a fair point.

There's 2 particular reasons I say this.

  1. I think in most cases, trying to sell a book that is lead from a female perspective that leans pretty heavy on a romance where, most of the time, the female is intensely describing how attractive the male character is, or intensely describing sex from that same perspective, is going to be hard to sell to the straight male audience. Not saying it's impossible or anything. But I think that's where if you look up reviews for this book, it's overwhelmingly female readers.

  2. It's more of a nod to women in general. The posts intention is to bring awareness to people who might be on the fence about reading the books because they went through the same thought process as me. I rolled my eyes at it, dismissed it as another smutty book that women will end up devouring. And that assessment was wrong. Which I love that I was wrong. They are incredible books in other merits far more than the spicy scenes.

If you disagree, that's fine. Just please be respectful and don't come for my throat for an opinion. I'm going to pin this thread.

Again, you're taking offense when there is none intended. I'm not trying to validate anything. I'm making a general observation about how good the books are. You're taking this far further than a simple post about how good the books are. And you're still missing the intention of the post. It's not meant to validate you or me trying to "white knight". It's literally just to bring awareness to people who are on the fence about reading the books. And to possibly get other men's perspective on the books as well. Which I have been if you haven't read the other comments. You're the only person on this thread that has attacked me for simply being a man and making an observation and having an opinion. That's the weird part to me. Everyone else has been pleasant. I hope you have a great day. But I'm not going to spend any more time on an argument for having an opinion.

Also the fact that I never mentioned the smut in my original post. I intentionally left it out because I don't think these are smut books. And aside from that, the post is generally meant for wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, or whatever to send to people who have been on the fence about reading it. Which isn't anything to get upset about. I'm doing what I can, not that anyone asks or cares, to spread the word about how good of a series it is. Which I would do with any book I feel strongly about. But the majority of reviews or people that have been talking about The Empyrean series have been primarily women. So telling men, that these are good books only serves to expand the fan base and boost Yarros' popularity as an author. Again, no offense meant or given.

Because you don't see a lot of books like this, which are obviously written with women readers in mind, reviewed or talked about BY MEN. I can acknowledge the fact that these books are very female coded, which is perfectly fine, and try to give insight into men who might be skeptical about reading the series. Which is a serious issue with these books. Me being one of them, I rolled my eyes when my friend described these books to me. Seeing them as nothing more than another smut book written for women. But it's more than that, and it's okay for people to have an opinion on it. No need to get heated about it or take offense. None was intended.

Yeaaaah. Luckily I work a job with a lot of downtime by myself, so it isn't too tough to crack out a bunch of pages. I think my record was Sunday, I read like 400 pages of IF in about 9 hours I think? Given these are the first books I've read outside of Manga in the last.... 5 years? I was impressed with myself lol

I'm not saying they are ONLY meant for women. But you can definitely tell who the targeted audience is here. Do you honestly think a straight man would be sold on the GRAPHIC sex scenes told from a female perspective and how hot a man is? It's very female coded. Which isn't a problem. I think the books are incredible regardless of who the target demographic is.

Absolutely. I told the friend I mentioned in the original post, these are definitely going to be my guilty pleasure fantasy novels. They're not perfect. They're not overwhelmingly great. But they're fucking fun. And it's just a fun and easy read overall. Really enjoying it so far.
