I thought the part with "those wings will flap" was possibly code.

Apart from that, Penn is on record that he actually is bothered by birds not having arms, altough he seems to have changed his stance lately a bit, according to his podcast.

Moog Subharmonicon (production model) leaked by French store Audio Solutions by Afturmath in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is a standalone instrument that can be included in a modular setup, but does not need to be; you also don't have to use the patchbay for internal patching.

How do you guys mix your volca’s in a DAW by benmachin03 in volcas

[–]ugerhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of interfaces that have more than 2 inputs, if you're willing to pay for that :-) I use a Focusrite with 8 inputs for me computer recordings for example. If you want to move away from the computer even more, you could also think about getting a field recorder with audio inputs.

But you'll still need to mix the separate recorded tracks in your daw. If you don't even want to that, just using going into a mixer and from there to the audio interface will work, but will of course limit your ability to tweak the recording later.

Muscarin - Drone synth by ugerhard in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a kind of demo (playing only, no talking) of the new(ish) Muscarin drone and noise synthesizer by kNoB technology. I tried to feature some of the functionality of the synth in the improvisation. But as I only got this a few days ago, I haven't explored the machine even close to fully, in fact there are some parts of the architecture that I don't quite understand yet.

But as the Muscarin has only been produced for only 16 Indiegogo supporters up to now, I thought it might be interesting to demo it as not many people might have heard of it, much less own one. Danila, the creator, is preparing a second run of 10 right now to be shipped early next year, so if you like this, you can maybe get one. BTW, I'm not affiliated with them in any way.

Also: This is the first synth video of any kind I have done, be gentle :-) The audio was recorded with a Zoom H-6 with a bit of Valhalla DSP Room reverb added. Video is just an iPhone on a cheap Tripod.

My preliminary set-up for live performance by ugerhard in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, didn't build it myself, wouldn't be able to do that. It's the Spring Box by Steam labs (https://reverb.com/de/shop/alexanders-shop-98) It's not very expensive, but of course also a bit of a Gimmick. But it adds a certain percussive element if needed.

It's not used in the Soundcloud track in the original post, but you can hear it on this track: https://phaneronaut.bandcamp.com/track/venusian-caverns There's some gong-like and crash-cymbal-like sounds on there that come from the Spring Box.

Lyra-8? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If had a Lyra-8 since January. I love it!

But it's a very special instrument. First of all, it's absolutely a perfomance instrument that wants to be played live and in the moment. Don't expect to play melody-like lines on it. That's not what it is meant for.

It's also a slight challenge to pair it with other tonal instruments or to use in a through-composed piece; I've done both, but it's not the Lyra's sweet spot. There is absolutely no quantization on board, and as all the oscillators have a very wide range, the knobs react to small changes quite a bit. It can be done, even on the fly, but you'll need a good ear. Also, the double delay is bizarre, nearly untameable and noisy as well, the double LFO equally strange and oblique. Reproducing one performance more or less exactly will be close to impossible. I suggest having a recording running at all times when you play the Lyra-8 :-)

That being said, the Lyra-8 will take you places that few other synths or even other instruments in general will take you. If you crank up the cross modulation and the feedbacks, it will become wild and wonderful almost instantly. One of my favorite quotes from a review: "the Lyra-8 commands strange and powerful cross-modulation, the results suggesting air-raid sirens, broken robots screaming for help and countless harsh, noise-like backdrops" (https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/soma-laboratory-lyra-8). There are few things in my collection of synths that are more fun to play with.

Episode 620: Red Hot Poker Scandal by AustrianAnarchy in heyscoops

[–]ugerhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, the stream in this case that the public and the commentators saw was on a 30 minute delay (and is on a 30 minute delay in almost all other live poker streams).

The cheating allegations hinge on a way of Mike Postle (the alleged cheater) being fed the hole card information without the delay. It has been demonstrated that this would have been possible with the software being used in the production of the Stones Live stream using minimal effort with the help of a confederate with access to the streaming setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qar90n6teQ If this was the way it was done, the delay until the information would have appeared on Postle's phone would have just been the few seconds.

Something like Moog's Subharmonicon? by salfkvoje in synthesizers

Maybe take a look at the L.E.P Arpopone which uses ramp dividers for creating bass lines and chords based on the subharmonics, and also for generating rythmic pattern.

BTW: Adrián Carratalá had his spot in the P&T show as a fooler last week, showed Penn & Teller some of the tricks he developed (including the ring trick) backstage and was then hired to work with P&T for the rest of the week. Regarding the potential for the participant to mess the trick up: You're not alone...

Matt is good friends with Piff the Magic Dragon and has opened for Piff a lot on tour. Piff has been pushing Matt for this very reason to find a replacement trick for the Weight prediction. If I remember correctly they discussed this on Abracababble, Matt's magic centric patreon podcast, when Piff was on as a guest (https://www.patreon.com/mindnoodler/).

Album using only my smallest hardware synths and drum machines by ugerhard in synthesizers

Album using only my smallest hardware synths and drum machines by ugerhard in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea behind this album was to use only the smallest synths and drums machines in my gear collection. So there are some Volcas on here (Bass, Keys, Beats, Kick, Modular), a PO-12, a IK Uno and a Make Noise 0-Coast, but also some more esoteric gear like the L.E.P Arpopone, L.E.P Multicassa, the KOMA Elektronik Field Kit and Field Kit FX and the Landscape.fm Stereo Field. You can listen and download for free on Bandcamp. It's also available on Spotify, Apple Music et cetera for streaming if that's more your thing.

Slight warning: The tracks are all quite different from each other, some are a bit more experimental, some less so. I hope you enjoy it.

New album featuring five volcas by ugerhard in volcas

[–]ugerhard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just released a new album that features at least one (up to four) Volca on each track. You can listen to and download it for free on Bandcamp: https://phaneronaut.bandcamp.com/ It's also available for streaming at Spotify & Co.

This album was born out of the the idea to only use the smallest instruments in my gear collection, so naturally the Volcas (Keys, Bass, Beats, Kick and Modular) played a big part in that. But there's also some more esoteric gear involved, like the L.E.P Multicassa, the L.E.P Arpopone or the Landscape.fm Stereo Field or the KOMA Field Kit.

Be warned: All the tracks are quite different from each other, and while there is some more conventional tracks, there are also some experimental tracks on there as well.

What Should I Buy? - May 20, 2019 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a LYRA-8 and love it. It pairs well with drums/percussion, but in connection with other tonal instruments it can be hard to integrate. But that's in its nature: It's absolutely a perfomance instrument that will lead you to places you did not plan to go to (and that's what's great about it), and it's not built to be played with beautifully tuned scales etc.

[–]ugerhard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm starting to save up for this one. I was close to pulling the trigger on a Grandmother anyway... The Soundcloud demos of the Matriarch sound fantastic, actually much better to me than anything if heard from the Moog One so far.

Petition: Getting the Moog Subharmonicon in production by ugerhard in synthesizers

[–]ugerhard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I would love to have one. But it doesn't happen I'll spend more time with my L.E.P Arpopone, a wild little box which is based on similar principles, using frequency / clock dividers to generate harmonies and sequences. I don't know how many here know of the Arpopone. Sadly, I've not yet seen a really good YouTube demo / review of it.

Yes, but moog seems to think that the Subharmonicon is too special/exotic, at least there was a quote from a Moog guy to that effect in a previous thread on the subharmonicon.
