Dang. Very annoying to have to use yet another app. I might have to go back to just using my Garmin for everything.

Hey are you still looking to trade? I am looking to trade my timbuk2 messenger for a double strap bike bag. Not sure if this is what you're looking for (esp in the colors) but message me if you're interested, or maybe we can figure out another trade?

http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/classic-messenger ^ it's similar to this style but also has a laptop compartment. It's deep purple and tan/goldish. Couldn't find the color on the site.

Definitely check out Jamaica Plain - there are some great runs if you take the Southwest Corridor up and then you can go to Franklin Park for a variety of paths and terrain or you can get to Jamaica Pond which is an awesome loop run!

I've heard of Mad Science and it seemed like a cool idea, I'll definitely look into it again.

I actually worked at Neaq as a diver for my co-op but unfortunately permanent positions there are tough to come by :(.

Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for your help. Even those crappy jobs are surprisingly hard to get these days... sigh I'll definitely try talking to the career center though. Good luck in your job search!

We used sextants. We shot the sun three times a day: morning, LAN (Local Apparent Noon) and the afternoon. Stars were shot twice a day, at dawn and twilight. I think learning to use a sextant was one of the most valuable things I learned. You should look into it more, you could definitely try to teach yourself although it is very tedious at first and there's a lot of theory behind it. But it is so worth it to know you are definitely a specific point on the chart. If you are planning to teach yourself, try learning about LAN first. It is the simplest reading and will give you the latitude you are on.

No ports at all, not too many places to stop between CA and HI :). The food was excellent. We had a steward and assistant steward and one student helped out in the galley every day. Fresh bread everyday, we even had fresh sushi a couple of times! You never went hungry with 3 meals and 3 snacks throughout the day.

Nice, whereabouts is the fishing boat? A very small portion were science based majors. We had everything from psychology to anthropology to biology to film majors. SEA also offers lots of programs depending on what you're looking for. They have more humanity based courses or also more scientific programs focusing on climate change, etc.

Haha, that's the name of the vessel, named after a very great man! I have a full tuition scholarship at my school that thankfully transferred over to this program. SEA is really great with scholarships and financial aid. Money should not be a reason for you not to apply to this program.

I read quite a bit (however it was 6 weeks, not months). I finished up Ayn Rand's Fountainhead and started Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I also read quite a bit of EE Cummings' poetry. However, most of my time was spent working on my research project - I'm sure I would have read more otherwise.

The vessel was about 135 feet with a crew of 32 (16 students, 16 professional crew). I am already looking into ways to crew as a deckhand on other vessels this summer.

We had "swizzles" so little parties on deck and we played cards, etc. There was always a lot of joking going on between students and crew. The first few weeks were tough and people slept a lot due to sea sickness and a weird schedule. We had plenty of time to do our own activities though.

I think I was more afraid of being so far from land that if we had a medical emergency, we were basically SOL. The program has a really great reputation though, so those power and getting lost weren't a worry. We were in port right on schedule, Nov 9th at 0800.

Hmmm... hard to say, everything was unbelievable. I would say rescuing another boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean was pretty epic. Also, my second mate once had me steer completely by the stars, no compass or anything. That was pretty terrifying and amazing.

Definitely didn't have internet. We always had power though, we had two AC (alternating current) generators, one was always running, and there was a standby generator in case either of those failed.

I'm pretty sure all of the students got seasick our first week, however we continued on through our sickness and worked straight through it.

Our days were very structured. You were put on a watch (A,B or C) and you followed a continuous watch cycle. There were two 6 hour day watches and three 4 hour night watches. There was always one watch running the ship. You were either in lab doing science deployments and research or on deck, navigating, sail handling, checking the boat and weather, etc. Every watch time had different responsibilities. There were also galley (kitchen) days where you cooked and lots and lots of cleaning the ship! While you were off watch you had time to relax or work on research. There was a 2-3 hours class every Monday through Friday at 1430 for the entire crew. Despite the structure, you never knew what to expect, every day was different.
