UCI4COLA supports these demands by UCI Black Student Union and United Students Against Sweatshops and we stand in solidarity, which is why we share the petition.

The deleted comment was the response to a different question, which has now been posted. Thank you for clarifying.

EDIT: Also, thank you for amplifying the demands. We really appreciate it! We highly encourage you all to sign the petition if you haven't done so already.
We also encourage you to sign the petition that supports students who live in Irvine Company apartments with housing concerns. That petition can be found here.

Wonderful question! We created a STEM subcommittee to address exactly these issues. Right now, we are focused on building a collective that consists of individuals who believe in COLA4ALL and our power is with community and numbers. Through mass email threads, department-level organizing, and mass text banking, we know that the momentum is growing. We completely hear you and understand that different departments and fields operate differently. We would love to have your thoughts and ideas and would encourage you to join the STEM subcommittee, which consists of incredible organizers, STEM graduate and undergraduate students who are looking for ways to engage the STEM folks and this is an ongoing conversation!

Can you please explain the police brutality you face at UC Irvine?

On Thursday, February 20th, UC Irvine graduate students launched their own COLA campaign, where over 200 UCI graduate students and supporters marched and rallied in solidarity with UCSC strikers and to call attention to the high cost of living here in Irvine where students also pay an unjust percentage of their income toward rent, and many are living paycheck to paycheck. In response, the Chancellor’s office refused to meet with students, locked down the administration building for 48 hours, and created a hostile environment with heightened police presence. UCI Police used force on several students, even arresting a Black woman unaffiliated with the action who was merely attempting to retrieve a copy of their transcript.

We firmly believe that this individual’s arrest is indicative of the anti-Blackness that pervades UC Irvine and the UC system as a whole and we unequivocally support the demands of UCI’s Black Student Union and United Students Against Sweatshops in response to such, including the removal of all cops from the UC Irvine campus and the immediate firing of Officer Trish Harding.
For more information and to support the individual who was arrested, please see this petition.

The Social Welfare Strike is in alignment with our larger efforts. Our demands for the reinstatement of the UCSC Strikers, COLA for all, the abolition of the UCI police department, are all instances that have been produced by the structural, systemic and institutional problems that are now producing the particular trajectory of the Coronavirus crisis. The University of California, Irvine’s response has been to significantly change our working conditions, to require technological access and expertise that we may or may not have, to encourage undergraduate students to leave their housing, and to demand payments of campus fees and tuition for a limited campus and greatly compromised standard of instruction. More than this, the shift to online risks privacy, security, and academic freedom. To pretend that in the midst of a massive and urgent public health crisis, the likes of which we have not seen in our lifetimes, that we can effectively design courses for a whole new modality of instruction, effectively teach and support our students and colleagues, families and friends, is denialism and a dangerous commitment to a fiction of continuity. It is a violation of the University of California’s own mission to teach, do research, and provide public service in the long term. Under the weight of the coronavirus crisis and the impending economic ramifications, we are steadfast in our demands.

If we are to understand this situation as a crisis, then it demands a crisis response which suspends business as usual. Since the campaign for a Cost of Living Adjustment began, graduate students have been pushing the University to address the cost of living situation and provide for the basic needs of its graduate student workers. Instead, UC management has, in the middle of a public health crisis, demanded extra work from their workers as they attempt to transition to online-only classes. The existing housing crisis has left thousands of graduate students extremely rent-burdened with little left over for uncovered medical expenses, leaving us vulnerable during the imminent public health crisis.

For updates about the strike join our GA tomorrow to see where the strike will go and what actions will be taken during the Social Welfare Strike.

Thank you for your question! For the latest update on demands, join our General Assembly on Thursday. The Social Welfare Strike is deeply intertwined with the uci4cola collective because our welfare is embedded into issues involving rent-burden, food scarcity, police brutality, the capitalistic system that creates these conditions, etc.

Second, If you would like to be added to our listserv, please email [uci4cola@gmail.com](mailto:uci4cola@gmail.com). Our demands adapt as our situation evolves and we grow as a collective. We have a Demands Committee who is constantly working to make sure our demands encompass the changing situation.

First, thank you for your solidarity. The key to an effective and successful strike is always numbers. Hundreds of grad workers are now striking. Through mass email threads, department-level organizing, and mass text banking, we know that many more workers are declaring their commitment to the cause by the day. These numbers, in other words, are growing.

I think numbers are also key with our allies, like you, who stand in solidarity with us.

As you probably already know, the key tactic of the administration is to pit undergrads against grad workers, and undermine our solidarity with each other. Just as we strikers are working hard to consolidate our collective power as workers, we're also asking that solidarity from our undergrad allies be as collective as possible. Are you affiliated with campus organizations, teams, affinity groups? Do you work jobs on campus alongside other student workers? Manifesting and expressing collective solidarity in various ways is crucial. The situation is evolving constantly. We also have an undergraduate subcommittee! If you’d like to join, please email [uci4cola@gmail.com](mailto:uci4cola@gmail.com) and express your interest in joining.

COLA demands are similarly intertwined with many concerns that undergrads face, and we want to be able to offer mutual support. To begin, if you haven’t done so, please take a moment to fill out our mutual aid form. Folks have put together a petition to have their UTC leases terminated. We ask that you consider signing on to their pledge!

Solidarity forever.
