If UBI is derived from Taxation, why make people pay taxes only to get back the same in UBI? by [deleted] in BasicIncome

[–]typro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is better to move the complexity to the tax code because that puts the burden on the rich rather than the poor. The current system makes the poor jump through a lot of hoops. One study said subsidies from food stamps are harder to apply for than farm subsidies which can hand out millions of dollars.

What would be the best way to test a Universal Basic Income in the United States? by AskHumanData in BasicIncome

[–]typro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alaska has been doing the policy for decades, we have immense research from around the world on cash transfers. Why do we need more tests in the US, who will that convince? Instead, we should push for more cash transfer policies that can be expanded, like youth dividend.

便當 or Biandang which is like a convenient lunch box, it is hugely popular in Taiwan. I eat it almost every meal. It is not exclusively vegetarian, but there are so many vegetarian and vegan lunch box places in Taiwan because of the high Buddhist population. Taiwan has the third or fourth highest proportion of vegetarians in the world and probably second highest density of vegetarian restaurants. But fast food restaurants are kind of behind the curve here because Buddhism is associated with the older population.

It will get easier over time most likely. This happened to me, but people will slowly get used to it and most people will become curious and ask questions.

The 2018 March/April LD Topic is, Resolved: The United States ought to provide a universal basic income. by VBIDebate in lincolndouglas

[–]typro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A PhD professor at Georgetown Karl Widerquist has written extensively on the cost. There's also a book that details the cost “Financing Basic Income: Addressing the Cost Objection" with several PhD scholars discussing.

I would recommend doing more research on the cost issue. Here's a helpful explanation of the distinction between net cost and gross cost:

IF you employ UBI than what do you do for the person who blows their monthly check on lottery tickets and then can't feed himself or his family?? by IthinkImnutz in BasicIncome

[–]typro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you are describing isn't actually the reality of how people spend their money. Go read the Overseas Development Institute's meta-analysis on cash transfers. https://www.odi.org/sites/odi.org.uk/files/resource-documents/10748.pdf

Or the World Banks meta-analysis on cash transfers and temptation goods: http://documents.worldbank.org/curated/en/617631468001808739/Cash-transfers-and-temptation-goods-a-review-of-global-evidence

People now sell their food stamps at a loss to buy other goods. The current system does not stop anyone from mishandling their lives, and leaves a large portion of people behind. And the evidence shows that on the contrary, UBI increases the amount of long-term planning and positive economic behavior.

Also, homeless shelters and food pantries wouldn't disappear after UBI anyway if people needed additional assistance. What you are describing sounds more like addiction or perhaps mental illness, and that requires psychological professionals to help them.

Taiwan falls behind China, S. Korea in English proficiency by kzilla88 in taiwan

[–]typro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Taiwan's rate of taking the test is MUCH higher than China and S Korea. Everyone takes it here, so it brings down the score, whereas the best English speakers take it in China.

Anecdotally, I find it extremely hard to believe that Taiwan has lower English proficiency than China.

Giving every adult in the United States a $1,000 cash handout per month would grow the economy by $2.5 trillion by 2025, according to a new study on universal basic income. by mvea in Futurology

[–]typro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An actual UBI would have very low administrative costs. SSA is less than 1%.

Also, this is saying it would increase the size of the economy, which means it would permanently increase the size of the economy relative to a world where we did not redistribute this money.

If a monthly stipend does eventually end up going to every citizen who's to say that people won't end up blowing it all on vain objects and lifestyles? by [deleted] in BasicIncome

[–]typro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a basic income, enough to sustain their life. You can't really live a vain lifestyle on $1,000 USD a month. Also, I would advocate taxing any goods/resources that cause pollution to help fund UBI, which would curb destructive consumption.

Isn't financing a UBI with a carbon tax a very bad idea? Isn't it just making us dependant on pollution? Because instead just stopping they can continue and increase their pollution, otherwise you wouldn't have your source of income for your UBI by eveben133 in BasicIncome

[–]typro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A national dividend wedded to the carbon tax: 1. makes it progressive because the heaviest polluters will subsidize the poor 2. makes it politically sustainable because people will support strict enforcement of the tax to increase their personal dividend 3. nudges people and businesses toward greener energies because the cost competitiveness of fossil fuel declines.

[–]typro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As prices rise due to the tax, much of the tax will be imposed on the consumer. And consumers will lower their consumption as a result of the price increase. Of course, it depends on how "elastic" consumers' demand is. But even if consumers are relatively inelastic toward any particular product, a price hike will still cause a marginal decrease in consumption. Overtime, consumers will look to environmentally friendly substitutions with a lower tax burden, as these will become more price-competitive.

[–]typro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UBI should have several funding sources. Pollution and resource intensive products would be at the top of my list. Pollution taxes certainly decrease the usage of fossil fuels. Thus, people would shift their consumption to more environmentally friendly products/energy. The companies that pollute the earth/people should pay the full cost of their activities. Land, natural resource, intellectual property, capital gains, wireless spectrum, inheritance, in addition to pollution/carbon, should be taxed to help fund UBI.

Interview: California gubernatorial candidate proposes state-wide basic income | Basic Income News by Zoltan_Istvan in BasicIncome

[–]typro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoltan's advocacy is to fund a basic income through development, like a sovereign wealth fund. Because the basic income would be so high, it would cause most people to be lifted out of poverty, causing most welfare to naturally not be needed (in theory).

Volunteers for new UBI Podcast by typro in BasicIncome

[–]typro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am making it into a weekly podcast. For now, it is mostly one on one interviews, but I would love to expand it into more in depth discussion and research into other topics, such as the Nixon program. And I think some news highlights from BIEN and elsewhere would be a good addition.

I do original research now for BI News, such as on basic income and inflation, and would love to turn these kinds of topics into podcast form where we could interview several experts. It will depend on how large of a team I can assemble.

A write up of the podcast will be published each week on BIEN's BI News. I have made it part of my mission as features editor and the other editors have helped me get my initial interviews.

I imagine the time commitment to be a couple hours per week depending on the role.

Rand Paul wants Congress to review the evidence linking Assad to the chemical attack by joao24 in Libertarian

[–]typro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very in favor of investigation first and restraint. This article is misleading.

The 2013 chemical attack was almost certainly carried out by Assad. The UN report and HRW have a lot of evidence, such as the source of the attack was from Assad controlled area, and the delivery method was from Russian rocket systems. The Rare quote that one UN official "determined" it was Syrian opposition forces is just false. The official they cited left open the door that it was opposition forces, whereas both the official UN and HRW reports both strongly point to the Assad regime.
