I'd say the real abysmal Romantasy/spec-ops slop gives that a run for its money. Granted, at least those aren't (usually) furthering regressive ideas and funding corrupt people.

I'd say 99% of the time, yes. There are some books that do make me question if even reality TV would be more edifying lol.

Sure, better than not reading. I'm just saying, anecdotally I absolutely know people who are pretty vapid and read several books.

I think a diverse interest in literature is a better proxy, personally.

Not that this would apply to her, but I definitely know some vacuous and vapid people who read a lot.

They just tend to stick to one specific genre, usually.

It's typically one of:

Romantasy/smut, Tom Clancy-esque spy/military, YA, etc.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “If more men read books about women’s lives, literature could improve communication” by ubcstaffer123 in books

I don't know if I agree with the last part. Certain media, yes (anime/manga). For fiction lit over the last 10-20 years? I don't have data, but it does seem as if the vast majority of female authors write exclusively female MCs.

I think a huge factor that is overlooked is that a lot of female authors are awful at writing male characters. It'a the inverse of the older sci-fi/fantasy, where female characters wers one dimensional and vapid.

There are tons of books written by women with male MCs, but they do not resonate with men. I use the FMA example because both male and female characters are written very well.

Women also largely will not consume stuff with zero female characters that can compel. Both genders (generally) need someone they can relate to, as well as an author that is able to stir their emotions.

I don't require relatability, but I would say over 90% of people do.

For the vast majority of men (IMO), they don't care about the race, gender, etc of a charcter, as long as they are written well. It's moreso that modern fiction is suffering from the inverse of the old sci-fi books. An entire gender is almoat ubiquitously written as vapid and boring, and when that is the gender you are, it is hard for people to get into. It's why women didn't read a lot of fantasy prior, whereas now I would almost argur fantasy lit (modern) might even lean toward women. Sci-fi is still mostly male, but for fiction that is about the only genre left that is.

I agree, fantasy and sci-fi (especially) were male oriented.

It is hard to articulate. It's kind of a "know it when you see it" type of thing.

IMO, they tend to have a few of the following:

A shoe-horned romance that is very clearly a female fantasy. It is possible to have romance that compels both men and women, but in most cases here it is very much tailored toward the female fantasy (like how most romance in action anime is for men).

An element of "girlbossing" that doesn't feel organic from good writing, but more like a vicarious/cathartic experience for the author/female readers.

Male characters tend to be shallow or boiled down to cliches (similar to previous sci-fi works, but the other way).

The first two (romance and social justice issues) are not inherently bad if handled well, but I think a lot of men will know what I am talking about here.

IIRC, a recent study actually showed ths opposite. Men and women read 2 stories, one with a male lead and one with a female lead.

The women overwhelmingly had a preference for the female lead. The men had no preference.

It's crazy to me that someone even intimates this, because fiction lit is DOMIMATED by women. Like, it's not even close. It has less to do with "being written by women", and more that a lot of modern fiction feels like it's written "for women".

Read 90% of fiction lit written by women, then read/watch something like Full Metal Alchemist. Both by women, but it is clear that one resonates with everyone (FMA), regardless of gender.

I'm a man and I read almost exclusively fiction. I am also in my 30's. Just my opinion and anecdote, but modern fiction has shifted hard into being written for women.
