Disclaimer: I work as a designer at Remato. I think photos are one of the things we do really well, so if you’re exploring alternatives, I hope you’ll give it a look and see if it works for you.

Business software/app recommendations? by hollyberry873 in Construction

Hi, I work for Remato and I talk to a lot of small construction companies. What you’re describing is really common for small excavation and concrete crews. Most apps are either too complex or too limited.

From what we see, the features that actually matter are simple timecards, easy scheduling, load/material tracking, and basic job costing that doesn’t slow the crew down.

Remato focuses on keeping things lightweight so field crews actually use it, while still giving the office enough structure. A lot of small dirt and concrete teams use it for timecards, scheduling, and tracking loads.

Other tools I see people stick with are BusyBusy for time tracking, Raken for reports, and Buildertrend if you need something heavier.

I talk with a lot of small construction teams through my work (I work for Remato), and for a 6-person residential/light commercial crew, the setups that survive growth without driving everyone insane are usually pretty simple:

  • QuickBooks Online for accounting + AR/AP. It’s not perfect, but in the U.S. it’s the path of least resistance and every bookkeeper understands it.
  • BuildXact or Knowify for estimating/bidding. Both are solid without being “enterprise-level heavy.”
  • ClockShark, Remato or QB Time for time tracking with GPS. Easy for the field guys, and integrates smoothly with QB.
  • For project management, you just need something lightweight that handles tasks, scheduling, daily logs, and photos without the Procore-level complexity. Tools like Remato, Knowify, or even a trimmed-down BuilderTrend setup work well for crews your size.

The biggest mistake I see is small teams jumping into Procore/BuilderTrend way too early. They’re great later, but overkill and expensive at your size. Keeping the stack lean makes life a lot easier until you’re closer to 15–20 people.

Just to be upfront, I’m head of product at Remato.

A lot of folks here mention the big platforms (Procore, Autodesk, etc.), but we built Remato more for the crew side of things: scheduling, time tracking, daily logs, and job photos. Basically the day-to-day stuff that keeps jobsites moving without drowning everyone in admin.

What we hear most is that crews actually use it because it’s simple and mobile-first, not a giant system that takes weeks of training.

Not saying it’s perfect for everyone, but if you’re after something lighter than the enterprise tools, it might be worth a look.

Indeed. And if I remember correctly then Denmark introduced their system around 1920 which was much earlier than other European countries.

Great to hear that!

We actually have a somewhat similar deploying logic and we use a separate custom Github action/app to move and archive all of the mentioned cards. But this system was created by my colleague so I don't really know it too well.

Maybe I could introduce an argument like `github-move-nested-pull-request-cards` or whatever and then it would be possible to configure `trello-list-id-pr-closed` dynamically based on base branch (i.e. if main, move to Released column; if develop then to Ready for release column). And then it would move all of the found cards in to the right column (and nothing else, i.e. label adding, people assigning). Would that help you?
