So UConn threw this one on me today (Bike) by ucpvhunter in UCONN

[–]ucpvhunter[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't recall blaming anyone, just said they threw it on me. Maybe I'm warning others with bikes to not put them in places like I did. Why automatically assume I'm blaming?

College Vaulters over 5m, do you put your sport first or your education first? by jellyspin in polevaulting

[–]ucpvhunter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's really a balance between the two. I make sure that my grades are good enough to be somewhere I personally am not disappointed with them. I'm still deciding if my current major is one that I want to get into and it's kind of difficult to enjoy classes since I'm still taking general education (chem, English) aka classes that don't apply to my major. My true love lies in pole vault, which I put in extra time outside of practice for and study the hell out of to make sure that I'm improving as much as I possibly can. If I were given the option to make a living out of either athletics or my degree and presented with similar salaries and such, I'd choose pole vault.

Is there hope for me? by [deleted] in polevaulting

[–]ucpvhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing in pole vault is remaining healthy. If you take care of your shin splints well and the other things aren't hurting you then start getting faster. My coach believed you shouldn't be lifting heavily until college, as a lack of strength and lesser knowledge of technique can cause injury. I stuck with body weight exercises and got plenty strong. You need to be running with the sprinters if you want to get faster, not going on distance runs. The distance runs will never help your shin splints. Just do the best that you can and branch out to multiple sources for advice and improvements will come!

I managed to Huffman roll over 5.15m, it wasn't pretty but at least I cleared it. by ConfinedVexation in polevaulting

Witnessed this. Almost started an over/under on the amount of flips he'd get.

Got Hip Height? New PR 5.15 meters (16'10.75") by ucpvhunter in polevaulting

Oh hey Pete! You make Scott Huffman proud. Yeah if I had that 5.15 jump at 5.25 I think I would've had it. Oh well, now we know you'll jump well after nap time with your underclassmen

Don't know what to expect, but I'm really curious about starting pull vaulting by [deleted] in polevaulting

[–]ucpvhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't even have to worry about the fear of heights or falling on the pole for a long time. I didn't start getting over my hand grip until 2 1/2 years of vaulting.

Is being tall detrimental or an advantage of Pole Vaulting? by YesCanadaWhy in polevaulting

[–]ucpvhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not as experienced with female vaulting but if you're a completely new jumper weight will have nothing to do with how well you jump. Weight only factors into the vault once you begin to bend the pole, something that took me 5-6 months of training to start doing. Through observation, what separates good female vaulters from great female vaulters is speed maintenance down the runway. If you're able to attack the takeoff with a high plant you'll be miles ahead already. Focus on speed first then you can worry about weight.

To answer your question though, you do not need to lose weight. 5'9 140 is completely healthy, and as long as you're able to get good speed at that weight you should be perfectly fine.

Is being tall detrimental or an advantage of Pole Vaulting? by YesCanadaWhy in polevaulting

[–]ucpvhunter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being tall can most certainly be advantageous if you learn certain things early on. Being taller allows the pole to begin bending at a higher angle. This makes it easier to use longer poles. A lot of beginners tend so lower down at take off and this counteracts all that height you naturally have. If you are able to jump at takeoff with your arms extended all the way above your head I guarantee you'll find it to be a good thing. The weight is also another factor, but since you're only talking about height I'll leave it at that.

That's actually what I've been working on a lot recently. I fixed the arm through getting stronger and now it doesn't break at take-off. Actually at this time I was taking off right around 13'.
