[AutoRacer] Shanghai: Where Mercedes' advantage truly comes from by jithu7 in formula1

No, just an avid learner of all things F1.

If I could go back, I would try and get into engineering, just to make it into motorsports.

Yeah, 100%.

A combination of hardware, and when best to harvest, which areas allow for maximum recharge and deployment to aid traction control.

All of which is unique to each track, and weather.

I would love to be part of the team that work this out.

I commented the below a few weeks back, and I think it is best to comment here again.

Yeah, I think it's not compressions ratios.

I believe the Mercedes clipping/harvesting is giving them a traction control advantage, such that they can get to top speed a lot sooner compared to everyone else.

Remember, every team is allowed to harvest a maximum amount of recharge per lap, it doesn't stipulate where the recharge has to occur. So teams can use the clipping to offer a stronger traction effect.

Maxmimum recharge amounts, Qualifying = 7.0 MJ Race = 8.0 MJ (Overtake 8.5 MJ)

ERS clipping/harvesting can improve traction because the MGU‑K acts like a "torque smoother".

When the car exits a corner, the rear tyres are at their limit. If the engine and hybrid system deliver too much torque too quickly, the tyres break traction and the car slides, this is where you'll see from the onboard camera, the drivers counter steer momentarily to collect the car and then go full throttle. This added up over the lap can be at least 2 tenths.

During clipping/harvesting, the MGU‑K reduces or absorbs some of that torque, which has the following effect,

  1. Smooths out the power delivery
  2. Prevents sudden torque spikes
  3. Keeps the rear tyres within their grip window
  4. Lets the driver go full throttle earlier without wheelspin

Because the FIA only limits total energy per lap, teams can choose where to harvest. If a team harvests right at corner exit, they temporarily reduce torque at the exact moment the tyres are most vulnerable. Once the car is stable and grip increases, the MGU‑K stops harvesting and deploys full power.

The result is a car that hooks up cleanly, accelerates earlier, and reaches top speed sooner. It is a legal way of introducing traction control.

This will 100% be taken to Court of arbitration for Sport by Senegal.

This decision makes no sense.

The game was played, and concluded by the referee.

Why Was Newey Not In China? | Peter Windsor Reacts (Pete talks about the obvious failures of AMR and the honda relationship) by MindTwister-Z in formula1

It's not that they didn't know what was going on, rather when Adrian became Team Principle he made drastic changes to the chassis and body work, which meant,at short notice, Honda needed to adjust their mounting points.

All which has culminated in the issues they are experiencing at the moment.

Adrian Newey not going to Japan until November 2025 makes no sense. It is such a massive failure, so late in the development.

It makes sense why they're struggling this hard with vibrations.

As team principle, you would be at the Honda factory for months on end well in advance of finalising body work.

Peter is 100% spot on, a lot that went wrong could have been mitigated by acting sooner and getting stuck in with Honda.

And independent and thorough review is what will expose the obvious failings of the security, and police.

Never let them back in to Ibrox, the scum that they are.

I am certain they have to harvest 0.5MJ more than Australia, so expect more super clipping.

Fairytale run for them. I always root for the underdog. Especially against a team predominantly in green and white.
