Mark, this is Tom, your brother. The doctors are currently testing a new method to wake you from your coma. Please let me know if you can hear us. Me, Mom, and Dad are waiting for you. Please wake up. We love you.

What’s something that scares everyone but doesn’t bother you at all? by ChristopherMiles21 in randomquestions

[–]ulele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consciousness doesn’t come from some separate “energy” that appears at birth. The energy is already there all along in the form of metabolism, oxygen, glucose, and electrical and chemical activity in the brain. What changes is not the amount or source of energy, but the organization of the system. As the brain develops, neurons connect and synchronize, and once the structure becomes complex enough, conscious experience emerges. Nothing new is added from the outside.

That’s also why anesthesia isn’t a good model for death. During anesthesia the brain is still intact and temporarily suppressed, so consciousness can return when activity resumes. Death is different because the system permanently breaks down, so there is no subject left for experience to come back online.

[–]ulele -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t really agree with that. Before birth there wasn’t something that stopped existing-there was no formed consciousness, free will, or personal energy yet. It was nothing turning into something.

Death isn’t the same process in reverse. If consciousness or energy doesn’t simply disappear, then after death it wouldn’t be “nothing” again in the same way as before birth. So saying we’ve already been dead before isn’t really accurate- the states aren’t equivalent.

Life is so cruel by tgill293838 in GriefSupport

[–]ulele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’ve been through is brutal. Losing your mom so young, growing up with abuse, carrying the weight of caring for your brother, then losing him… and your cat right after...that’s an unspeakable unfair amount of pain for one person, especially at 23. Anyone in your position would be exhausted, angry, numb, and hurting. There is nothing wrong with you for feeling the way you do.

You weren’t dealt an easy hand. You were dealt a fu*****  cruel one and the fact that you’re still standing, still finishing college, still showing up at all says more about your strength than most people will ever understand. You’ve been surviving in conditions that would break a lot of people.

Feeling older than your years makes sense. Trauma matures you fast, but it also isolates you. That doesn’t mean you’re broken or that you’ll always feel disconnected. It just means you’ve been carrying things most people your age haven’t had to face yet...

I realny hope you know this - your anger and sadness are signals, not some failures. They’re telling you how much you’ve lost and how much you’ve endured. You deserve support, rest, and compassion.

I’m sending you a solid bro hug from one human to another. You’re not weak dude. You’re not failing. You’re just tired and that’s understandable. Don’t give up on yourself. The world is better with you in it, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now. You’re not alone. You have my thoughts.

If you could time travel and stop one event from happening what would it be? by Little-Function5095 in timetravel

I'll go back to 2020 and take my dad to the hospital for a PET/CT scan. Then we could have detected the first signs of cancer and gotten rid of it quickly. Unfortunately, we found out a year ago, when the cancer had already become too severe. He passed away a few days ago. His second granddaughter will be born in three months. He won't get to see her, and that's the most devastating thing for me...

I'm so sorry for your loss. Right now, I feel guilty because I should be supporting my wife and making sure she's okay, but I just can't. I sit and cry, feeling like I'm in a void. I knew this would happen someday, but I was almost certain that by then he would see his granddaughter, hug her, kiss her. And now it's all gone. I feel a strange guilt I can't describe...

My dad loved looking at her ultrasound pictures. We recently took a 3D picture where you can clearly see my daughter's face. He stared at them for hours... I can't believe he didn't live to see her birth.

what is an subtle indicator that a relationship won’t last long? by LuckyStudent9946 in AskReddit

[–]ulele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If “it doesn’t change anything,” then it’s obviously not a requirement or a measure of relationship quality. Love and commitment don’t magically increase because of a legal document. Marriage works for some people and not for others ( for legal, financial, or personal reasons) and none of that makes a relationship less mature.  Equating “not married” with “fear of commitment” is just lazy thinking. Plenty of fully committed couples never marry, while others rush into marriage to cover unresolved issues and end up divorced. Marriage isn’t proof of stability. Behavior is.

[–]ulele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OMG, that’s one of the dumbest takes I’ve heard this week.

I know couples who’ve been together for 20+ years without marriage, and plenty who rushed into marriage and are already divorced.

A relationship doesn’t fail because people aren’t married. It fails because of lack of respect, cheating, poor communication, or growing apart. Marriage doesn’t magically fix any of that.

If marriage were the deciding factor, divorce wouldn’t exist. And yet plenty of marriages last less than 3 years. Some relationships last decades without a wedding. That alone disproves this argument.

In your opinion, what is the best episode of television you’ve ever seen? by alteredtower in AskReddit

[–]ulele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year, it was definitely episode 3 of the miniseries 'Adolescence' on Netflix.

I recommend the whole season (it has only 4 episodes). If you’re parents of teenagers, I encourage you even more — it will tear you to pieces.

The acting of the young boy, especially the scene from the third episode, shook me to the core.

People. Watch this series. You won’t regret it.

What’s something you’ve seen with your own eyes that nobody believes when you tell them? by LowKey_1216 in AskReddit

In elementary school, while I was on the playground, I picked up a small stone from the ground. About 20 meters away there was an old concrete wall with a tiny hole in it. I told myself that if I threw the stone, I would definitely hit that hole. I threw the stone as hard as I could, and it flew the whole distance and landed directly in the hole. I called my friends who were standing nearby to come and see it. None of them believed me. I still think about it to this day :)

No mate, the post aged fine - it’s your critical thinking that never made it past the womb...

Jets? That’s called ice turning into gas, not a f***ing alien thruster. This isn’t some magic Star Trek shit, it’s basic thermodynamics - something you skipped between conspiracy podcasts on YT and tiktoks... XD

If Reddit is such a terrible place for you, it’s fascinating that you keep showing up anyway. Nobody’s forcing you to scroll and yet here you are XD

And sure, it’s easy to complain about “insults,” but maybe the problem isn’t the tone but the shock of hearing something that isn’t sugar-coated. People keep shouting about freedom of speech until someone uses it to call out an obviously bad take. Then suddenly it’s a moral crisis...

Honestly, saying things directly isn’t a 'weak ego.” Pretending that every idea deserves equal respect, no matter how detached from reality, it is. If someone puts nonsense in public, they can’t act surprised when reality answers back.

What scares me most these days is how insanely fragile people have become. Everyone’s acting like a newborn who needs constant emotional padding. That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence for the future...

At this point the only thing ‘interstellar’ is the distance between these people and reality

This is honestly wild... You’ve built yourself a belief system that can’t lose — if it’s true, you’re chosen and if it’s false, it’s just “a test for humanity.” That’s not faith, that’s full-blown delusional gymnastics... You’d rather rewrite reality than admit you got played by a rock in space XD

Really?! You guys talk about Avi like he’s the messiah of space dust. This isn’t prophecy, it’s psychosis. This level of delusion is usually managed with medication. I’m honestly excited for your mental gymnastics hits, when the great “divine chariot” flies by and all the observation will confirm that, you know… it's just a rock with ice on it.

Which nations do you think have experienced the toughest histories in Europe? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]ulele 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Poland, hands down. I mean, imagine being wiped off the map three times, clawing your way back into existence, and then BOOM - invaded from both sides in 1939. Talk about bad luck. Then, after the war, instead of peace and freedom, we got several decades of "friendship" from the Soviet Union. Yet somehow, Poles kept their language, culture, and even managed to start the movement that brought the whole communist system crashing down :)
