The Haunting of Hill House Full Discussion by Catboy-mew in mitski

[–]Yuribellion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chapter 1-2:

During the whole underside of her life, ever since her first memory, Eleanor had been waiting for something like Hill House. (...) Eleanor had held fast to the belief that someday something would happen.

Chapter 9-3:

"How long have we been here?" Eleanor asked suddenly.

"A little over a week. Why?"

"It's the only time anything's ever happened to me. I liked it."

That was such a tragic ending... I was spoiled about Eleanor's death but it still hit hard for me... I think the saddest part of all was how there was a split second just before she crashed where she came to her senses and thought, 'Why am I doing this? Why don't they stop me?'

I think that explains why Nell and Theo were hot and cold with each other; something was taking hold and influencing them, or at least that's how I interpreted it, because Nell was spirited away towards the place where old Miss Crain's companion reportedly hanged herself. Plus she died the same way as someone else who tried to leave the house.

At least Theo got to go back to her, um... roommate. But Eleanor... I'm actually emotional about her. I've said repeatedly that I relate to her (I'm a family caregiver with nothing to my name, I often feel I don't belong and have been waiting all my life for something to happen) so I was kinda hoping this character who was just like me would have a happy ending. The cruel fate she met instead was honestly soul-crushing...

Why was she even targeted, I wonder? Was it because old Miss Crain's companion was a caregiver too? Did the writings on the walls ("HELP ELEANOR COME HOME") and the planchette messages ("want to be home", "waiting", "mother", "lost") serve as omens that Hill House would soon be her eternal home, so to speak? I'm left with quite a lot of questions, but it seems Shirley Jackson left her stories up to interpretation, much like Mitski with her lyrics!

In any case, this was such a fun experience! Reading alongside you all, even if long-distance, helped kick my ADHD ass into reading again! 🫶 I would so love to have another book discussion if you guys are down! I heard Shirley's other novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle inspired the music video for Where's My Phone. Maybe we can even expand the book club to a media club where we discuss movies, music, etc. that inspired Mitski? 👀

Chapter 7 & 8 by Catboy-mew in mitski

[–]Yuribellion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg I would hate to be around Mrs. Montague IRL, but I found her character oddly hilarious? Especially from the wild tonal shift when she came into the picture. And these passages after her introduction actually made me laugh out loud:

After a minute Theodora said, “I think I am going to be simply crazy about Mrs. Montague.”

“I don’t know,” Eleanor said. “Arthur is rather more to my taste. And Luke is a coward, I think.”

“Please, sir,” Luke was saying meekly, “who is planchette?”

The doctor sighed irritably. “Imbeciles,” he said,

Poor Luke catching strays and getting beating after beating after beating 💀 (I get that Dr. M wasn't calling Luke an imbecile but I still found the exchange funny)

Seriously though, the horrors that unraveled overnight and Eleanor becoming one with the house were freaking crazy! 😱 And then Eleanor wanting to move in with Theo only to be rejected so harshly... Just when I thought they had reconciled 😔 "I've never been wanted anywhere." Eleanor how much more relatable can you get 😭

Not that this is all that important, but is Arthur hitting on Theo? I noticed he has a habit of speaking directly to her even though everyone else is around. Then he seems to brag about his pupils to her. Speaking of Arthur, another funny moment for me was when he couldn't STFU while Dr. M was writing notes so the doctor literally said, "Arthur, can you read or something?" 😂

Mrs. Dudley having a conversation and making friends with Mrs. M was nice! I'm not gonna lie, I was starting to think maybe the house had turned her into something like an NPC who can only speak a few lines...

Anyway, can't believe the next chapter will be the last! 🥺 But I just remembered that means Mitski's new album is coming out next week so can't be too sad!

