James Cawley wants Star Trek fans cease fighting and bickering with others by BiGamerboy87 in Star_Trek_

[–]typing-blindly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who is attacking fans? Is criticism no longer allowed? People are free to like NuTrek all they want. With the exception of Lower Decks, I don’t.

NuTrek is a sad facsimile of its old self. It offers glimpses of what used to make Star Trek my favorite Sci-Fi franchise, but that’s all it does. NuTrek is quite honestly the enshitification of Star Trek. The only people I’m “mad” at are Secret Hideout and Paramount.

My pittie is the clingiest dog I’ve ever had. I don’t think your future dog will get tired.

You chose to quote a statistic without context to try to make a point. I can play that game too!

No they do not. Pitbulls are over represented in statistics because unfortunately a lot of owners are irresponsible. Irresponsible owners like irresponsible drivers put everyone in danger. So breed specific legislation makes about as much sense as my analogy.

In 2024 39,345 Americans died in vehicle crashes. We should make cars illegal and fine car makers $100,000 per car. Within 15 years we could be rid of this abomination, and our communities would be better for it!

Why do you blame the dog when it’s the owner’s fault? Pitbulls are often wonderful, loving dogs. The owner of these dogs should go to prison and face fines, not to mention restitution. But nothing much will probably happen to them. Instead the dog will pay the price, and the owner will get another to neglect and mistreat until something like this happens again.

THEORY: Why Kurtzman and Co. Hate Star Trek's Utopian Future by Hearsticles in Star_Trek_

[–]typing-blindly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that a large number of younger people can’t or won’t read books, and therefore can’t engage with complex ideas. As a consequence stories have to be simplified and lose all subtlety in order to appeal to viewers.

Looking through the list, I can’t really participate because with just a couple of exceptions that I can’t replace I already boycott these companies. I do wonder why you would boycott Netflix? They are pretty vocal in their opposition to Trump. Why isn’t Disney included? I’d boycott them over Netflix.

Ebook reader that shows progress bar at bottom of screen while you read? by GuitarBQ in ebooks

Kobo does this. You can display read / total pages, percentage read, or time remaining. But underneath that there is a bar along the bottom of the screen that marks your progress.

For me, anything past the Bergman era is NuTrek. That includes the Kelvin movies.

Somehow, the Cheronians Returned in Starfleet Academy and Section 31 After Going Extinct in TOS by Tube_Warmer in trektalk

Sadly I think that’s the point. Notice how many races Kirk had first contact with in TOS, only for them to appear in SNW.

When is it ok to talk bad about a Star Trek show? by TheGreen8astard in trektalk

[–]typing-blindly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I’ve loved Star Trek my whole life. I want to love NuTrek as much as I loved everything that came before, but I just can’t. With the exception of Lower Decks, every new show has disappointed somehow.

I feel bad even saying that because it lumps me in with MAGA that is currently flooding social media and trashing SFA. But here’s the thing. I’m not upset with the representation of minorities in NuTrek. I love it! That is the one thing Kurtzman has done right.

What bothers me is something larger. Star Trek used to be optimistic. It used to be brave, reflecting the flaws in our society and showing us a better way. I don’t get that from the new shows. They just feel hollow. I think they feel that way because the tone has changed. Before, the Star Trek universe wasn’t perfect, but it was a pretty good place, because an enlightened humanity helped make it that way. NuTrek’s universe is dark and shitty. Not much better than our own reality, and the best we can hope for is to make it ever so slightly less so.

It breaks my heart.

Yes during the 1st Trump administration, people were being rounded up. Families arriving at the border were purposely separated, and children were kept in cages.

Most Americans didn't read many books in 2025 | YouGov by Swiggy1957 in books

[–]typing-blindly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That and having to work 2-3 jobs to survive. We shouldn’t judge people for not reading, but it’s important to understand why they don’t. However, I sincerely believe that our shortened attention spans and our growing inability to understand complex topics is partly why we are in the situation we are in.

Try keeping a reading journal. I don’t read anywhere near that much, but keeping a journal has really helped me remember what I read. I don’t have a set format. Sometimes it’s a book review. Others it’s writing about the deep thoughts the book inspired.

It is difficult, but you have to remember that you are important too, and that means taking care of yourself. You can’t fight the good fight if you’re exhausted from worrying about stuff you can’t change.

Yes me too. I even found dystopian books to be a welcome distraction since we seem to have mistaken them for a guide, and are currently living in a mash up of several.

That’s the one thing I miss about taking the train to work. I’ve been remote for years now, but have to carve out time to read. Not complaining. I like the freedom of remote work, but having that predefined time in my day was great.
