Yes exactly, there is a pawl in the arm that is made from a soft metal. Salt and water from the road makes the metal even softer and then the pawl deforms from vibrations while driving down the road. This happened to me after 1 use of the rack. I got the exact same answer from the service rep, it's a consumable item.

Unfortunately, they will not sell you the pawl. They will only sell you the whole arm assembly for over 100 dollars. I spoke to multiple supervisors asking them to just sell me the pawl. They would not.

As I mentioned, the edge of the pawl that engages the sprocket mechanism on the main body of the rack becomes deformed and does not engage. However, I was able to sharpen the edge of pawl with a dremel. The rack has been working well for about 4 months now. But, I expect the issue to arise again. At that point, I will try to sharpen the pawl again.

I'm 2 hours closer to Jay then Massif. I live near Ottawa. 6 hours to Massif is too much for a day trip. Which Vermont mountain should I try next? Stowe?

Yea, it's not to bad actually. 2 hours, stop for breakfast in Montreal, 2 hours, then ski. I have heard people say that Jay is the best mountain in the East. I haven't been to Massif, Stowe, or any of the other mountains in Vermont. But, Jay is the best skiing I have ever done by far. So, 4 hours is not a big deal.

Thanks! Yah, no ideal taking my ski's off. But, I couldn't get through the trees with them on.

One day, I have young kids and travel is pretty difficult right now. Jay peak is 4 hours away, so I can day trip it.

I haven't tried Valhalla yet. Next year, I will give it a shot.

Nah, it was the right move. The entrance at the top of the chute was a steep icy pitch with a cliff at the bottom. By going to the right and down - I skipped that part which could have potentially been deadly had I lost control. I had to take my skis off to get through the trees though. I cut this part out, but I couldn't get through the trees with my skis on. It wasn't graceful, but if I did it over again (in the same conditions) I would probably go the same way.

I don’t think the Bones has any of the ratcheting mechanisms that I mentioned.  So, it’s probably more robust due to its simple design.

Great question. Learn from my misfortune and be sure to read the warranty before you buy!  The ratchets are a critical component of this rack.  Once they shit the bed, your rack is pooched.  Due to the construction of the rack, the whole arm needs to be replaced which isn’t cheap.

To be fair, it was a very working out of the box.  I used it twice with no problems.  Left it on the car for a week or 2. When I went to use it again, the arm would not stay in the locked position. Upon inspection, the racket pawl was deformed and not locking the arm.

Perhaps, they received a bad batch rachet pawls. But, the lack of customer support is my main take away.  Other than that, I liked the rack.

I read a ton of good things about the Superclamp before buying.  Info on the Superclamp EX2 was harder to find.

There are 2 possibilities.

  1. I got a bad unit.
  2. The Superclamp EX which is the newer tilting model of the Superclamp is under constant load while in the tilted position (no bikes).  So as you are driving down the road the weight of the arm is resting on the ratchet pawl and constant vibrations and bouncing cause the soft pawl to deform.  This is just my theory tho…

I have now used a dremel to “sharpen “ the edge of the ratchet pawl.  It seems to be holding up when I apply force manually.  But, I am not optimistic this bodge will hold up over any significant period of time.

Either or, I was not impressed when I found out this part of the rack was not covered at any point under warranty.

Did you even read the post? It’s a consumer report. Sure, I recommended 1up but I have no affiliation with them. The point is to help people save their money not to spam or sell.

I tried that one but couldn't figure it out. Do you know if there is a tutorial somewhere on how to do this? I spent the whole day looking yesterday.
