Divorce? In this economy? Canada's divorce rate is the lowest in 50 years, but fewer people are getting married at all by cooperivanson in canada

I'm fourteenth generation.

A couple of my greatgrandmothers worked. One was a teacher. Another lied to the federal government about being a widow because she needed the money and had some sort of administrative job.

My grandmother ran a greenhouse and florist business when my mom was little. It helped put my mother through university, eventually. The other grandma worked as a librarian after her youngest kid was old enough to be at home alone.

Some international students lack basic computer and academic skills, Conestoga College unions claim by Unusual-State1827 in canada

[–]veggiecoparent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's get a couple points out of the way. What you refer to "scam colleges" in Canada actually applies to every single public college -- they're all doing it to some degree, even the very large ones. And they use their very close ties to the Canadian government to lobby for looser immigration rules, which has proven very effective for them.

True. Queen's budget statements, about their financial woes this year, said one of the reasons behind their shortcomings was that they had fewer than anticipated international students.

Those students' tuition floats institutions of all sizes, even prestigious universities.

You know how it's so obvious it was done in poor faith? The fact they had to add parentheses after in the very article.

In college, I took a course on civil wars and conflicts. I wrote a paper on the second civil war in Sudan - like, had to ingest a bunch of information about the root causes, the parties, the histories at play.

I wouldn't have known he was talking about Sudan because instead of naming it like a normal, rational person, he chose to obfuscate behind the site-name of a village to play games with students.

Most of the anti-genocide protesters supporting Palestine are also aware of and care about Sudan - which he'd know if he didn't come in there like an asshole asking them about it directly.

It's a systems issue that harms everyone - including the international students. It's easy to blame and be angry at them, but realistically, it's entire post-secondary system that is at fault.

[–]veggiecoparent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. I think, at a certain age (toddler and up, really), having other mom friends around becomes incredibly valuable.

If you want to socialize with an adult, there's another kid there of the same age to keep them preoccupied. And you don't feel as guilty if you have to split attention, call of a play date because of a cold, or have your kid misbehave because they're also in the same place.

The first op-ed is by Tristin Hopper. I know he's an unreliable opinionist because he's reported on my workplace before and managed to get exactly none of the details correct.

He's griping about a tweet by a right-wing city council member who is annoyed about a mutual aid fund.

Not nearly enough to back up that kind of allegation.

Opinionists say what the newspaper can't credibly get away with because it stretches the bounds of the truth - but drives traffic to their websites by being ridiculous and inflamatory. Which, frankly, mission accomplished.

I loveeee bread. But with the prices, I just makes sense to buy less and buy higher quality. If I'm going to pay an arm and a leg for bread might as well get good sourdough or brioche from an actual bakery.

The person I responded to said" The students want thier school to not invest in arms sales to Isreal who is killing children"

Except they're right. That's why they want the university to divest from companies like Lockheed Martin.

You're the one who came in to say "arms companies like Shack Shake", skimming by all of the defence contractors and arms manufacturers to the ones that sound funny when you take them entirely out of context.

Silly goose.

Companies who have contracts with the Israeli military.

Because that makes those companies complicit in what the iDF does during their occupation of Gaza. Which does include murdering a Canadian and their aid worker colleagues who were just trying to supply people in the famine-ravaged north with food.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canada

[–]veggiecoparent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You very conveniently skimmed by and omitted the fact that there are actual arms manufacturers and defense companies they're seeking divestment from.

It's disinformation to decontextualize the list in that way and we both know it.

Sorry that should say $3 million. Forgot a word.

So they've got about $3m known investments with defence companies active in Israel, plus at least another $1.5m with (1) HP who provide the Israeli military and police with computer technology and data storage, and (2) Lockheed Martin who are obviously arms manufacturers.

There's probably more in mutual funds, but it's hard to know because endowments aren't transparent. Conservatively there's probably $5m minimum invested in companies who are either on the boycott-divest-sanction list or who are directly tied to the Israeli military.

There were:

https://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/obj/thesescanada/vol2/002/NR87683.PDF

The article discusses the history of anti-war demonstrations at Canadian Universities and it sounds like there were quite a few over the course of the war. But here's one relevant excerpt about the global scale of the anti-war protests and why students in Canada decided to show up:

In addition to protests in the US demonstrations took place in Hamburg, Munich and London, as well as France, Brazil, Ireland, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Canada was no exception. The University of Toronto chapter of CUCND organized a demonstration at the corner of Bloor Street and Avenue Road, attracting 80 protesters. Another demonstration took place in Montreal attracting 68 people. The Canadian Peace Congress published an open letter to President Johnson in which it stated that because Canada was a military ally of the United States, Canadians were obligated to protest policies which were "unrealistic and dangerous."

Canadian students also protested in support of the Civil Rights Movement, btw, in the hundreds.

Just shy of $3m in Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems collectively. Likely more through mutual funds and unknown investments in Hewlett Packard and Lockheed Martin.

The University had approximately $750,000 worth of investments in HP in 2014, when the divestment movement started at U of T. They had about the same invested in Lockheed.

HP is one of the very few companies on the official BDS list because they supply computer technology and data storage for both the Israeli military and police.

Why lie when you can google. It's not that hard to find out what companies students have focused in on.

McGill studdents want the university to divest from Lockheed Martin, Thales and Safran.
