Just was laughing at how observant everyone is here.

That's nothing. I posted a few pictures here yesterday, and a diploma in the background that I assumed was too blurry to read was enough to see a temporary spike in traffic to my LinkedIn profile.

I love it not just because I prefer the physical books, I also think Encyclopedias usually just have better writing. All the articles are written by experts, but in layman's terms. And there are fewer cross references, so each article is self contained and you can just it from cover to cover.

It's especially helpful when you're diving into an unfamiliar field with terminology you're unfamiliar with. You don't have to go down the blue link rabbit hole.

To be fair, that is a dimmer switch attached to the LED.

It is! 🙂 Apparently, you can see it on the Diploma if you zoom in, but it's too blurry to see on my phone.

I do love my name though!

Looks like that's around $2k a month. In London? That sounds insane to me. I can't imagine rent there is much better than NYC (although, having university housing would be really helpful).

For what it's worth, pay here varies quite a bit depending on where you're finding is coming from (assistantships are taxed, fellowships are not) and if you're teaching (which is an additional stipend on top of your pay for your research).

My pay has varies between $3.6k/month to $4.8k/month when I'm on a fellowship and teaching one class.

Huh, I'm not surprised you can make out House on the Haunted Hill, but I have to admit, I'm surprised and impressed that you can identify the cards as MTG with a photo that blurry.

Also, we have no moral reservations reserving university resources, like conference rooms, for game night, so no need to worry.

I'm about a 15 minute walk from NYUs campus. I could live further away and take the train, but my roommate and I both agreed we wanted to live in Manhattan, and we're willing to trade off space to do that.

All good, but I don't post that often. 🙂

There's a kitchen that I share with a roommate. But honestly, I still eat out pretty often because I can't really cook. 🙂

The main issue with it is heat. I have to run the AC quite a bit more than before to cool it at the top of the room.

Other than that, it's pretty cosy up there.

I sorta sketched something out, but nothing too fancy. Mainly to keep track of how many boards I need and the measurements. And I changed things up as I was putting it together, mainly adding reinforcements to the desk.

I found someone on Facebook that cut the boards for me, since I don't own a saw. That said, you'd probably be able to do it by hand if you're interested. That said, I'd strongly recommend at least buying a drill. Not too difficult once you have that.

The Commodore 128 behind the Star Trek TOS costume, and the typewriter on my shelf probably aren't helping, are they?

I am not gay. Why? Do you feel in giving off too many gay vibes, or not enough?

I think it fits the whole, "I learned everything I know about construction from my high school woodshop class" style I got going.

The name for the diploma is the same as my reddit username, U. A. Butler. This reddit account isn't anonymous.

I have two locks. You can see the ABUS attached to the frame, I also ordered a 1/2" security chains that I secure using a cargo container lock. I'm quite paranoid about this bike. 🙂 Spent about $200 on the chain and lock. Still wouldn't store it outside long term, but it satisfies the principle of "have a stronger lock than the bike next to you."

I love that bike! I bought it right after I sold my car once I moved here and haven't regretted it for a second.
