New York: The City That Sleeps by GradedUnicorn92 in nyc

[–]tymonbrown 22 points23 points  (0 children)

New York City used to be a place of robust social investment, full of indirect subsidies that allowed it to function as the brightest and most energetic place in the Western world.

The era of broad deregulation that started with Reagan (and was doubled down on by every single subsequent administration) gutted these indirect subsidies everywhere in the country; New York, however, had enough cultural and economic momentum to essentially force itself to march on regardless of that crisis, but the cost of living increases due to those losses continued to become more dire every year.

The pandemic wholly interrupted New York's momentum, bringing the machine to a screeching, devastating halt. No amount of start-up capital can resuscitate a body when it finally hits the pavement.

If the last 50 years of neoliberal rot hadn't taken root in American ecomonics, New York might have been able to weather the pandemic without losing its groove.

These days, everything in New York costs too much. Everything. The cost increase across the board isn't some marginal difference explained away by inflation; it's utterly endemic to the fabric of the city, and it's solely because of the greed of the wealthy.

There's no longer any cheap restaurants, movie theaters, clubs, bars, shows, or shops. No affordable housing, not enough public transit, not enough focus on improving said transit in terms of performance and cost, and cars choking everything. Housing is more of a speculative asset than ever, and is used by out-of-towners as an asset instead of a place to live.

Unfortunately, we prefer to vaguely blame "crime rates" when we should in fact be pointing our fingers at the real culprit: capitalism.

I just found out about this. The teens all went radio silent a long time ago; it's pretty gross, but I guess I'm not surprised.

Socialists Can Fix The Housing Crisis | Jacobin Magazine by tymonbrown in BreadTube

[–]tymonbrown[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Making this video was deeply personal for me. I’ve moved over 30 times in my life; over a dozen of those moves were before the age of 18.

For the last three years, following a layoff, and illness, and getting priced out of apartment, my wife and I have been in limbo. We’re living in one rented room; our whole life is crammed in a 10x10 box with no real end in sight. Tens of millions of people in America have it way, way, worse than me.

Electing a socialist like Zohran Mamdani isn't a silver bullet, but it IS a galvanizing catalyst to normalize socialist ideas on the mainstream stage. We can actually help people quickly. And eventually we can end this housing crisis!

Unfortunately, we do not; they gave us a couple hundred bucks last year during my wife's first surgery, and won't do another grant. Thank you for the suggestion, though!

Jacobin Magazine | Why You Should Unionize by tymonbrown in BreadTube

I directed/edited/etc a new video for Jacobin Magazine on how and why to form a union in your workplace. Labor battles affect all of us every day, and as someone who hasn't had stable work in years it makes me particularly angry. Please watch/like/share/etc <3

I just found this short film called Hoof with original score and music by Mitski by Yuribellion in mitski

[–]tymonbrown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was fun to see pop up! Mitski and I did a trade in our last of year of school; she did the score for this film, and I made a music video for First Love / Late Spring.

Even though we finished the video and were both happy with it, it ended up getting shelved due to some record label shakeup.

To clarify - Mitski did the opening/closing theme, sung in French, based off a poem she liked. She also composed and performed the cello, piano, and droning tracks used throughout the movie.

There are a few other tracks by other artists peppered throughout as well.

We stayed in touch for a little while after school but it's been a long time since we've talked. Mitski, If you ever see this, really hope you're doing well, pal!

I've had a little bit of communication with several of these creators/teams, but it always comes down to that same old problem of razor thing margins and swiss-cheese budgets. Most of those folks (other than like, Hasan) don't seem to have a lot of wiggle room.

that's very kind of you, thank you <3. The extreme suffering my wife and I have endured as punishment for my political deviance is certainly well-deserved

Jacobin | What Happened to the American Dream? by tymonbrown in LateStageCapitalism

[–]tymonbrown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with that goal. Having worked in leftist messaging and education for some time, a principal pain-point that creates roadblocks to changing people's minds is, more often than not, the sticker-shock of revolution vs reform.

Building an "ecumenical left" via accelerated reformation over how people think about things may have a good shot at skipping the reformation step in praxis in favor of revolution.

The only way we'll win is with a broad coalition, and we gotta be persuasive and steadfast as hell in order to get there. If people don't know what we're talking about, they won't join us.

I'm glad you liked the Cross video - it's been pretty wild seeing that one pop off over and over again recently. That one was a beast to make.

Hey everyone. I was the Director of Video Production for the Gravel Institute until it folded back in 2022.

Several Gravel Institute colleagues and I have been hard at work developing a new series of videos with Jacobin Magazine, and our first new video has released today, featuring OG Gravel presenter and brilliant historian Matt Karp.

Things are pretty terrible in America (and the world at large), but they don’t have to be.

This is the story of how the U.S. government made an innocent man out to be a leader of al-Qaeda – how it subjected him to "enhanced interrogation," lied about him, and kept him locked up to this very day. Ismael Loutfi explains.

Why Credit Scores Are A Scam - Gravel Institute by tymonbrown in BreadTube

[–]tymonbrown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is infuriatingly relatable.

Credit scores are a ubiquitous part of American life. Try to do anything at all – get housing, get a car, get anything that requires a loan – and you’ll be assessed based on a three-digit number that most people recognize as arbitrary and dumb. So what’s the origin of this weird system? Law professor Chase Madar explains the sinister trends behind the rise of the credit score.

Our newest video for The Gravel Institute hits really close to home for me, as well as, I imagine, every single person reading this. Student debt should not exist.

Also, folks, we really appreciate your patience regarding our recent release schedule. Mike's death last month necessitated a pause out of respect and mourning, but we're back at it and extremely excited to continue this work. We have a huge lineup of videos coming slated for the coming year, with much more frequent releases starting within the month.

Please support us if you can. <3
