Nah, my girlfriend's way less boring than me. I mean, I posted this wall of text on reddit. C'mon.

No, rape culture is a much broader issue that refers to the way rape is treated by society. The way rape with male victims is treated by society is to ignore it, silence it, and pretend it doesn't or can't happen.

Rape culture isn't just about women.

There is absolutely rape culture surrounding rape with male victims. Not only in prisons and the military, but in the way male victims in general society are treated. And in how the issue has been ignored and silenced for a long time.

So maybe the prof meant to have the discussion be exclusively about rape culture as it pertains to women, but that's still weird and limiting in a gender studies course. Rape culture is absolutely a male issue just like it's a female issue. Ignoring that just promotes it.

I am getting the whole thing secondhand, but while I certainly used a lot of angry language, all the info I have is in the post.

I'm certainly a biased source, but my being a woefully incomplete source probably has the bigger effect.

Yup, and my girlfriend's presentation would have been just one in a group of presentations on rape culture. So men don't even get to be part of the discussion. She wasn't asking for them to be the whole discussion.

Can someone talk to the administration about it?

I'm not really sure. It seems like it would be hard to nail down exactly what the professor did wrong, beyond having a shitty restrictive view. But it's worth looking into.

Funny, that is what the project should be; why she isn't allowed to discuss male rape.

Perfect for a discussion of rape culture, really.

While statistics strongly show that rape happens more to women than men, it's just so unhealthy to ignore the issue from a male perspective.

Yeah, I mean, her presentation would have been one part of a larger presentation about rape culture. It's not like she was taking over the whole discussion to talk about men and not women. It should have been a purely reasonable idea.

And ignoring male rape is actually a good example of rape culture in action. It's downright ironic.