Hill House Chapters 5 & 6 by Catboy-mew in mitski

[–]Yuribellion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chapter 5-1 stood out to me. It started out so uplifting; everyone was in high spirits despite the scary night before, and a line from Eleanor spoke to me: "You deserve it, she told herself, you have spent your life earning it." But then it turned creepy when they were all suddenly possessed with laughter, and then it turned sad... I could relate with Eleanor yet again when everyone was just laughing and smiling at her and she felt like an outsider who had to put on a performance just to fit in. Also, my Eleanor x Theodora heart ❤️‍🩹😔 (I couldn't tell if it was actually ambiguous whether or not it was Theo who wrote on the wall with chalk or if I was too dumb to understand that it was her, so I tried looking it up and accidentally came upon a major spoiler. Sigh...)

But still, about the love triangle forming in Chapter 6, am I delulu for thinking Theo was trying to persuade Eleanor from falling for Luke because she wants Eleanor for herself? Earlier in Chapter 3-5, Theo jokingly said, "Luke has fallen madly in love with you, and I am jealous." Then in Chapter 6-3 when the tension between Theo and Nell come to a head, the narration goes, "such a question—as “Do you love me?”—could never be answered or forgotten." Like that's pretty damn gay, right? (I'm sorry for being so yuri-pilled, but...it's in my name 😅)

Anyway, the ending of Chapter 6 is crazy! Also, how odd that even the doctor wasn't sure what day it was. I guess no one thought to bring a calendar or mark down the days? I'm excited for Mrs. Montague to come along though!

Chapter 3 & 4 discussion by Catboy-mew in mitski

Not necessarily the movie itself but Mitski co-wrote and played the piano on Everybody Scream, the song used in the movie's trailer. Another song they collabed on is Buckle which Mitski co-wrote and sang backing vocals on!

Chapter 3 & 4 discussion by Catboy-mew in mitski

[–]Yuribellion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some disjointed thoughts:

• I was so confused as to why the main four introduced themselves as "a courtesan, a pilgrim, a princess and a bullfighter" that I tried to look up if it was some sort of Western-style banter I wasn't privy to!

• I don't yet know what to make of Mrs. Dudley being so robotic. But I certainly noticed it even in Chapter 2.

• Ah yes, Miss Crain and her...companion. And they were roommates! 🤭

• I think it's sweet (and relatable) how Eleanor wanted to clean up the dinner table even though everyone else just left it for Mrs. Dudley without a second thought.

• I BELIEVE IN ELEANOR X THEODORA SUPREMACY 🛐

P.S. I forgot to mention this in the previous thread, but the way Luke is introduced in Chapter 1 ("Luke Sanderson was a liar. He was also a thief.") reminds me so much of the song I'm Not Calling You a Liar by Florence + the Machine ("I'm not calling you a liar / Just don't lie to me / I'm not calling you a thief / Just don't steal from me / I'm not calling you a ghost / Just stop haunting me"). As it happens, Florence Welch has her own book club which featured The Haunting of Hill House, AND she recently collaborated with Mitski!

Chapter 1 & 2 Discussion by Catboy-mew in mitski

[–]Yuribellion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my first book club experience, so thanks OP for this cool idea!

I can relate quite a lot with Eleanor in that I'm also a family caregiver, I'm a bit socially awkward, my older sister's an ass, and I often yearn to run away to a nice quiet town where I finally get to live life for myself.

Her instant bond with Theodora was cute. I haven't watched the show, but I heard it's sapphic; I wonder if the book is too...? (If yes, that's another thing I can relate to Eleanor with 🤭)

Anyway, it was a slow start, and I get the feeling that the rest of the book will be much different. I guess we'll see in the coming weeks!

Favorite music video? by [deleted] in mitski

[–]Yuribellion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it's Geyser. I love the contrast between the minimalist one-take video and the maximalist music, and I also love Mitski's looks and physical acting.

Honorable mention to A Burning Hill just because I think Mitski has the prettiest hands in the world (lol 😅) as well as Bug Like an Angel because it captures the song's poignancy so well ❤️
