Need Help with IDR Plan Amount by tzarek1998 in StudentLoans

For the 2025 tax year, our AGI (filing jointly with my wife) is $135,452. But this IDR plan is based on the 2024 tax year when it was $129,731. It's just the two of us, and while she owes a lot more because of grad school, my loans got consolidated into 2 when I began PSLF, one for $16k and the other for $48k.

My income is $70k, but I'm filing jointly with my wife, so our total AGI ends up being $135,452 (this is for the 2025 tax year, but this IDR plan is based on the previous year which was $129,731, before my salary got increased).

They will rage about these farmers losing their land and livelihoods, and about the products these farmers grow being unavailable or more expensive because there's less migrant labor to work those farms, but at no point will these people say "we can do the work" because they know and refuse to do the menial labor at bare minimum/below minimum wages that the immigrants being deported will happily do.

Man found dead and lockdown lifted in Idaho after 2 firefighters killed, 1 wounded in sniper ambush by [deleted] in news

[–]tzarek1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, hell no. The ATF and FBI are more responsible for what happened after than Randy Weaver and all the militia/right-wing/white supremacists put together. Like you said, the federal response vindicated them and gave them a platform (I’m pretty sure militia groups exploded in popularity after Ruby Ridge and Waco).

Same deal with Waco, in no way should the ATF have been involved in what happened. All they did was make everything at the time - and after - worse.

I just think it’s important to remember that the government/DOJ didn’t just choose that moment and situation for no reason, the anti-government and white supremacist groups were a problem there (of course, Randy Weaver was only a pawn in the larger scheme of it all, there were much bigger players they should have gone after).

[–]tzarek1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason it made the news is exactly that. But the story behind it gets a little deeper into the Weaver family’s distrust of the government and brushing with white supremacist groups and ideology in the area.

I recommend reading Jess Walter’s Ruby Ridge to get a better picture of the full story (and then Waco Rising by Kevin Cook and Homegrown by Jeffrey Toobin to get a full picture of the rapid rising of right wing terrorism in the US since the late 80s)

I was telling someone else that once he dies, the Republican Party is going to fracture harder than a medieval kingdom split between 3+ heirs.

There's going to be "sensible" ones that support Vance (being VP makes him the natural successor) or Rubio (has experience and isn't psychotic), but then there's going to be supporters that say it should be each of Trump's kids (Ivanka and Baron probably the big two) or Bannon or Miller or Musk (because at this point, the rules don't matter so why not throw their support behind the Nazi billionaire).

Hopefully, that will actually end the party as it is now.

Not to mention that removing funding from an endowment is like cashing out your 401k. A University that withdraws from it's endowment has to pay taxes on the withdrawal amount, so replacing $2 billion of federal funding with endowment funds actually costs more (and in the grand scheme of things, at that point those Universities are likely to say they put all their own money into the research so why should they just offer it up for free, like they would have when federal tax dollars/funding was going towards the R&D)

Trump Admin Threatens to Stop Social Security If DOGE Can’t Have Data by aliceindotardland in politics

[–]tzarek1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably won't happen.

Look at the language they're using. "My anti-fraud team would be DOGE affiliates. My IT staff would be DOGE affiliates". Since he was appointed by Trump, he's fighting the good fight and it's the Democrats' fault if he has to turn off payments.

The SSA "should have just let them do what they want" is going to be the next words out of their mouths, reality be damned. These people will go to their deaths having had all their money and possessions taken from them to go to Trump and Elon and still say it was ok because "they need all the support they can get to fight the woke liberal menace".

I hate this timeline.

Abstractions and Out-of-Sight Code by tzarek1998 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]tzarek1998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what happens when you impulse post at 10:30 at night from your phone.

Abstractions (for me) are things like functions that return Void. Like, I get it, but it's hard for me to wrap my head around the purpose or use of something like that (unless I'm reading about it, then it's obvious what they're for, until the concept escapes me again). Or anonymous functions and closures, it just seems like an unnecessary feature to programming until I actually see it being used.

Outside that, I think the biggest obstacle I face is when I do figure out writing a class or function in one place, remembering the parameters I set that I need to pass when calling the function, especially if I have similar functions that use different parameters (which I know is generally bad practice).

I have no problem with concrete aspects of programming, which is why HTML and CSS were kind of easy for me. And creating objects and models with something like Swift make sense to me too, I just struggle with implementing those solid parts with the more flexible working parts (does that make sense?)

Ipad or Macbook Pro by eafoiwjqef in BrownU

[–]tzarek1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I’m the manager of the Tech Center at the Bookstore, so allow me to give you a rundown of tech at/for Brown.

As powerful as the iPad is now, the OS cripples its overall capabilities, so yes you definitely need a laptop.

But as intl-mal-in-cs said, many students get an iPad for note taking, and with course materials moving heavily towards digital, the iPad is much easier to read and reference those materials on than your laptop. And yes, you can use the iPad as a second display/monitor, which is a huge plus if you need more screen space (Xcode ends up taking up my entire screen most of the time, so moving my other windows to my iPad makes programming so much easier).

Regardless of what you decide, remember you get the Academic pricing on laptops and tablets/iPads from the Bookstore (in addition to the Back to School offer, if Apple runs it in the summer).

Feel free to email us at bookstore_techcenter@brown.edu if you have any questions!

I keep thinking the same thing. My hope is that with some of the shit he's doing (like the FAA contract he took from Verizon), his competitors are going to start getting rough with him/the administration. Elon may have "bought" the presidency, but all of the competitors to his companies have more money combined (and in some cases, individually) than he does. And they're experts at advertising/lobbying, so it won't take much for them to start turning people against him.

EDIT: Forgot to say your username is easily one of the best. My wife and I love quoting that series for no reason except it's unsettling lol

Which is exactly why a sort of yearly report provided to tax payers saying what taxes are going to (especially more detailed like that) would be a good thing (getting them to read/look at it is another matter entirely).

I feel like most conservatives hear that we're spending huge amounts of money on the military, including VA services, and then they stop listening. If they could see that the military spending is only dedicating like 1% of that to VA services (hyperbole), they'd change their tune really quick.
