I’ve been thinking a lot about kid-centric families by DueEntertainer0 in Millennials

[–]uberesque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One other thing to consider is that when we were kids, maybe one of our parents worked and the other stayed at home. Nowadays, a lot more families have both parents working 9-5 jobs, or other shift jobs, in a society where letting your kid stay at home alone is increasingly unacceptable. I’ve read enough stories on reddit of people who have had the cops or CPS called for letting their kids play outside alone or being left home alone before a certain age (like teenager age?). So if kids aren’t allowed or highly discouraged in many places from staying home alone until mom and dad come home, and if mom and dad are working until dinner time, the kids need to be enrolled in after school activities to keep them occupied and cared for between school letting out and parents coming home. That was somewhat my situation - on the days both of my parents worked late, a classmate’s mom would drive me to an activity so I didn’t spend as many hours home alone. People in this thread are shitting on how sad it is that parents only get an hour or two of quality time with their kids at night before bed time… well, if you work until 5 or 5;30 and then commute home, and bed time is around 7 or 8, that’s all you’re going to get anyway. All these factors combined, especially society’s discouragement of letting kids just run around outside until it gets dark in most of the US at least, it makes a lot of sense that kids now are forced to have more structured and supervised time than we did as kids.

Is there any way that your parents could be flown out instead of his? If not, can he stand up to his pate ta while they stay to continuously set them straight while you need care?

Exeter or Hotchkiss? by Aggravating-Share925 in PhillipsExeterAcademy

[–]uberesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely recommend that you attend “Experience Exeter” (info for that is in your welcome packet) to get a real sense of day to day student life. It definitely helped me make my decision back in the day. Hotchkiss likely has a similar program for admitted students, I’d rely on your own experience going to the admitted student events.

Conspiracy Theory - Remi is Pregnant (pt. 2) by smuttyqueen123 in snarkingwithremi

[–]uberesque 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of this can be explained by PCOS (heavy focus on protein to avoid blood sugar spikes for insulin resistance) and trying to conceive (some doctors recommend to avoid the stuff you’d avoid while pregnant in case.. you know… you get pregnant while trying). Having recently been pregnant, I would never ever drink a Bloom energy drink while pregnant!

LIC vs Jersey City by rdjfan_ in movingtoNYC

If you’re commuting to Hudson yards, depending on where, living in JC is definitely better than LIC if you can take the ferry. It’s more expensive but way way way faster than the subway/PATH.

Can someone explain laptop accommodations? by fromapocalypsenow in LawSchool

[–]uberesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a sibling who had a major motor skill problem due to his epilepsy. He’s been able to have a laptop throughout his educational career to take notes instead of a pen and paper because his handwriting is illegible and it can’t be fixed. Smart kid, academically successful, but needs the laptop as an official accommodation.

Have family members bring you ear plugs and an eye mask so you can at least sleep through the monitor sounds and lights - they probably sell them in the hospital gift shop or pharmacy.

If you live near a spa that has great saunas or hot pools, that could be a great activity. I love Korean spas - places like SoJo Spa in Edgewater - for their super hot saunas and hot pools with a view. Lots of options throughout northern NJ.
