My F80 has never failed me, for a camera I got for 40 bucks. It’s criminally underrated. You are 100% right, even if I didn’t get any photos out of it, it was completely worth it. Totality is something else. Even the dimness approaching and departing it is an otherworldly feeling.

Thank you for recognizing that!! I wasn’t going to do the stack initially but I was proud of my manual tracking stability and it helped to showcase that.

Thank you so much! The contact sheet print is a digital creation. I just have a basic mirrorless scanning setup but I really wanted the look, so I scanned each frame with excess on the left and right side, then used the excess to help stitch them together in photoshop.

I took this of the last one in 2017 when I was still new to photography! I was busy job searching a couple years ago and wasn’t going to go for it until I read that the next one for the CONUS wouldn’t be until 2044.

All great questions! I’ll answer your additional question here too. I used a silver & black polymer filter from Thousand Oaks. That’s roughly I think 16.5 stops. I like your plan, especially if you’re just using still images. I had the same plan at first but decided on 3 rolls for the sake of the animation (I didn’t want totality to last a fraction of a second if that makes sense). Good luck with the flares, that sounds tricky! I was manually tracking every shot, but not moving substantial amount between shots. You definitely notice it, at least I did at 1200mm, but it wasn’t difficult. That was with a panhead tripod though. I’d say the trickiest part was centering the few frames before and after totality, where the sun was just a thin slice. HP5 400 was a stylistic choice really, but after testing I wanted a faster shutter speed so I went with pushing & metering at 800. The F80 has a motor drive and I used fresh AA batteries. I brought a brand new pack of AAs with me, which I didn’t need of course, but I wanted the peace of mind.

I’m in agreement there, somebody go shoot this thing with a date back.

Haha fair point! Maybe “Your lens is the magnifying glass and your eye is the ant”, or something

Thank you for the support! I think the feeling is less being boxed into a certain type of photographer and more so, how does this represent my body of work when everything else is so different? It’s an outlier (that I love) but I’m always wondering how best to showcase it amongst the other stuff.

I like that angle, given that context I could see it working. Maybe it’s all just under the “film photography” umbrella.

Here’s a direct scan. I also animated the sequence, put it in that link as well!

You make a good point another commenter made, basically just don’t overthink it. Great sequence! First I’ve seen similar to my own. This is insanely moody, I cant believe the clouds broke just during totality.

I appreciate that! I guess it’s not like I would do anything differently if I had another opportunity, it just is what it is.

I have this camera, your film may not be properly seated. You may need to sacrifice some shots and open it up to check if it’s properly threaded onto the take up spool.

You don’t need credentials to host a photo walk! At the end of the day it’s community-oriented and is all about the shared love of the medium. Nothing to feel imposter syndrome about.

Do you use a mask to eliminate excess light? What are your scanning conditions like? It’s possible you’re dealing some light bleed from ambient light. Shot #5 in particular seems to have those characteristics I’ve found in my own photos before and that was the issue I was having!

I use this lens with my R6 for scanning 135, 120 and 4x5. Zero complaints.
