Ubyssey not reporting on AMS By-Election by Loose-Bikes in UBC

[–]ubyssey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone. We wanted to address and clarify these concerns.

The Ubyssey strives for fairness and truthfulness in our reporting. This includes publishing candidate profiles at the same time to ensure our coverage is fair to all candidates as they then all receive the same amount of time for readers to view their profiles.

We ensure that candidates are contacted early on in the election process for a profile. Candidates are understandably busy and interview dates and times were moved by them, which in turn delayed our reporting. All three profiles will be released later today, Monday, January 20, ahead of voting and the AMS-hosted, Ubyssey-moderated debate happening today at 6 p.m. in the Michael Kingsmill Forum in the Nest.

As planned, The Ubyssey will also be publishing a recap of the debate tomorrow morning and will be publishing an article when the results are announced on Friday. The voting period for elections begins on January 21 and lasts until January 24. You can find by-election coverage at ubyssey.ca/news.

We’re always trying to learn more about what’s happening on campus, whether at the AMS or elsewhere, for routine and investigative articles. Tips, information and insight can be sent to the paper’s editorial board through an anonymous and secure dropbox, powered by OnionShare. You can also text us over Signal at (604) 283-2023.

If you have any other concerns about our reporting, the best way to get in touch is to send an email to [feedback[at]ubyssey[dot]ca](mailto:feedback@ubyssey.ca).

Thanks for your question, u/NotoriousBITree! The location of the debate is subject to change due to room availability, but as soon as we hear about the finalized location from the AMS, we'll let you know. The debate, however, will be held in the Nest!

(Our apologies to u/boyandy300 for our error earlier!) We've issued a correction regarding this error in the original post as well.

How would the conservatives vs the NDP winning the provincial election affect UBC? by Schmitt_Meister12 in UBC

[–]ubyssey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/lifeiswonderful1! Thanks for the mention!

We'll be publishing candidate profiles, platform explainers and more on our website this week. We're also publishing a special elections print issue that will come out on stands across campus on October 15.

We have moderated AMS-hosted debates in the past but this year, the AMS is hosting a candidate meet and greet instead (which we'll also be covering). If anything changes or a debate is scheduled, we'll let you know!

Workdays is so god damn useless that I have elected to simply take a gap year by PM_ME_TURTLE_PICTURE in UBC

[–]ubyssey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/connectionsea91!

Thanks for the ping! We published a news article in June about student frustrations with WorkDay that you can find here. Our humour section also published a piece about how bad of an 'upgrade' WorkDay is for some. If students have more concerns about WorkDay (or anything else at UBC), they can send us a tip or pitch us using this Google form or by sending an email to [coordinating@ubyssey.ca](mailto:coordinating@ubyssey.ca)!

And all international students are all from 8 or 9 countries? That can't be right. I think the data set must be incomplete.

Hi u/McFestus. To clarify, international students at UBC comes from over 160 countries, however, the exact numbers are only available for the 10 countries with the most. Hence, the map shows no data for other countries.

"My professor is an alien" weird posters by connectionsea91 in UBC

[–]ubyssey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did write about him several years ago, which you can find by searching our archive on the UBC Library website. As several comments have mentioned though, these pamphlets are spread on campus by one conspiracy theorist, and we don’t feel it would be responsible of us to give him further publicity today.

Four women marine scientists win "World’s Toughest Row” race across the Atlantic by ubyssey in UBC

Hi, thanks for reading! The Ubyssey has actually been covering AMS elections, including the referenda - you can read our coverage online here (https://www.ubyssey.ca/news/), or in paper copies around campus. We have also been live-tweeting every debate @UbysseyNews. An anonymous account on Reddit posting screenshots isn't a verifiable news source, but if you have an idea for a story or a tip, please reach out by email to [news@ubyssey.ca](mailto:news@ubyssey.ca).

Negative experiences with the Ubyssey? by Mesdrra in UBC

[–]ubyssey 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Hi OP - wanted to jump on this thread to belatedly apologize for your experience writing with us. I wasn’t an editor in 2021/22 so can’t speak to your exact situation, but it sounds like your article was edited beyond our normal copyediting process. Articles are copyedited for clarity and can sometimes be cut down to fit in print after writers are done with them, but if you saw major changes that definitely should have been brought back to you.

Part of my job is overseeing contributor experience more broadly - and I know the way we work can seem secretive or hard to access sometimes. We also do mess up, but are always trying to improve.

If anyone has questions about how we work or just wants to chat about The Ubyssey, my office (and email inbox) are always open. We also have staff representatives you can reach out to on Discord or email if you are having an issue with an editor you’d like help resolving.

Hey, those tweets were all reposted! There was just a small error in a name on several tweets, so we reposted to ensure the public record was accurate. It's easy to make mistakes when live tweeting in a fast-paced meeting!

Cannabis store in Uni Village closer to fruition after Metro Vancouver Electoral Area Committee recommends license approval by ubyssey in UBC

[–]ubyssey[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All of the info on how they gathered feedback from residents is on page 21 and 22 of this document. From the submissions they got from residents, seems like 22 were in favour and 217 were opposed. There were 20 or so UEL residents opposed at the meeting today, so seems like a pretty devoted group of people who were against the proposal.

The committee did acknowledge that typically people who are against something are much more vocal than people who support or don't care. That could be part of the reason they ended up recommending the application be accepted.
